Poll: Trump, Clinton score historic unfavorable ratings

Source: CNN

By David Wright, CNN
Updated 7:40 AM ET, Tue March 22, 2016

Washington (CNN) — Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton register net negative ratings in double digits, indicating the front-runners for each party's presidential nominations are viewed negatively at historic levels, according to a new CBS/New York Times poll.

That makes Trump and Clinton viewed more unfavorably than any front-runner for either party since 1984, when CBS began polling voters on the question.

On the Republican side, Trump scores a net negative of -33, with a favorable rating of 24% compared to 57% of voters who view him unfavorably. On the Democratic side, Clinton fares only slightly better with a net negative of -21, registering a 31% favorable rating and a 52% unfavorable rating, according to the poll.

Both candidates' negatives far outweigh front-runners of the past. In 2012, President Barack Obama was viewed favorably and unfavorably by an equal share of voters, while Republican nominee Mitt Romney scored a net negative of -7. In 2008, both Obama and Sen. John McCain had net positive ratings of 16 and 7 points, respectively.

Is the Media Unfairly Dismissive of Bernie Sanders?
MARCH 21, 2016

To the Editor:

Re “A Bernie Blackout?,” by Charles M. Blow (nytimes.com, March 17):

Senator Bernie Sanders has done very well despite the “blackout.” The lack of coverage and the skepticism of the media have made it doubly difficult for him to introduce himself and his ideas to the general public. I have long said that the more people see Bernie, the more they like him, and the more they respect his main thesis.

He has done a great service this year, not only by making Hillary Clinton a better candidate, but also by focusing on the core American problem of wealth disparity/power inequality — something the other candidates rarely talk about.

I hope that Bernie has shown that many Democrats oppose Hillary Clinton’s desire to turn the Democrats into Republican-lite. The younger voters “get” Bernie. They are the future. So is getting more information via social media. Too bad traditional media closed its eyes to what is going on.

The party says 34,570 U.S. citizens living abroad in 38 countries cast votes by Internet, mail and in person from March 1-8. Sanders received 69 percent of the vote to earn nine of the 13 delegates at stake. Hillary Clinton won 31 percent, picking up four delegates.

(CNN) — Bernie Sanders has won the Democrats Abroad presidential primary, defeating former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton 69% to 31%, the organization announced Monday.

Sanders received 23,779 votes from American Democrats living in more than 170 countries. Clinton received 10,689 votes. He picked up an additional nine delegates, compared to four for Clinton.

The contest marks the Vermont senator's 10th win so far this campaign season and his first victory since winning the Michigan primary on March 8. Clinton, who swept the primaries in Florida, Illinois, Missouri, North Carolina, and Ohio last week, has won 19 contests overall.

The nearly 35,000 votes cast in the global primary exceeds the 23,000 votes cast in the 2008 primary, when Barack Obama defeated Clinton 66% to 33%.

Why is the top lobbyist for a huge union busting company hosting campaign fund raisers for Hillary?

Clinton Offshore Fundraising Effort Being Co-Hosted by Walmart Lobbyist
By Michael Arria / AlterNet
February 9, 2016

Hillary Clinton's campaign is holding fundraisers in Mexico this Wednesday, just one day after the New Hampshire primary. Clinton is not attending the events, and offshore fundraising efforts aren't rare for presidential candidates, but the players involved have direct connections to Walmart, where Clinton served as board member from 1986-1992.

The events are being hosted by Clinton campaign treasurer Jose Villarreal, who has maintained close connections to Walmart and the Walton family for years. As the Huffington Post's Samantha Lachman detailed in 2015, "Villarreal has spent decades on the boards of companies dominated by the Waltons, who remain a target of choice for the progressives whom Clinton's 2016 campaign is trying to win over. He was the lead director at Walmart; a board member at First Solar, an energy company where the Waltons are the largest investors; and a board member at Teach for America, the KIPP Foundation and Leadership for Educational Equality, to which the Waltons also have strong ties."

One of the listed co-hosts is Ivan Zapien, who has been a Walmart lobbyist since 2009. Zapien moved to Mexico with the company last year. Before leaving, Zapien wrote a letter to the staff, "In my new job, I will lead federal and state government relations, sustainability, communications and the Walmart foundation in Mexico."

