Sanders’ Campaign Alleges Fraud in Puerto Rico Presidential Primary

SAN JUAN – With just hours before the start of the presidential primaries in Puerto Rico, members of Sen. Bernie Sanders’ team accused the leadership of the local Democratic Party of fraud, saying they have hindered the certification process of their voting center officials.

The Hispanic vote director for the campaign of the Vermont senator, Betsy Franceschini, denounced a series of irregularities that her work team faced Friday, while thousands of inmates in the island’s correctional facilities exercised their right to an early ballot.

“Our Bernie Sanders officials were never certified. We had 40 officials we submitted in time for the prisons. Not one of them was certified, while all of theirs [Hillary Clinton’s] went in. Attorney Manny Suárez had to go in order for us to be let in. This is a great fraud,” Franceschini said in a phone interview with Caribbean Business.

In an internal press release CB obtained Friday morning, a group of Sanders officials claimed that the president of the local Democratic Party, Roberto Prats, and its elections commissioner, Ramón López de Azúa, “are holding back the certifications of Bernie Sanders’ voting center officials.”

Bernie and Jane Sanders house: A guided tour

Days before the last major primaries of the 2016 campaign, Jane Sanders gave us a tour of her home in Burlington, Vt. A cream-clapboard Colonial with a red door on a quiet residential street, it is exactly the kind of house where you’d expect doting grandparents to live.

There are family photos on all the walls of the Sanders’ five children and seven grandchildren, a clutter of knickknacks on all the shelves, and piles of mail, magazines and the stuff of daily life everywhere else.

In the room adjacent to the kitchen, the floor is covered with grandchildren’s toys: drums, a keyboard — things that make noise that their parents prefer stay here rather than come home. In the dining room, Sanders moves a miniature Nativity scene out of view. “We’ve hardly been home since Christmas,” she says by way of explanation. Nearby is an antique sculpture of Don Quixote, which she asks that I not write about as a metaphor.

But it’s not the statue that cries out with symbolism. It’s the framed prints on the walls nearby — all scenes from the White House. They were commissioned and sent as Christmas cards every year of the Clinton presidency, and they bear the signatures of both Hillary and Bill Clinton. Which means Jane and Bernie Sanders sit in their dining room and gaze at greetings from the Clintons.

“I guess maybe we should do something else with those,” she says. Then she explains, proudly, that they were among the first things that her daughter, now a professional woodworker, custom-framed by hand, and you get the sense they aren’t going anywhere.

Silent protester at Trump rally + unknowingly was captured in a photo that sums up the 2016 election

Absolutely I'll share. As the title says, I went to a Trump rally in that shirt. I thought it would be funny and was kind of a form of protest. After all, I wasn't actively chanting or waving a banner or anything like that. I was booed immediately when I walked in, and after a cop approached me this guy came up to me and asked me to turn the shirt inside out. I thought it was an unreasonable request so I denied it, and then he said something to the effect of "if you try anything funny I'll kick your ass." Obviously a scare tactic, I wasn't worried at all about a grown man trying to beat up an 18 year old kid. There were many instances like this, but some supporters were kind and considerate.

Sanders to Clinton: Yes, Trump's Foreign Policy Ideas Are Scary. But So Are Yours

Bernie Sanders responded to Hillary Clinton's foreign policy speech on Thursday with a hit at her credentials, including her involvement in the Iraq War and so-called "regime change" in Libya.

"We need a foreign policy based on building coalitions and making certain that the brave American men and women in our military do not get bogged down in perpetual warfare in the Middle East," he said in a statement. "That's what I will fight for as president."

"I agree with Secretary Clinton that Donald Trump's foreign policy ideas are incredibly reckless and irresponsible," he said in his statement. "But when it comes to foreign policy, we cannot forget that Secretary Clinton voted for the war in Iraq, the worst foreign policy blunder in modern American history, and that she has been a proponent of regime change, as in Libya, without thinking through the consequences."

On Friday, the Sanders campaign tweeted out a new campaign video, featuring Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii), titled simply "Judgement." Gabbard, still on active duty for the U.S. Army and a veteran of the Iraq War, stresses in the ad that her support for Sanders stems from his proven reluctance to put lives at risk in overseas misadventures. "[Sanders] has foresight," she says, "when it comes to making these most critical decisions that affect us all about war or peace."

Nebraska superdelegate chooses Sanders

Maureen Monahan of Omaha, an uncommitted superdelegate to the Democratic national convention, announced Thursday she will support Bernie Sanders for her party's presidential nomination.

"I am encouraging all still unpledged superdelegates to support Senator Sanders as well," Monahan said in a written statement.

Sanders, the Vermont senator, won Nebraska's Democratic presidential caucus in March, defeating Hillary Clinton with 57 percent of the vote.
