The time to have begun serious preparations in the US was two months ago

Trump crows about his decision to halt flights from China. What that did was buy time.

THAT PRECIOUS TIME WAS SQUANDERED!!

Priority #1 should have been streamlining the testing -- from production (and QC for cripes sake!) to distribution to implementation. Tens of thousands--at least--should have already been tested. At this point, testing should have been routinely integrated.

Priority #2 should have been supply stockpiling. The time for ramping up PPE production/distribution was in January. And by supplies, I also mean things like anticipating the shortfall in critical medications that rely on China's supply chain. Figuring out workarounds.

There are myriad of ways the Trump administration should have been using that time, but didn't. He is fully culpable for that failing, and I hope the public and the media don't give him a pass on this one.

Buying time is only good if you actually DO something critical with that time!

I could go on and on about what could and should have been done. Anybody paying even the least bit of attention KNEW this was extremely serious when China took the drastic measures they did. The hand-wringing about how "oh we didn't know how bad it may be" or "we didn't expect it to come here" or "but the research wasn't in yet" is all BULLSHIT. The minute you saw what was happening in China, you (and by you I mean our public health apparatus), that was the moment to begin serious preparation.

But, "oh no, the stock market..."

GRRRRRRRR!

South Korea says flight attendant infected with virus worked Los Angeles route

South Korea says flight attendant infected with virus worked Los Angeles route

https://mobile.reuters.com/article/amp/idUSKCN20L03R?

The flight attendant worked on Korean Air's flight KE017 from Seoul's Incheon airport to Los Angeles on Feb. 19, and on the return flight KE012 on Feb. 20, Yonhap news agency and other media reported. A South Korean official familiar with the case verified those flight details, adding that between flights the woman had stayed in Los Angeles overnight.

"She took a flight after showing symptoms, and we are investigating people who had contact with the employee on the flight," the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) said in a statement on Thursday.

The flight attendant, described as being in her 20s, later tested positive for the virus, and she is currently in hospital.

The crewmember had been on a Korean Air KE958 flight from Israel to Incheon on Feb. 15-16, the KCDC said. The passengers on that flight included a South Korean religious group that 31 coronavirus cases have been traced to.

What were the dates of evacuation flights? (to US)

The earlier ones were from Wuhan I believe, followed a couple weeks later by the cruise folks, right?

The very simple fact that asymptomatic people can shed coronavirus

That alone means that this thing is definitely going to continue spiraling out of control.

Just ponder that for a bit: someone who is actively infectious may have zero symptoms. No fever. No cough.

How the hell do you even begin to contain such a beast?

As for China, I do not believe their stats. And once they start reopening their shut down, as people return to work, as trains and stores and streets begin to refill, I predict China gets hit again, hard.

All China did was delay the spread to the world, so insofar that other countries used the time wisely to prepare, their actions were warranted.

How many other countries could even take anywhere near the draconian measures that China took? Build a huge hospital in a week? Please.

I don't think overreaction is even possible at this point.

Something fishy about Harirchi (Iran Dep Health Minister)

That widely-circulated video of the press conference where he keep wiping his brow seems strange. Almost as though he was trying to really emphasize or telegraph that he was ill. Strange behavior from a public health official at a public briefing, no?

So upon looking into it a bit, it seems that quite a few people think it's a hoax, designed to show how easily he recovers (time will tell, if he even had/has it and if he recovers). That is, that he was faking looking sick so he could then say he had coronavirus and then quickly recovers, stemming panic.

Just a very odd story, worth watching. There are several videos of him doing interviews where he displays obvious symptoms. And nobody around him is protected in any way. If this virus is as contagious as they say, all those people should be sick soon.

Will this pandemic finally cause the widespread acceptance of Medicare-for-all?

Who knows, this may become a grim silver-lining.

I think there's nothing like a massive public health event to convince folks of the wisdom of the "socialization" of certain aspects of a civilized society.

Maybe the taint comes off of the dreaded "S word"?

In what scenario does Covid-19 NOT break out in U.S.?

I simply cannot come up with any way this does not arrive here in force, sooner or later.

We are whistling past the graveyard by not preparing aggressively to mitigate the damage.

It could not occur under a *worse*, least-equipped administration than the current one.

Someone want to try to talk me down? Assure me that this won't be a massive public health shit-show?

The only real question is how soon it arrives.
