True Dough
True Dough's JournalHow many US states have you visited?
Any DUers who have been to all 50? And which is your favorite?
My wife and I have been to about two-thirds of the states. Missing quite a few in the south, Alaska and Hawaii, although we're hoping to tick the latter off the list someday.
Favorite state would be Cali. Advantage of being geographically large so there's a great deal of diversity in the landscape, including giant sequoias. Such a serene location (when there's no wildfires).
Daylight Saving Time RANT!!
Nope, this isn't about how I'd like to see DST come to an end (although I'd certainly be in favor).
This is about how the media always trots out alarmists stories over the need to protect your heart and health because you MIGHT lose up to 1 hour of sleep when you move your clocks ahead.
POPPYCOCK! I don't care if there's a study that shows a modest uptick in health incidents or vehicle accidents after DST kicks in. There are all kinds of studies skewed one way or another. Many studies are not worth the paper they're written on.
You can't tell me -- well, you can, but I won't believe you -- that parents who spend countless nights either sleepless or with very little shut-eye due to tending to infants (maybe two or three or four of them over a lifetime) are all of a sudden going to be in peril because DST may have cost them up to 1 hour of sleep.
Or how about travellers who regularly go from one time zone to the next. They should be in great jeopardy.
It's ridiculous!
Antonio Brown trade likely by Friday, according to NFL sources
So, if you were an NFL general manager, it's the old question of whether you want high-priced help from an aging (but not yet old) wide receiver who is still among the best in the league. If you take him, you also inherit someone who's shown he's not exactly committed to putting the team first.
If it costs you a first-rounder, do you shell out for Antonio Brown or not?
Any trade that is agreed upon can't be officially announced until next Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET, when the 2019 league year begins. It is likely Brown will want a restructured contract from any team that acquires him. Brown has three years remaining on his deal, with scheduled base salaries of $12.625 million in 2019, $11.3 million in 2020 and $12.5 million in 2021, but he has no guaranteed money remaining on the contract.
As of last Friday, the three teams that have shown the most interest in the wide receiver were the Oakland Raiders, Washington Redskins and Tennessee Titans. In addition, a couple more teams have jumped into the fray in the past 24 to 48 hours, sources said, putting the total number of teams to which the Steelers have spoken in the past few days at six or seven.
The Steelers' asking price started as a first-round pick and other compensation but has been reduced to a first-round pick, sources have told ESPN.

Canada's Treasury Board president resigns over Trudeau's handling of SNC-Lavalin affair
This is BAAAAD news for Trudeau. Jane Philpott is a highly-regarded and ethical minister, similar to Jody Wilson-Raybould. I really believe the time has come for Trudeau's resignation. The best thing he could do for the Liberal party is to step aside and allow someone else to lead as the October federal election approaches -- Jody Wilson-Raybould, perhaps.
On top of that, I'm seriously considering a screen name change here at the DU. True Dough is now tainted. I realize Gerald Butts, the prime minister's right-hand man, testifies on Wednesday and we don't know what he'll have to say, but the fact that Butts already resigned tells me a whole lot!
"I must abide by my core values, my ethical responsibilities and constitutional obligations," she said in a written statement.
"There can be a cost to acting on one's principles, but there is a bigger cost to abandoning them."
Philpott, the MP for Markham-Stouffville, said she has been considering the events that have shaken the federal government in recent weeks and, after "serious reflection," concluded she must quit.

Jacksonville Jaguars expected to sign QB Nick Foles next week
Teams are not allowed to talk deals with free agents until March 11, and no deals can be announced until the start of the new league year on March 13. The Jaguars are expected to release quarterback Blake Bortles and install Foles as their starter. Jacksonville will have to pay $6.5 million of Bortles' 2019 salary, which was fully guaranteed when he signed his current contract last year.
Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said Wednesday that the team would not place the franchise tag on Foles, leaving him a free agent.
"He deserves an opportunity to lead a team," Roseman said.