Sanders points to polls showing him as a stronger candidate than Hillary against Trump

Bernie Sanders Forges Ahead With Jabs at Donald Trump
By ALAN RAPPEPORT and YAMICHE ALCINDOR
March 19, 2016

Undeterred by questions of delegate math or political momentum, Senator Bernie Sanders brushed off suggestions on Friday that his campaign had no way forward and forcefully made the case that he was the Democratic candidate better suited to defeat Donald J. Trump in a general election.

“Let me say a word to you about my good friend Donald Trump,” Mr. Sanders said at a rally before more than 3,000 people at a high school gym in Idaho Falls. “Just kidding, he’s not my good friend. In fact I never even went to one of his weddings.”

Despite the veiled jab at Mrs. Clinton, who did attend Mr. Trump’s third wedding, Mr. Sanders directed most of his fire at the leading Republican candidate. He said he was “making an exception” to his promise not to campaign negatively, saying it was a necessary evil because of the gravity of Mr. Trump’s rise.

“The truth is that Donald Trump is a pathological liar,” Mr. Sanders said, spending several minutes discussing Mr. Trump’s record of bending the truth. “People can disagree about ideas, but you cannot have a president who the American people cannot trust when he speaks.”

Mr. Sanders pointed to several polls that show him as the stronger candidate to take on Mr. Trump, ....

Bernie Sanders Delivers Passionate Speech on Native American Rights In Arizona

Bernie Sanders Delivers Passionate Speech on Native American Rights
By Alexandra Jacobo -
March 19, 2016

“We owe the Native American people so, so much.”

“They have shared their culture. They have shared their respect for the environment with us.”

“All too often, Native Americans have not been heard on issues that impact their communities. They have been told what to do. They have not been involved in the process.”

“Today in America, one in four Native Americans are living in poverty, and the high school graduation rate is 67 percent, the lowest of any racial demographic group. The second leading cause of death for Native Americans between 15 and 24 is suicide. And that speaks to incredible despair.

One in three Native American women will be raped in her lifetime. Most of the offenders are non-Native. Most of the programs dedicated to the tribal nations are underfunded. That has led to inadequate housing, inadequate health care, inadequate education, and insufficient law enforcement.

Today, Native Americans have a lower life expectancy and higher rates of uninsured than the population at large, and even those who have health coverage have difficulty accessing the healthcare that they need.”

You can watch the full speech above. Bernie’s discussion of Native American rights begins at 23:50.

10,000+ at Bernie rally only 500 at Trump rally in Salt Lake City!

Sanders delivers a string of progressive hits before a huge crowd in Utah (video)
Promise of change » Long lines to see the Vermont senator; campaign estimates 14,000.

By MATT CANHAM
March 18, 2016

A rock star of a presidential candidate, Bernie Sanders brought his show to Salt Lake City Friday afternoon and promised an encore on Monday for the hundreds of supporters who were turned away.

"It looks like I got some bad information; somebody told me Utah was a Republican state," said Sanders, the senator from Vermont, shortly after taking the stage set up in the parking lot inside This Is the Place Heritage Park. He spoke to a massive crowd that organizers estimated at 14,000 people.

"I gather that my good friend, Donald Trump, is here in Salt Lake City," Sanders said, "I'm kidding, he's not that good of a friend. Let me say this: Donald Trump would not be elected president."

He said the American public would reject the Republican front-runner for his comments about Mexicans, women and his efforts to discredit President Barack Obama through the "birther" movement. Noting that Obama's father came from Kenya and his from Poland, Sanders said no one had asked to see his birth certificate and suggested it was because he's white.

During a rambling speech, in which he often didn't finish one applause line before moving to another, Donald Trump on Friday vilified Ted Cruz, questioned Mitt Romney's Mormon faith and promised to visit Utah again soon.

Trump spent 45 minutes with a tightly packed, rowdy crowd of about 500 at the Infinity Event Center in downtown Salt Lake City. He said he saw a big protest on the streets as his car drove from the airport, calling some of them agitators. No protesters disrupted Trump's speech, but a group outside the building blocked attendees from leaving for 15 minutes.
