Sanders makes 'last-minute' appearance at union rally with Warren

Warren confirmed her attendance well before the rally at Reagan National Airport, as she continues to vie for the progressive wing of the party. In press materials sent out Monday morning, she was the headliner and no other candidates were listed as attending.

“Bernie was very last-minute,” said Sara Nelson, the president of the Association of Flight Attendants, who had the crowd roaring in her own speech Tuesday night. “There was no plan for Bernie to be here. I can show you the lineup I had yesterday, and he wasn’t on it.”

The Sanders campaign has been roiled over the past week as internal union disputes with their own staffers over wages spilled into the open. The public sniping threatens Sanders’ labor-centric candidacy.

While the Sanders campaign and its workers announced a resolution earlier on Tuesday, the fallout clearly bothered the presidential aspirant. He told the Des Moines Register on Friday that going to the media “is really not what labor negotiations are about, and it’s improper.” Sanders did not mention the strife in his short speech on Tuesday evening, but some organizers suggested that his appearance was connected to the conflict and his not wanting to cede the stage to Warren.

Warren has a shadow. Sounds about right.

This has warmed me up even more to Biden. I hope people look at what he is outlining. It's major and can be done.

Morgan Stanley sees 'credible bear case' for a US recession

Morgan Stanley economists see a 20% chance of a recession in the year ahead, but that could move up quickly depending on circumstances.

Trade tensions that could lead to layoffs and a pullback from consumers are at the center of the recession case laid out by Ellen Zentner, Morgan Stanley’s chief U.S. economist.

A Fed rate cut may not be enough to stave off a slowdown that would start as a demand shock, according to the forecast.

Sanders cutting hours in an attempt to get to $15/hour.

@brianneDMR
Bernie Sanders says his campaign will limit the hours staffers work so they are paid the equivalent of $15 an hour. “I’m very proud to be the first presidential candidate to recognize a union and negotiate a union contract,” he told me.

Glad that they have the union to negotiate and fight for back pay.

UK tells Iran to release seized oil tanker and crew immediately

British prime minister chairs emergency meeting to decide on how to respond after Iran seized its oil tanker.

The United Kingdom has called on Iran to release a British-flagged tanker and its crew immediately, describing the seizure of the Stena Impero oil tanker by the Iranian forces as illegal.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commandos rappelled from helicopters and seized the tanker in the Strait of Hormuz on Friday in apparent retaliation for the British capture of an Iranian tanker two weeks earlier.

"The ship was seized under false and illegal pretences and the Iranians should release it and its crew immediately," British Prime Minister Theresa May's spokesman told reporters on Monday.

"We do not seek confrontation with Iran but it is unacceptable and highly escalatory to seize a ship going about legitimate business through internationally recognised shipping lanes."

Elizabeth Warren was asked how negotiations are going between her campaign and the union.

As Bernie Sanders grapples with his unionized workers, Elizabeth Warren says her union negotiations are 'going well'

"I think they're going well. And we'll land in place that's good for all of the workers," Warren told reporters Friday. "It's powerfully important."

She then pulls out the political "It speaks for itself" comment.

Warren declined to comment about the controversy surrounding U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders' campaign staff and their fight for a wage equal to $15 per hour — something he has campaigned on since Sanders ran for the 2016 Democratic nomination.

"I'm not here to knock another Democrat, all I can say is we're in the middle of our negotiations and I think they're going well," Warren said.

AP FACT CHECK: Savings from Sanders' Medicare plan dubious

Those features involve nitty gritty details about payment rates for hospitals and doctors, which are not fully spelled out by Sanders, as well as the estimated cost of generous benefits that include long-term care services and no copays and deductibles for comprehensive medical care.

Sanders’ figure of $5 trillion over 10 years in health cost savings comes from a study by the Political Economy Research Institute at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. The lead author has been a political supporter of Sanders’ and the study was unveiled at an event hosted by a think tank founded by the senator’s wife.

Sanders also cites a savings estimate of $2 trillion over 10 years taken from a study from the libertarian Mercatus Center at George Mason University in Virginia. But the author of that study now says that Medicare for All advocates are mischaracterizing his conclusions.

Associated Press

Dubious is a very kind word. Sanders is making public claims with respect to a plan that is not complete. It's understandable that the plan is not complete, legislation is not his thing.

I think there are two pretty big takeaways from the recent WP article about Sanders campaign.

One is that negotiations seem to be faltering to the point that they felt the need to publicly leak what was happening.

Details about the negotiations between Shakir and the union representing Sanders’s campaign workers have not been publicly reported until now. A review of emails, instant messages and other documents obtained by The Post show that the conflict dates back to at least May and remains unresolved. The documents were provided to The Post on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the private talks.

This was leaked to the WP and is in respect to a conflict that has been going on since the beginning. There have been negotiating issues since the beginning yet the WP states they are unaware if Sanders even knows about them.

It was unclear when or whether Sanders had been made aware of the situation.

Second, we do not know the scope of the negotiation break-down that has gone so far that after months it was decided it needed to be put in the public domain. The Union specifically mentions "working conditions" in their comment.

This is a new story that has been brought to our attention by a recent leak. Just the words used tell me the break-down is about a lot more than pay. This is going to turn into a big story in the coming weeks and pay will only be a part of it. Management seems to be putting up a fight.
