But he already has us scratching our heads, after posting this optical illusion-style photograph to Twitter.
At first glance, it appears Pence is simply enjoying a meal with his wife, Karen, and one of their daughters. In fact, he captioned the image as such.
“Busy weekend in NY!” he wrote. “Enjoying a quick dinner with the family at @Chilis. Looking forward to getting back to Indiana.”
But on closer inspection, it appears that his daughter doesn’t have a reflection in the mirror that the trio is sitting beside. Take a look for yourself. Pence’s reflection? Check. His wife’s? Check. But his daughter’s? Hmmm, nope.
It’s sparked debate on Twitter, with some people questioning whether it had been Photoshopped or was the result of a bizarre optical effect.

But it's unlikely that either would have been greeted with the kind of warmth that Pence's pick elicited from current members of Congress. House Speaker Paul Ryan, who has repeatedly questioned Trump's campaign, said he "can think of no better choice" than Pence. Florida's U.S. Senator Marco Rubio, who is skipping the Republican convention after losing 66 of the 67 counties to Trump in his home state's presidential primary, called Pence "rock solid" and a "great pick."
“It shows he’s trying to fix his Washington D.C. problem,” Steve Schmidt, who was a top strategist for 2008 nominee John McCain, said about Trump's choice. “From a media perspective, he's not as good of a communicator as Gingrich or Christie. But he's a 12-year member of Congress, and a member of Republican leadership."
The pick is also the most difficult one for Hillary Clinton's campaign. The presumptive Democratic nominee's staff would have relished the opportunity to highlight off-message outbursts from Gingrich and Trump on any given day. Instead, they're reduced to the more mundane tactic of using Pence's record to suggest Trump's ticket is too conservative for the moderate voters remaining to be persuaded.
"It's the right strategic pick," said Mike Feldman, a top adviser to Democratic nominee Al Gore in 2000. "Pence is safer and, more importantly, signals a more intentional approach to the campaign. And to my mind, Trump needs that if he wants to have a shot."
"He's a staunch conservative," New York Republican Party Chairman Ed Cox said about Pence. "Trump has said it's not the conservative party, it's the Republican Party. So to have Mike Pence, who is really trusted by conservatives, out there campaigning, that's a very normal kind of thing."

The man who killed more than 80 people with a truck in Nice has been locally identified. The driver of the lorry was 31-year-old Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, according to newspaper Nice-Matin which cited local sources, who is from Nice.
Police had previously said that they had formally identified the man, after finding ID papers and a phone in the truck he used to kill 84 people on Thursday night, during Nice's Bastille Day celebrations. He had been shot by police at the end of the attack.
The attack appears to have been premeditated, the local paper said, citing police sources. The man might have hired the truck on Wednesday in a town near Nice, it reported, and CCTV him picking up the vehicle in the hills outside the city.
Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel worked as a delivery driver, and though he was known to police because of petty crime, was not suspected to have been radicalised and did not have a file with the anti-terrorism police.

After breaking bones in both hands, she’d crossed anything like that job off of her list of potential employment options, but cooking for Josephine sounded like a way to pay her rent once the disability payments stopped—work she could do at home while she babysat her grandkids. She filled out the online interest form.
A few days later, two Josephine employees visited her apartment—part of a "four-plex" in the Loris Neighborhood of Berkeley, California—and she made them pulled pork sandwiches on ciabatta rolls. They inspected her kitchen using a checklist: Did she keep all food six inches above the ground? Was her refrigerator set at the correct temperature? Did she have a California Food Handler Card? Josephine, she learned, provided training, advertising, and insurance for up to $1 million in liability. Everything seemed too good to be true. "I said, let’s just cut to the chase," she remembers, "What is it going to cost me to be able to do this?" Josephine would take 10% of her sales, they said. McGhee couldn’t believe it: "I almost fell over. I was like, I’m in."
Every Thursday for the next nine months, she cooked lasagna, pulled pork, lemon chicken, and a variety of desserts for Josephine while she babysat her 7-year-old grandson. One 79-year-old customer walked from six blocks away to pick up her meals. Another woman drove from Emeryville, usually arriving 30 minutes before the serving window, at 4:45, so she could "beat the traffic." A friendly couple regularly showed up with a bottle of wine to share. "It was like family," McGhee says.
Josephine had signed up about 75 cooks in the San Francisco Bay Area and, like Renee, many of those cooks' customers had warm feelings toward the startup. "When I opened the door, it really did feel cozy, like I was entering into a warm home, full of laughter and good music," one user wrote on Yelp. The Atlantic called Josephine meals "utterly reliable generators of smiles and warm feelings" and Business Insider declared the company one of the "50 coolest new businesses in America."

Micah Xavier Johnson identified as Dallas police shooting suspect

A suspect involved in the Dallas police shooting has been named by US media sources as Micah Xavier Johnson.
Both the Los Angeles Times and CBS News are reporting Johnson, 25, is the shooter. He allegedly has no known criminal history or links to terror groups.
Five police officers were killed and seven injured after at least one sniper opened fire on police during a Black Lives Matter protest.

After the shootings in downtown Dallas, the gunman, identified as Micah Xavier Johnson, 25, holed himself up inside the El Centro College building in the downtown area of the city, Dallas Police Chief David Brown said at a press conference.
He told police he was “not affiliated with any groups,” and he said he “did this alone,” the chief said.
Sources told the Los Angeles Times that Johnson has no ties to terror groups and no known criminal history. He has lived in the Dallas area and has family members living in Mesquite, Texas, east of Dallas, the newspaper reports, citing federal law enforcement sources.
The suspect told police he was a U.S. Army Veteran, CBS News reports.
He told police negotiators the “end is coming” and said he wanted to “kill more” officers, according to Brown.
Police said after several hours of negotiating and shooting at the officers, the suspect was killed by a bomb-wielding robot.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz did not lose her job as head of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) because of this disastrous failure. Instead, as a member of the House, Wasserman Schultz voted weeks later with a lame-duck Congress for a bill that now jeopardizes the retirement savings of about 400,000 Americans workers, including thousands of Teamsters and other union members.
Under this new legal regime, the giant Central States Pension Fund (CSPF) applied last September to impose drastic benefit cuts on its 400,000 participants, claiming that the fund is projected to become insolvent in ten years. The Treasury Department rejected this plan and called for more reductions in benefits. Many of the CSPF recipients who rely on their pensions to pay mortgages and buy groceries, are now left hanging — unsure whether the fund will go under and perhaps bankrupt the Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation, the federal agency that insures workers’ pension plans.
Wasserman Schultz and her Republican colleagues who voted for the MPRA never asked the hard question of why these once-robust pension plans are now facing potential insolvency. Much of the distress in these funds can be traced back to the 2008 financial collapse. In addition to huge investment losses, many companies went bankrupt, thereby withdrawing from the multi-employer plans, and putting pressure on those remaining to fund existing obligations. Meanwhile, a sharp decline in U.S. jobs caused plans to suddenly have a dangerously high ratio of retirees to active workers.
