Gabe Sherman: the President could be removed from office by disloyal Cabinet members

The brilliant Gabriel Sherman of Vanity Fair...

One of Trump’s closest allies believes the president could be removed from office by disloyal Cabinet members—and he’s writing a book about it.

In the closing days of the Alabama Senate election, Steve Bannon told people that Donald Trump’s political survival depended on Trump supporting Roy Moore. Bannon’s argument, according to those who spoke with him, was that establishment Republicans and Democrats would use Moore’s defeat as a political weapon to force Trump to face the sexual harassment allegations that have dogged him since the 2016 election. Bannon called Alabama Trump’s “firebreak.”

Last night, the flames leapt into the West Wing. Moore’s dramatic loss to Democrat Doug Jones in a state Trump carried by 62 percent is sowing panic among some of Trump’s kitchen Cabinet. “This shows the public is taking the sexual harassment issue seriously. The president has a big problem,” a Republican close to the White House told me. Even before the election, Democrats renewed calls for Trump to resign for his alleged treatment of women. This week, three of Trump’s accusers launched a media tour to elevate the issue. Even a member of Trump’s administration weighed in. U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley said on Face the Nation that Trump’s accusers should be “heard” and “dealt with.”

One Trump ally is making plans to commercialize Trump’s downfall. Longtime Trump confidant Roger Stone told me he is working on a book titled The Unmaking of the President as part of a multi-book deal with Skyhorse Publishing. (Last fall, Skyhorse published Stone’s campaign account, The Making of the President 2016.) “I’ve been writing it as we go along,” he told me.

Stone said he got the idea to write a book chronicling Trump’s removal from office after watching how the White House responded to the Robert Mueller investigation. “It’s painfully obvious Mueller will bring charges,” Stone said. “The theory is Mueller will indict him on some process-related matter” such as obstruction of justice. “The only people who don’t seem to know it are Ty Cobb, [John] Dowd, and the president.”

Stone also believes Trump could be removed from office because he has surrounded himself with disloyal Cabinet members and other top officials. “Nikki Haley stuck a knife in his back,” Stone said, referring to her comments about Trump’s accusers. According to Stone’s back-of-the-napkin tally, only two Cabinet members would vote against invoking the 25th Amendment, the provision by which the president can be deemed unable to serve (Congress would have to vote by a two-thirds majority to remove him permanently).

Stone made it clear he’s not writing the book because he wants to, he’s just planning ahead. “I hope it’s a book I don’t have to publish,” he said, expressing dismay at Trump’s political prospects. “I just don’t think Trump is being told the truth about how bad things are.”

Russ Feingold "victory happened despite numerous barriers to participation in Tuesdays election"

Here in Wisconsin we know very well how the Rs lie cheat and steal....that is why our state is in the mess we are in....this is from our magnificent Russ Feingold. DEMS have to fix this stuff.

Everyone who did their part to help Doug Jones defeat Roy Moore should feel justifiably proud of what they helped achieve last night. It was an incredible victory.

But this victory happened despite numerous barriers to participation in Tuesday’s election:

Alabama recently passed one of the nation’s most restrictive voter ID laws -- and then closed DMVs in heavily African-American areas of the state. An estimated 118,000 voters lack ID they can use to vote, and black and Latino voters are twice as likely to lack an acceptable ID.
On election day, there were reports of Alabama police checking voters for outstanding warrants at polling places, which can intimidate citizens out of voting.
After Alabama lawmakers reinstated the ability of many former felons to vote this spring, the secretary of state refused to undertake normal public education to help newly eligible voters understand their rights.

This victory showed success is still possible in today’s America when enough people show up. But that might not be the case for much longer unless we lock in our rights. That’s why we need to keep building support for a 21st Century Voting Rights Act that can modernize standards for fair voting nationwide.

Thousands of Legit members have already added their names in support of the 21st Century Voting Rights Act. Add your name today.

A modern Voting Rights Act must include certain provisions, supplemented by state voting rights legislation if necessary, in order to truly restore legitimacy to our elections:

Establish an independent Office of Voting Rights, solely to review and approve any proposed changes to voting rights regulations in the country.
Establish a national standard for ID requirements that states cannot exceed.
Mandate same-day voter registration.
Mandate a minimum length of time for early voting.
Ban any change to voting laws within 90 days of an election.
Publicize any changes to voting regulations or procedures for a minimum length of time in multiple languages.
End felony disenfranchisement, which keeps one in 14 Black citizens nationwide from voting but only restrict one in 56 non-Black citizens.
End partisan gerrymandering so that the voters can choose their officials instead of officials choosing their voters.

Voting is the most important democratic right. Alabama showed last night that we can still make change when we organize and work together. But without securing our rights, how long will that hold true?

Help build momentum for this important new law. Join thousands of your fellow Legit members by signing the petition to support the 21st Century Voting Rights Act today.

This could be our generation’s civil rights moment, our 1965, and we must rise to meet it. We need a 21st Century Voting Rights Act. The onus is on us to demand one, and on Congress to pass it.

Thank you for standing up for democratic legitimacy today,

Russ Feingold

98 percent of black women and 93 percent of black men voted for Democratic Senator-elect Doug Jones

98 percent of black women and 93 percent of black men voted for Democratic Senator-elect Doug Jones yesterday in Alabama, a state where black people make up a quarter of the population. Black voters made up 28 percent of the electorate on Tuesday, a turnout that hasn’t been seen since President Obama’s 2008 and 2012 campaigns. Since those numbers started to trickle in late last night and early this morning, one thing became clear: black voters saved America from Roy Moore.
