Bernie Sanders Blasts Clinton Record on Gay Rights, Keystone, Free Trade-ABCnews

-snip-
Senator Bernie Sanders delivered his sharpest criticism to date of Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton tonight at the Iowa Democratic Party’s historic Jefferson-Jackson dinner.

The Vermont senator and longest-serving independent member of Congress did not say the word "Clinton" once, but he implicitly drew contrast between his voting record and the political careers of both Hillary Clinton and her husband former President Bill Clinton. He focused in on gay rights, free trade, the Keystone pipeline and the Iraq War specifically.

"In 1996, I faced another fork in the road. A very, very difficult political situation. It was called the Defense of Marriage Act. DOMA," he said, referring to the law signed by President Clinton. "And let us all remember that gay and lesbian rights were not popular then, as they are today. It was a tough vote. ... That was not a politically easy vote.

"Now today, some are trying to rewrite history by saying that they voted for one anti-gay law to stop something worse," he said. "That is not the case. There was a small minority in the house opposed to discriminating against our gay brothers and sisters and I am proud that I was one of those members."

Bernie Sanders Points To Clinton's Shifts On Issues In Iowa Speech-Huffpost

-snip-
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Hillary Rodham Clinton and Bernie Sanders dueled for support among thousands of Iowa Democrats on Saturday, seeking an edge at a high-profile fundraising dinner that could set the tone for the leadoff presidential caucuses in February.

Sanders, the independent Vermont senator, used his speech to draw sharp contrasts with Clinton on a number of issues, implicitly criticizing her delayed opposition to the Trans-Pacific Partnership and Keystone XL pipeline as well as her vote in favor of the Iraq war.

Without naming Clinton, he pointedly criticized the passage of the Defense of Marriage Act during Bill Clinton's administration, saying, "some are trying to rewrite history by saying they voted for one anti-gay law to stop something worse. That's not the case." Hillary Clinton said in an interview with MSNBC on Friday that the law was signed as a "defensive action."

Bernie Sanders draws sharpest contrast with Clinton yet-MSNBC

-snip-
Without mentioning her by name, Sanders fired off a series of back-to-back jabs clearly aimed at the weakest parts of Clinton’s resume as he portrayed himself as the true progressive in the race who “will govern based on principle not poll numbers.”

On the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal, which Clinton recently opposed, Sanders said he was there first. “I did not support it yesterday. I do not support it today. And I will not support it tomorrow,” he said. “It is not now, nor has it ever been, the gold standard of trade agreements.”

Clinton once called the TPP the “gold standard” of trade deals as she helped negotiate it as President Obama’s secretary of state.

On the Keystone XL pipeline, which Clinton seemed to favor as secretary of state but recently opposed, Sanders said he was there first, too. “If you agree with me about the urgent need to address the issue of climate change, then you would know immediately what to do about the Keystone pipeline. Honestly, it wasn’t that complicated,” he said. “To me, that was a no-brainer and that is why I have opposed the Keystone Pipeline from the beginning.”

Without naming them, Bernie Sanders knocks Clintons on DOMA

-snip-
“In 1996, I faced another fork in the road — another very, very difficult political situation,” Sanders will say. “It was called the Defense of Marriage Act — DOMA — brought forth by a Republican-led Congress. And its purpose was clear: to discriminate against gays and lesbians into law. Let us remember, that support for gay and lesbian rights were not popular then as they are now.”

Calling the vote not “politically easy,” he went on to say that “today, some are trying to rewrite history by saying they voted for one anti-gay law to stop something worse.”

“That’s not the case,” Sanders said. “There was a small minority opposed to discriminating against our gay brothers and sisters, and I am proud that I was one of those members.”
