Poll: Clinton opens big gap in battleground state of Virginia

Source: CBS News

The battleground state of Virginia looks a little less like a battleground today, as Hillary Clinton has opened up a lead there of 49 percent to 37 percent, echoing some of the movement seen in national polls this week.

Clinton has nearly-unanimous Democratic backing at the moment while Trump isn't doing as well with his fellow Republicans: she has 95 percent of the state's Democrats compared to 79 percent of GOP-ers for Trump. In today's highly partisan electorate, that amounts to a dramatic difference. There isn't a wholesale move of Republicans to Clinton - just 6 percent - but others have drifted into being unsure, or voting third-party, and in what may become a turnout factor down the road, Republicans report lower motivation to vote than before. (However, that also suggests there could be room for Trump to rebound, if some of his partisans return.)

Trump has an honesty problem

So far the media has written or talked about honesty problems in reference to Hillary Clinton only.
But if pundits are impartial , they should apply this narrative to Trump as well, as evidenced by a new poll result.

Two horrible "anecdote journalism" pieces were released yesterday

One is entitled "'The only other option': Bernie Sanders backers turn to Green party's Jill Stein", in which the author quoted three former Bernie Sanders supporters who say they will vote for Jill Stein.

That's right. The blanket "Bernie Sanders backers" statements refers to an unmentioned proportion of Bernie Sanders backers who plan to support Jill Stein. No polls are cited.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/aug/05/green-party-convention-jill-stein-bernie-or-bust-clinton

The other article is just as bad or worse, authored by one Marc Fisher of the Washington Post. It is entitled "In Trump, some Obama backers see a new champion of hope and change".

"https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/in-trump-some-obama-backers-see-a-new-champion-of-hope-and-change/2016/08/05/6ba433b8-5986-11e6-831d-0324760ca856_story.html

Of course, 2 and 1 million are both examples of "some", but the author does not tell us what "some" means.
Because if the author tells us how many "some" are, then he can't get away with writing this monstrosity.

I have seen not one "Trump's-millenial-problems" news piece

Pundits have agreed that the only time they will write or talk about millenials is in ways that promote an anticlinton narrative. I. E. Millenials don't like Hillary.

This despite the fact that she kicks Trump's ass among millenials in all polls.
When the Press adopts a narrative, it dies hard.

Boston Globe debunks Trump's claim he can't release tax returns due to audit

In an editorial today:

Trump’s claim that he can’t release his tax returns while he is being audited has no basis in fact. Nixon, the first president to make his tax returns public, was being audited when he did so. In any case, Trump’s tax returns through 2008 have all been cleared by the IRS, according to his lawyers, but he hasn’t agreed to release those either.

Clinton with 9 point lead over Trump post-conventions: NBC-WSJ poll

Source: CNBC

Hillary Clinton has emerged with a wide 9 percentage-point lead over Donald Trump after both parties' political conventions, the new NBC News-Wall Street Journal poll of the nation's registered voters shows.

Clinton draws 47 percent to 38 percent for Trump in the survey, conducted Sunday through Wednesday. That nearly doubles the 5 percentage-point lead (46 percent-41 percent) the former secretary of state held in July before either the Republican or Democratic convention.

Gaps in Melania Trump's immigration story raise questions

Source: Politico

Nude photographs published this week are raising fresh questions about the accuracy of a key aspect of Melania Trump’s biography: her immigration status when she first came to the United States to work as a model.

The racy photos of the would-be first lady, published in the New York Post on Sunday and Monday, inadvertently highlight inconsistencies in the various accounts she has provided over the years. And, immigration experts say, there’s even a slim chance that any years-old misrepresentations to immigration authorities could pose legal problems for her today.

While Trump and her husband, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, have said she came to the United States legally, her own statements suggest she first came to the country on a short-term visa that would not have authorized her to work as a model. Trump has also said she came to New York in 1996, but the nude photo shoot places her in the United States in 1995, as does a biography published in February by Slovenian journalists.

The inconsistencies come on top of reports by CBS News and GQ Magazine that Trump falsely claimed to have obtained a college degree in Slovenia but could be more politically damaging because her husband has made opposition to illegal immigration the foundation of his presidential run.

4 points against the new SurveyUSA poll in North Carolina, showing Trump ahead

1) SurveyUSA doesn't reach respondents by cell phone, thus potentially underestimating support for the most liberal candidate (in this case, Hillary).

2) SurveyUSA had Sanders losing California by 18%. At the end, he lost by only 7%, making SurveyUSA the most inaccurate pollster in California (again, no cell phones).

3) The new NC poll had been criticized by experts for undercounting African Americans.

"

SurveyUSA has done two polls of NC this year, and neither has been in the ballpark on the composition of the electorate"
https://twitter.com/Nate_Cohn/status/760924146717065216

...

That NC Civitas poll? Has Trump winning 32% of African American voters. Also, weirdly switched to using SurveyUSA. https://twitter.com/mattmfm/status/760922112639037440

4) The poll was commissioned by Civitas, a Republican organization.

The July-August 2016 Franklin & Marshall College Poll of Pennsylvania shows that
Hillary Clinton leads Donald Trump 49% to 38% among likely voters. The Democratic

benefitted Mr. Trump
