WTF? DJT OMG!

Big business CEOs bailing out on a Republican President who happens to be a Manhattan billionaire? What more is needed to wake America up to the reality that this guy is not qualified? What is wrong with our checks and balances? After all, we aren't talking about criminal conviction beyond a reasonable doubt or even civil conviction on the preponderance of the evidence, we are talking about our military Commander-in-Chief, the CEO of the executive branch and the Head of State who represents our country before the world. The standard for job performance as POTUS is higher than just "not guilty" or "not proven." The lives, the fortunes, and the sacred honor of over 300 million Americans are at grave risk with Trump as our head of state, head of our military, and administrative head of our government. What are the congressional politicians stalling about? They are playing cheap politics with the lives of all of us!

Sweden is not a friendly ally of Donald Trum

Sweden is a Trumpian dystopia, like Detroit or California. The right runs against, not for, certain social models. These have in common multi-culturalism, environment concerns, gender equality and strong safety nets. There can be nothing right with these places because, if there were, it would mean a flaw in Trump doctrine. Sweden is a liberal hell-hole. You want to see a model nation? Check out Putin's Russia. That's where they have it figured out correctly. Uh, yeah, right!

White House says Conway has been counseled after touting Ivanka Trumps products

Source: Washington Post

President Trump’s official counselor, Kellyanne Conway, was “counseled” after she told TV audiences to “go buy Ivanka’s stuff,” the White House said Thursday.

Legal experts said Conway had broken a key ethics law banning federal employees from using their public office to endorse products. White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Thursday that Conway “has been counseled,” but offered no other comment.

Let's have a conversation on race

We've had repeated calls for "a conversation on race" for the past eight years now. It hasn't happened, despite a couple of historically eloquent speeches on the topic by President Obama and it certainly isn't going to happen as long as Steve Bannon is calling the shots at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Race is the most important single element of America's history. It's horrors as part of a centuries-long international genocide of tens of millions of Africans and their descendants make race in America a subject which we can only tiptoe around.

The youth of the country is ready to discuss race much as they are ready to discuss gay issues. The arts, of which this film and TV show are part, may lead America to a place where conversation may some day be possible. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting if I were you though.

We've seen worse

The seal of the confessional has contained all sorts of admissions of murder, rape, child molestation etc. Laws requiring reporting of abuse have excepted doctors, lawyers and priests for secular, not theological reasons. Before removing those confidentiality classes, lawmakers should consider what will be lost and weigh it against putative gains. I don't think this is a good idea.

Endless

The conflict surrounding Israel may go on for two centuries. That's how long the last Crusader state lasted. No amount of tinkering or patching is going to resolve it. It is possible that the current Arab civil war will eventually produce some sort of United States of Arabia Caliphate with the economic and political power peacefully to absorb a semiautonomous Jewish state of Israel as one of its constituent members. Possible, but I don't expect to live to see it.

Meanwhile, the Likud extremist have managed to shoot their way into a box canyon where, surrounded and outnumbered sixty to one, they are dependent on constant and massive US military support for survival. The world has condemned Israel and the idea of a century of unilateral US support seems increasingly unlikely. Israel has no strategic value and no oil. It does have a wealthy American Jewish community, but even there patience is running thin and the price is climbing.

To many Americans the fall of the Jewish state seems impossible, but it has happened a couple of times before. 2070 will mark the two thousandth anniversary of the end of the last one. And then there is King Baldwin. Remember him? His Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem lasted almost as long as the United States has (so far).

Not the good old days

America is still waking up groggy from the golden days of 1945 when we had half the world's GDP and were idolized as the acme of democracy and freedom.

The oil shocks of the 1970s signalled that a new global economic era was fast approaching while the turbulence of the 1960s and the Vietnam disaster revealed deep flaws in our social structure and government system.

Alas, we failed to make a soft landing on the new world order and, instead of finishing the remodelling bgun with the New Deal, opted for a fuzzy set of beliefs called reaganomics and conservatism.

The result has been a drop in rank from unquestioned Number One to middle rank in those areas where we once led the world: medical outcomes, public education, environmental protection, upward mobility, and living standards generally. We are a huge but fractious country steadily bankrupting ourselves in useless military adventures. We are unable to feed all our children. Veterans are committing suicide hourly. Our murder and incarceration rates are the highest in the developed world.

There has been only one winner in this half-century of decline: the rich and super-rich. There is a lesson here.
