Bernie Sanders Returns to Iowa for Second Presidential Debate (and he's practicing!)

After marching in a Veterans Day parade Wednesday in Lebanon, N.H., Sanders holed up in Burlington Thursday to prepare for the debate, according to senior adviser Tad Devine. He reluctantly participated in debate rehearsals, Devine said, with chief of staff Michaeleen Crowell standing in for former secretary of state Hillary Clinton and consultant Mark Longabaugh playing former Maryland governor Martin O'Malley.

"You know Bernie. He's not a guy to sit around and want to sort of playact this thing," Devine said. "I think he'd be happier to go out and campaign, as opposed to this. But he also understands there's a lot of people watching this. It's a big moment in the campaign."

Indeed, the Saturday night debate at Drake University is Sanders’ last chance to engage Clinton directly before the holiday season begins and potential voters tune out. The Democratic candidates’ next encounter, in Manchester, N.H., is scheduled for six days before Christmas.

"The bravest moment" in the 2016 Campaign

Even candidates who believe in the separation of church and state don't believe in the separation of church and politics- except for one. Lawrence lets that candidate have the last word.

Sanders pushes hard for Latino support but faces tough climb against Clinton

Bottom part of article. Kind of tweaked me. But I guess it's good to know?
Read this article this morning.

On a recent afternoon, Natalie Montelongo, a Clinton campaign organizer who spent part of her childhood in Mexico, briskly walked through a residential neighborhood in east Las Vegas, clipboard in hand. She knocked on door after door, asking the mostly Latino residents whether they planned to vote for Clinton.
Never eligible to vote, young immigrant plays key role in Clinton campaign

Fermin Vera, 55, was on the fence.

“She doesn’t offer us anything different,” he complained in Spanish. And he didn’t like the fact that Clinton, while secretary of State, had conducted some official business using a private email account. He had heard of Sanders, but said he didn’t know much about him.

“I want you to think about something,” Montelongo said. “We’re the only campaign out here knocking on doors, taking the time to get to know you, to see what you think, to listen to what you need.”

She walked away smiling. After a 15-minute conversation, Vera had signed his name to a card pledging to vote for Clinton.

Bernie Sanders says Denmark is socialist. Forbes says it’s the most business-friendly country.

When Bernie Sanders said in his debate with Hillary Clinton that Denmark was a socialist country, which the United States ought to consider emulating, it created a big debate. Danish Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen weighed in, saying that his country had a market economy, not a planned economy.

Cathie Jo Martin and Kathleen Thelen are scholars of comparative political economy who have recently written books that talk about the Danish model. Martin is a professor of political science at Boston University; her book with Duane Swank, “The Political Construction of Business Interests,” asks why businesses in countries like Denmark are willing to work with social partners to shape active policies on labor. Thelen is the Ford professor of political science at MIT. Her book “Varieties of Liberalization and the New Politics of Social Solidarity” examines how Denmark has found a way to deal with global market pressures that eludes many other European countries. The interview has been lightly edited for style.

The “New Democrats” Confront a New Reality

Several recent news articles have suggested that, in the words of a Washington Post headline, “there’s … a big economic fight happening in the Democratic Party.”

It’s true. The corporate-friendly policies of the party’s more conservative wing have fared poorly, both as policy and as politics, and as a result the party has moved to the left. The insurgent candidacy of Bernie Sanders is the most conspicuous sign of this shift. It’s a major setback for the so-called “New Democrats” who have dominated the party since the election of Bill Clinton in 1992.

Nearly twenty-five years after they rose to power, the ideas of the “New Democrats” don’t seem so new. Hence, the phenomenon that the Huffington Post’s Sam Stein describes as “the panic of Democratic centrists.”

Now they’re fighting back. A Wall Street-funded Democratic think tank called Third Way has released a lengthy report which argues that an inequality-based, populist theme will doom Democrats. Its board member, former White House Chief of Staff (and JPMorgan Chase executive) Bill Daley, even insisted to HuffPo’s Stein that Sanders’ political positions are “a recipe for disaster.”
