judge replaces presidential portrait with... an orange?

Still-life exhibit or political statement?

That’s a question on a lot of people’s minds about an orange Judge Elliot Daum is displaying on the wall of his Santa Rosa courtroom in the space once reserved for a photograph of the sitting U.S. president.

Justice David Souter On Civic Ignorance: 'That Is How Democracy Dies'

But the reason I said I think it is the most significant problem that we’ve got is that I think some of the aspects of current American government that people on both sides find frustrating are in part a function of the inability of people to understand how government can and should function.

It is a product of civic ignorance.

What I worry about is a remark that Benjamin Franklin made and Susan Leahy quoted Jefferson at the beginning about how “an ignorant people can never remain a free people."

Democracy cannot survive too much ignorance.

California Proposition 64 excise tax + sales tax + county tax

Proposition 64 passes, effective January 1, 2018, a 15 percent excise tax, based on the gross receipts from the retail sale, would be imposed upon retail purchasers of all marijuana and marijuana products, including medical marijuana. In addition, a tax on cultivators of marijuana would be imposed. Patients would not be excluded from these taxes.

The ID card program is voluntary in California; however patients with a doctor’s recommendation only will not qualify for the tax break should Prop. 64 pass.
