Well, here’s my assessment. Clinton remains comfortably ahead of Sanders in pledged delegates stemming from primaries and caucuses, and she’s winning the popular vote as well. But Clinton’s early stockpile of superdelegate support helped bestow upon her an early air of inevitability, which in turn bolstered her general election electability acumen and contributed to the sense that her primary opponent was too marginal for prime time. This conveyed to Sanders supporters the clear sense that the system is rigged — which is fair because, as Debbie Wasserman-Schultz and the DNC remind us by their actions and words, it is.

“Unpledged delegates exist really to make sure that party leaders and elected officials don’t have to be in a position where they are running against grass-roots activists,” Wasserman Schultz aptly put it in February.

No one likes getting an unwelcome phone call during dinner. I get that. But superdelegates find themselves in the uncomfortable position of having the power to put their very heavy thumbs on the primary scale. Parties can, of course, make their own rules. But that doesn’t mean that party members can’t find such rules to be outrageous. After all, a lot of rules are: like in 2000, when Al Gore won the popular vote but “lost” the election. If superdelegates don’t want to be in this position again, they should embrace the just cause of their own abolition. It’s quite likely that Sanders will lose. But he will come to Philadelphia with a massive haul of delegates and tons of leverage to kick off the long process of transforming the party. In its Citizens United ruling, the court gutted campaign finance laws. It acknowledged that American politics faced the threat of gift­givers and donors trying to corrupt the system, but it held that campaign finance laws were the
wrong way to deal with that problem; bribery laws were the better path. Now, though, the court seems ready to gut bribery laws, saying that campaign finance laws provide a better approach. But if both campaign finance laws and bribery laws are now regarded as problematic, what’s left?

With the Supreme Court apparently imagining that there is some other, simple­ to­ enforce bribery law, we citizens are left empty­handed. This is the first case since Justice Antonin Scalia’s passing to directly address what corruption is; the issue is a critical test of the court.

At the Constitutional Convention in 1787, the framers devoted themselves to building a system that would be safe from moneyed influence. “If we do not provide against corruption,” argued the Virginia delegate George Mason, “our government will soon be at an end.”

Today, Virginia’s former governor proposes that there is a “fundamental constitutional right” to buy and sell access. If the court finds in his favor, it will have turned corruption from a wrong into a right.

...Baldassare made the claims during a 90-minute court hearing in which defense attorneys and prosecutors made their final arguments before U.S. District Judge Susan D. Wigenton who will decide whether to allow the case to proceed to trial.

In the hallway outside the courtroom, Baldassare said: "I want the Governor's phone and Regina Egea's phone, and [former Christie spokesman] Michael Drewniak's, and every other person whose phone the government said he gave to Gibson Dunn."

Wigenton gave Baldassare one week to file court papers laying out his new information and she gave prosecutors one week to file their response.

changes to election rules, including a voter identification provision,
that civil rights groups say unfairly targeted African­Americans and other
minorities. The ruling could have serious political repercussions in a state that
is closely contested in presidential elections.

The opinion, by Judge Thomas D. Schroeder of Federal District Court in
Winston­Salem, upheld the repeal of a provision that allowed people to
register and vote on the same day. It also upheld a seven­day reduction in the
early ­voting period; the end of preregistration, which allowed some people to
sign up before their 18th birthdays; and the repeal of a provision that allowed
for the counting of ballots cast outside voters’ home precinct.

...“North Carolina has provided legitimate state interests for its voter ID
requirement and electoral system,” Judge Schroeder said near the end of his
485­page opinion. The judge, an appointee of President George W. Bush,
found that North Carolina’s system was not beyond “the mainstream of other
states.”

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. is scheduled to review new rules on the amount of liquidity lenders are obliged to have on hand at a meeting Tuesday. The net stable funding ratio will require all banks to reduce their reliance on short-term funding that can be volatile, in favor of more stable long-term funding that is more expensive. The new rules are part of a broader effort to prevent a repeat of the 2008 crisis.

In a sign that it is serious about attracting depositors, Goldman is offering a 1.05% annual interest rate on deposits, which is far higher than rates currently available at other big U.S. banks.

One academic study found that tax dodging by major corporations costs
the U.S. Treasury up to $111 billion a year. By my math, less than one ­fifth of
that annually would be more than enough to pay the additional costs of fullday
prekindergarten for all 4­year­olds in America ($15 billion), prevent lead
poisoning in tens of thousands of children ($2 billion), provide books and
parent coaching for at ­risk kids across the country ($1 billion) and end family
homelessness ($2 billion).

view her hard­edged rhetoric about the world less as deeply felt core principle
than as calculated political maneuver. But Clinton’s foreign­policy instincts are
bred in the bone — grounded in cold realism about human nature and what
one aide calls “a textbook view of American exceptionalism.” It set her apart
from her rival­turned­boss, Barack Obama, who avoided military
entanglements and tried to reconcile Americans to a world in which the United
States was no longer the undisputed hegemon. And it will likely set her apart
