Bernie’s Backers Prevail At Democratic State Convention

On Sunday, on the second and final day of the state party convention at the Sheraton Waikiki, party members elected a new chair, Tim Vandeveer, a grassroots activist best known for his activism in “keeping the country country” on Oahu’s North Shore.

Vandeveer is also an unrelenting supporter of Bernie Sanders for president, the independent senator from Vermont known for his views on socialism.

But it was clear from the strong support for Vandeveer in the Sheraton ballroom that a Bernie tide had swept him into office.

“When the people lead, our leaders will follow, and that absolutely applies to me,” said Vandeveer. “I am going to need your support to put this party back on track. No matter what side of the debate you are on, we must always engage in civil discourse and treat each other with aloha.”

538 Sacrifices Integrity to Go After Sanders on Independents

538: Bernie Sanders Could Win Iowa And New Hampshire. Then Lose Everywhere Else.
It’s fair to say 538 has been bearish on Bernie Sanders.

I used to be an admirer of Nate Silver and his empirical approach to covering elections. Not that the horserace ought to be the center of campaign journalism, but since media are going to focus on predicting who’s going to win, it seemed like Silver was approaching it as public opinion research rather than tea-leaf reading. When he left his perch at the New York Times to launch 538 as a freestanding enterprise, I wished him well in his pursuit of journalism that was based on testable information rather than on the opinions of powerful people.

My first hint that all was not right in Silverland was when he confidently declared, despite Donald Trump’s high poll ratings in 2015, that he would not be the Republican nominee (538, 8/11/15): “Our emphatic prediction is simply that Trump will not win the nomination.” Polling more than a year before the election famously doesn’t mean much, but this is a reason to not make predictions, not to predict that the opposite of the polls will happen. But not making predictions is hard to do if you’re in the prediction business, and so in the absence of useful data Silver and his crew substituted their own punditry–with embarrassing results.

Hawaii state Dems pass resolution for end of super delegates!

Breaking from the HI convention floor: Resolution PASSED urging HI super delegates to cast their ballots to reflect the vote of Hawaii's caucus voters (who voted for Bernie 68%), AND calling upon the DNC to discontinue the use of super delegates altogether starting with the 2020 national convention.

Sanders breathes life into a Florida professor’s unlikely bid to oust the DNC chair

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — Tim Canova was driving from a rally against money in politics to a protest against chemical giant Monsanto this month when his spokeswoman called to tell him that Sen. Bernie Sanders had just gone on CNN and endorsed his long-shot primary challenge against the chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee.

It was a rather big moment for a little-known law professor with a shaved head who, in another year, might not have created so much as a ripple for Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who is seeking her seventh House term and has won all her previous elections in landslides.

A few hours later, Sanders called Canova for the first time — and the next day signed a fundraising email for him. Over the next 48 hours, Canova brought in about $300,000.

Canova, 56, finds himself in the right place at the right time. Wasserman Schultz, 49, has become increasingly unpopular within the liberal base of the party — and among Sanders’s supporters in particular. Though she claims to be neutral in the presidential nominating contest, many Berniecrats believe that she has tipped the scales in Hillary Clinton’s favor. They see her, as they see Clinton, as beholden to wealthy donors and focused on winning elections at the expense of advancing progressive principles.

Sanders wraps up Kern County visit in Delano

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders wrapped up his time in Kern County with a trip to the 40 Acres in Delano on Sunday.

Sanders arrived to Bakersfield on Saturday, and drew in crowds of people for a rally at the Kern County Fairgrounds.

On Sunday, Sanders toured the historic 40 Acres, the first headquarters of the United Farm Workers Labor Union, along with the family of UFW leader Cesar Chavez.

"I'm honored to be here to learn about the plight of the farm workers and how we go forward," Sanders said.

Sanders said there is still a lot to be done to improve the lives of farm workers.

"When workers are paid horrendously low wages, and they are exposed to pesticides, or when water that comes out of their tap is undrinkable with different kinds of toxins...the people have to be held responsible," he said.

In San Francisco, Bernie Sanders’ message makes believers out of the skeptics

Bernie Sanders showed up at exactly 4:40 p.m. His appearance was between stops in San Jose in the morning and Vallejo in the evening. He made time for the hotel workers, and in one fell swoop proved he’s the candidate he claims to be: one for the proletariat, not the well-heeled minority.

But Sanders didn’t accomplish that just by showing up. He also knew where he was and who he was speaking to. He supported the workers’ quest, saying unions are important vehicles for dignified workplace treatment. He told the crowd he was shocked by the sight of so many people living on the streets of San Francisco. His wife, Jane, stood off stage, snapping pictures of her husband during his brief remarks before greeting the audience after the senator did the same.

It was as if they were just like the rest of us, because, well, they are.

It’s easy to write off Sanders and his continued candidacy as a waste of time. With Donald Trump being the presumptive Republican nominee, some argue Sanders is damaging the Democratic Party’s chances of retaining the White House. But that ignores the fact that the people who came to the union rally in The City — the legions of folks who’ve packed venues nationwide to see the man in person, the millions more who’ve donated their money and time to get him elected — are, for the most part, doing something they’ve never done before. And particularly here in California, many Sanders supporters are engaged in a primary process that has not been this important in their lifetimes. There’s life after Bernie, many say.
