Cenk Uygur, John Iadarola, and Maytha Alhassen, hosts of "The Young Turks," discuss a CNN poll conducted by research organization SSRS that showed Joe Biden with a resounding lead against Sen. Bernie Sanders in the Democratic presidential primary. However, it turns out that the poll had too few respondents in both the 18-34 and 35-49 age cohorts to be deemed statistically significant, and therefore polled mostly voters over 50.
Just days after announcing his candidacy, Joe Biden apparently got a big bump in the polls -- or did he? Because the headlines all seem pretty clear that he shot up, but when you look closer it's not as clear as the headlines make it seem.
On Tuesday there was a CNN poll showing Biden at 39, Sanders at 15, and Warren at 8. That is not only a big lead for Biden over Sanders, it is also a big jump for Biden, who had generally been in the high 20s, occasionally 30-31.
That's a big jump, but I want to show you the actual demographic breakdown in the poll. The text is very small and there's a lot of stuff there, but what you will notice immediately is there's a lot of N/As. And the N/As are in the category of people between the ages of 18-34 and 35-49. Now, a lot of people noticed that. That does not mean that they didn't have any respondents in those ages, they did. It just means that there weren't enough of them to consider it to be a representative sample for opinions held by those people, there just weren't enough of them. Overall it means that the results are going to be a good bit biased because what you are really polling is not people, it is the oldest age groups in America.

I had no idea this was true. Makes me want to take a closer look at all the polls.
How Sen. Cory Booker would curb gun violence
Sen. Cory Booker on Monday rolled out a sweeping gun-control agenda that includes requiring licenses for all gun owners, one of the most aggressive gun-related proposals from a 2020 Democrat.
The 14-part plan is part of what the New Jersey Democrat said was a “personal fight” to combat a gun violence "epidemic." It's sure to meet with fierce pushback from gun-rights groups like the National Rifle Association and faces an uncertain fate in Congress.
The core of the New Jersey senator’s proposal is a federal gun-licensing program that would require, among other things, a comprehensive FBI background check and proof of completion of a gun-safety course. After a license is approved, holders “could freely purchase and own firearms” for the five-year duration of their license, “with regular, automatic checks to flag non-compliance with license terms” and the possibility of renewal.
The plan would ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, as well as bump stocks, and it calls for instituting a universal background check system that would be enforced on sales at gun shows and in private and online sales. In addition, Booker has proposed requiring gun manufacturers to implement a technology for handguns known as microstamping, which he said would help police trace bullet shell casings to the guns that fired them.

"Joe Biden once called state-mandated school integration “the most racist concept you can come up with,” and Barack Obama “the first sort of mainstream African American who is articulate and bright and clean.” He was a staunch opponent of “forced busing” in the 1970s, and leading crusader for mass incarceration throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s. Uncle Joe has described African-American felons as “predators” too sociopathic to rehabilitate — and white supremacist senators as his friends.
And, as of this writing, a plurality of black Democrats want him to be their party’s 2020 nominee.
Whether Biden can retain that support, after voters learn more about his problematic past, could very well determine the outcome of the party’s primary race. To explore that question, let’s pick through the former vice-president’s hefty baggage on racial justice — and then, the case for thinking that Obama’s halo will prove to be brighter than the shadow of Biden’s record is dark.
Biden helped kill the most effective policy for improving black educational attainment that America has ever known.
Joe Biden was for desegregating America’s schools, until his constituents were against it. When the Delaware Democrat launched his first campaign for the Senate in 1972, the Supreme Court had just ruled that the Constitution required policymakers to pursue “the greatest possible degree of actual desegregation” — and that forcing white students to attend schools in black neighborhoods, and vice versa, was a legitimate means of doing so. Being an enlightened liberal, Biden began his candidacy as an advocate for such policies. He accused Republicans of demagoguing the busing issue, and appealing to white voters’ ugliest instincts.
But as his campaign progressed, and Biden discerned that the arc of history was bending toward white backlash, the young candidate bent with it. He became a caricature of a white northern liberal — arguing that forced busing was appropriate for the South (where segregation was the product of racist laws), but unnecessary for the North (where, Biden pretended, it merely reflected the preferences of the white and black communities).
Once in the Senate, Biden continued to triangulate, voting for most, though not all, f the anti-busing amendments that came before him. But for his overwhelmingly white constituents, nothing less than massive resistance to busing would suffice. The New Castle County Neighborhood Schools Association booed Biden off the stage at one event in 1974. One year later, the Delaware senator broke ranks with northern liberals— and joined his virulently racist North Carolina colleague Jesse Helms in voting to kneecap all federal efforts to integrate schools, anywhere in the country. Specifically, Biden voted to bar the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare from requiring schools to provide information on the racial makeup of their student bodies — thereby making it nigh-impossible for Uncle Sam to withhold federal funds from school districts that refused to integrate."

I think the single biggest favor anyone ever did for Biden was when President Obama selected him for VP.
It let Biden have 8 years of serving in the first African American presidential administration and THAT helped diminish a lot of Biden's problematic past positions on racial issues.
Well, on the upside, Trump won't use any of this material against Biden in the general election, his base might like the anti-busing stuff.
Senator Cory Booker will make Charlotte stop to talk gun laws
New Jersey Senator Cory Booker is coming to Charlotte and joining the discussion on gun laws.
Booker, who announced a run for president in 2020, will participate in a roundtable about current gun laws and the effects on communities across the country, according to his campaign team. The event will take place on May 10, at 11 a.m. at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church. It will be open to the public.
Booker will visit Charlotte at a time when the city is experiencing record homicide rates. During the first three months of 2019, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police investigated 33 homicides. There were 10 in the same period last year. As of Thursday, that number had risen to 48.

During Attorney General William Barr’s testimony regarding his handling of the Mueller report, Harris cemented her reputation — already established during the Kavanaugh hearings — as the Senate Democrats’ most acute questioner.
So much so that fellow senator and 2020 hopeful Cory Booker had to stifle his laughter as Harris asked the attorney general if the president or someone else in the White House “suggested that you open an investigation of anyone.” As Barr stumbled through his answer, Booker, in the background, had to collect himself. At least someone found some humor in Barr’s abandonment of his role in exchange for being President Trump’s fixer.

Harris and Booker are two of the sharpest minds in the Senate. I hope the upcoming debates make the candidates engage on the issues and not just give mini-stump speeches. If so, Harris and Booker should do a great job.

In the fight to legalize pot, enthusiasts have largely pointed to the unjust demonization of the drug itself. Weed is no more harmful than alcohol, the argument goes, so why not tax it and regulate it the same way? This is one reason I feel Bernie Sanders was right to say people in prison should be allowed to vote. Mass incarceration and over charging of minorities has been the leading de facto way to disenfranchise men of color in this country. As democrats we are all against voter suppression, so let's end what has been the largest tool to suppress minority voters for once and for all.
There are hundreds of thousands on minority prisoners that have been "convicted" of crimes white people just don't get charged with, at least not nearly at the same rate.
Let the handful of really bad apples, the bombers, the murderers vote, they are too few in number to matter compared to the tens and tens of thousands of people unfairly imprisoned.

Joe Biden holds a 30-point lead over Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) in the Democratic presidential field, according to a Harvard CAPS/Harris poll released exclusively to The Hill, further signaling that the former vice president is cementing his place as the primary contest’s frontrunner.
Forty-four percent of Democratic voters surveyed said they are most likely to vote for Biden in the 2020 Democratic primaries. Sanders comes in second place at 14 percent, while Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) places third with just 9 percent, the poll found.
