WaPo: This new study suggests Trump's racism might actually hurt him

One of the worst mental habits we see among pundits these days is to overexaggerate the role that Donald Trump’s harsh anti-immigration agenda played in his 2016 victory. This isn’t just about the past; it also confuses analysis of the present, leading pundits to baselessly presume in advance that President Trump’s immigration attacks will prove fearsomely potent in November’s midterms.

A new analysis by two political scientists offers important new data that sheds light on this debate. It suggests Trump’s immigration agenda might have been of negligible importance in his 2016 win, and that Hillary Clinton may have benefited more from the immigration debate than Trump did (that is, despite her electoral-college loss, it actually expanded her popular-vote total).

The new analysis by Howard Lavine and Wendy Rahn of the University of Minnesota looked at 2016 national polling data from the American National Election Studies. They broke down white Americans into three groups: 44 percent of whites are “anti-immigration” and want lower immigration levels; 40 percent of whites are immigration moderates who want to keep levels the same; and 16 percent of whites are “pro-immigration” and want immigration increased.

What in the name of all that is good and holy has happened to my country???

I was born in 1968; I turn 50 in December. That was a rough year for the Republic.

My earliest memories of political events were the Watergate hearing, which were omnipresent in my early years.

I grew up to be a history professor.

I get that political power in our country has always skewed toward the rich and powerful. But I never envisioned that fascism could actually infect our system.

Call me naive, but I thought at the end of the day, the opposition, despite being the opposition, nevertheless embraced the fundamental values of our system. Now it turns out that they would sell out our brilliant country to a foreign power simply for the chance to rule.

If sanity regains the day, history will lump these people with the worst figures of the past, as in Benedict Arnold and Joseph Mccarthy.

I'm just ranting because I can't believe we have come to this...

Iran's supreme leader reveals private letter Trump sent to Arab allies

Source: Washington Post

Iran's supreme leader revealed on Wednesday an unpublicized letter sent recently by President Trump to countries in the Middle East, raising questions about how Ayatollah Ali Khamenei came to know about private correspondence between the U.S. leader and his allies in the region.

The day after Trump announced his intention to withdraw from the 2015 nuclear accord with Iran, Khamenei sent a tweet that claimed Trump had written a letter to leaders of Persian Gulf Arab states “a few days ago” that demanded they do more in the region. “I spent $7 trillion and you must do something in return,” the Iranian leader claimed the letter stated. The comments appeared to be directed at Persian Gulf countries such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates — close allies of the Trump administration and, alongside Israel, the most vocal outside critics of the agreement that Iran reached with the United States and five other nations in 2015.

“A couple of days ago, Trump wrote a letter to the leaders of the Arab world. We have that letter,” the ayatollah said. “In the letter, he says I have spent $7 trillion on you, you have to do [what I say]. You spent this money to rule over Iraq and Syria. You couldn’t. To hell with it. He says you should do it and says Iran 'should' do it, too.”

The letter has not been publicly acknowledged by the White House, and a spokesman for the National Security Council said it could not comment on presidential correspondence. However, a senior administration official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he did not have permission to discuss the matter publicly, said the Trump administration sent a letter to Persian Gulf Arab allies about two weeks ago.

"I have spent $7 trillion on you" ...could he possibly be referring the money we have spent on our illegal war in Iraq, because if that's what he's referring to those leaders are going to be aghast and offended.

Steve Sisolak, Democrat for NV gov. is running this ad, and as a dad of daughters myself, I LOVE it.

I caught this today during Jeopardy. I'm feeling good about the blue wave here in the Silver State:

Any takes on how awesome this piece is?

Appreciation Thread: The Rule of Law

We are the original inventors of the modern democratic republic and I'm convince that we are going to prove to the world that when challenged, our 240-plus year old institutions can survive such an undemocratic attack and crisis.

We've done it before and we're doing it now and I remain hopeful that we will emerge from this current crisis stronger than ever before.

That is all. Please k/r to voice optimism that our institutions are strong enough to survive this serious crisis. For me, the alternative is untenable.

Just a simple Stormy Daniels (and lawyer Michael Avenatti) appreciation thread...

I really like Stormy's lawyer.

He was just on CNN w/ AC, and he comes across as somebody who is incredibly fluent in the law, and who relishes the opportunity he has to take down the bum-boil.

If I am this stressed out about a special election for a 9-month seat 2,000 miles away from me...

...I am going to be a wreck on Nov. 06. Just sayin'

And for those of you who are going to tell me that I should focus my angst productively, don't worry. I'm a volunteer on team Rosen here in NV. We get started on turning a red senate seat blue this Saturday

Proposed President Trump highway turns into a dead end as Utah Rep. Mike Noel drops bill

Source: Salt Lake Tribune

By Courtney Tanner

State Rep. Mike Noel has dropped his controversial proposal to name a southern Utah highway after President Donald Trump, insisting he had “enough votes to pass this bill” but was worn down by personal attacks.

“If you say nice things about the president, you are somehow a despicable person,” the Republican lawmaker said Wednesday less than a week after introducing the legislation.

Noel wanted to rename the existing Utah National Parks Highway to honor Trump for being “a supporter of public lands” and downsizing two national monuments at the request of the state’s Republican leaders. But his plan met swift backlash.

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert, for one, called it “a little premature.” Democratic Sen. Jim Dabakis vowed to mockingly amend HB481 to name the frontage road “Stormy Daniels rampway” in reference to the adult film star who allegedly had an affair with Trump. Navajo Nation leaders suggested it was “vengeful” and “hostile.”
