John Boehner's here to stay, for now, with nothing to lose
WASHINGTON (AP) Speaker John Boehner wants out. He really does.
But the Ohio House Republican is staying put, for now and that could improve the chances for a debt limit increase by early next month to avoid a market-shattering government default. His continued presence also might help lawmakers reach a bipartisan budget deal to head off a government shutdown in December.
The tea party forces that pushed Boehner to plan his exit after nearly five years in the top job now have less leverage against a man with nothing to lose. Conservative hard-liners have caused further chaos by blocking the ascension of Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif.
What are they going to do now, threaten to force a vote to immediately oust Boehner?
Nope.
"Sometimes the dog catches the car and doesn't know what to do," Rep. Steve Stivers, R-Ohio, a Boehner ally, said of the House Freedom Caucus and other hard-right lawmakers.

U.S. Navy to China: We’ll sail our ships near your man-made islands whenever we want
Source: Washington Post
By Dan Lamothe October 8 at 6:05 PM EDT
U.S. officials could soon send a Navy ship steaming by a chain of man-made islands that China has built in the South China Sea, Pentagon officials said, potentially exacerbating tensions in an area in which Beijing is expanding its presence.
China set up a territorial limit around the islands, effectively claiming international waters as their own. Washington does not recognize those claims, prompting the Navy to develop plans to send at least one ship within 12 nautical miles of the islands, a defense official said.
The Navy sending ships through the disputed areas would require approval from the White House, and underscore that the United States will not let China limit freedom of navigation at sea, the official added. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to do so.
Asked about the plan, a spokesman for the Navy, Cmdr. William Marks, said he could not discuss future operations. But he said that the Navy will continue to operate in international waters in the South China Sea in accordance with international rules of navigation and do so at a time of our choosing.

Jon Huntsman backhands Jason Chaffetz over speaker bid
From the Salt Lake Tribune:
So far the biggest criticism of Rep. Jason Chaffetz's campaign to become House speaker comes from the man who gave Chaffetz his start in politics Jon Huntsman.
Utah's former governor took to Twitter late Monday, weighing in on the leadership race between House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., and Huntsman's former chief of staff.
Here's what he wrote:
@GOPLeader McCarthy just got "Chaffetzed."Something I know a little something about. #selfpromoter #powerhungry
