State of the Recount: Michigan halted, hearing in PA, WI 70% complete

In Michigan a ruling from a federal judge has ended any real hope of a complete recount.

A recount that started Monday ended Wednesday night. U.S. District Judge Mark Goldsmith set aside his earlier order that got the recount moving, acting after the state appeals court said Stein doesn’t qualify as an “aggrieved” candidate under Michigan law.
The initial order from Judge Goldsmith promised he would review his decision if there was a ruling from the state court. There was. He did. It’s over.

A federal judge’s ruling that effectively halted Michigan’s presidential recount after three days assures Republican Donald Trump’s narrow victory in the state.
Considering Michigan’s ruling that districts with even one ballot difference between paper ballots and reported totals couldn’t be counted knocked out over 370 districts in the Detroit area alone, it’s not clear that a recount would have actually addressed any genuine issues.

In Wisconsin the count is 70 percent complete, but it hasn’t produced much difference in the outcome.

Is there more to the story in Michigan, or is this accurate? What about in WI and PA? Anyone have other information to share on the recount effort?

Wisconsin recount: officials admit to double counted votes, wrong color pens, other absurdities

Now that the statewide recount in Wisconsin is underway, it’s still difficult to predict whether the final vote totals will significantly shift to the point of taking the state away from Donald Trump and awarding it to Hillary Clinton. The bulk of the suspicion of cheating is now focused on Waukesha County, which is thus far refusing to do a hand recount. But even so, Wisconsin’s official website is now admitting to a number of initial errors in various other counties – some of them reading like a bad sitcom.

The official Wisconsin election website has posted its latest recount updates as of December 7th. The list, which you can visit by clicking the above blue link, includes some rather stunning admissions. For instance Racine County is admitting that its vote totals have shifted in various precincts during the course of the recount because “Votes were not counted on Election Night due to non-standard pens used to mark ballots.” What does this mean? Did poll workers give voters red pens, or magic markers? But it gets stranger.

FYI - This FB message from Jill Stein just came in regarding Michigan.

Yesterday, the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed a federal District Judge's order and made clear that the presidential recount in Michigan should continue as planned. The ruling dealt a blow to Trump and Republicans in Michigan, who appealed to the court to try to stop Michigan's historic recount.
Matthew Brinckerhoff, a lawyer for the Stein campaign, said the following in response to the ruling:
"Today, Trump and his GOP allies in Michigan tried everything in the book to stop the recount, and they failed. This recount is continuing in spite of their efforts to suppress the vote.

"We applaud this decision by the Sixth Circuit, and look forward to continuing to fight for the rights of Michiganders to ensure their votes are recounted in a timely and thorough manner."

While the Michigan Court of Appeals also ruled this afternoon and directed the Board of State Canvassers to reject Dr. Stein's recount petition, they did not order the recount to be stopped because, as numerous experts have pointed out, their hands are tied by a U.S. District Court ruling ordering it to commence. Instead, the issue of the recount's constitutionality will likely return to Judge Goldsmith tomorrow, as the statewide recount in Michigan proceeds as planned.

Michigan officials admit majority of Detroit vote counting machines broke on Election Day

Was it merely old equipment which incompetent officials had failed to bother getting serviced, or was there something intentionally sinister going on? That’s the question now coming out of Michigan, where just as the statewide recount is getting underway, officials are finally admitting that the majority of vote counting machines in Detroit broke on election day. The stunning admission, which is getting virtually no national news coverage despite appearing in a major Detroit newspaper, casts doubt on the legitimacy of Donald Trump’s supposed narrow win in the state.

Even now, elections director Daniel Baxter appears to only be making the admission as part of a convoluted argument for why the ballots in those Detroit precincts can’t be recounted. He’s acknowledging that eighty-seven optical scanners in Detroit simply “broke” on the same day. But he and other Michigan officials are now making the argument that, because the broken machines resulted in different vote totals on the machines than on the precinct log books, state law means those ballots can’t be recounted.

Palmer Update PA: Before recount, Hillary Clinton has already caught up by 26,317 votes in PA

Before recount, Hillary Clinton has already caught up by 26,317 votes in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania hasn’t even done a statewide recount yet, and its vote totals are already shifting heavily in Hillary Clinton’s favor. Last week we reported that based on the revised numbers coming in from various Pennsylvania precincts, Donald Trump’s lead in the state had dropped from its original day-after-election total of 70,638 votes down to just 46,938 votes. And now it’s dropped even further.

As we’ve been documenting all along, it’s easy to follow to shift in numbers here. USA Today reported the original number last month, and the respected Decision Desk HQ subsequently reported the revised number on December 1st. And now that number has shifted again.

Chaos: Michigan court rules recount must end, as Federal court rules it must continue

So now what? On the same evening in which Michigan’s Republican Attorney General was publicly celebrating the seeming end of the statewide recount thanks to a ruling from a Michigan state appeals court, those in favor of the recount were celebrating a ruling from a federal appeals court which ruled that the recount must continue. The initially conflicting headlines have now been resolved, as the two courts issued opposite rulings in near simultaneous fashion and created a wave of confusion.

Palmer Report: Michigan recount: officials admit 87 vote counting machines broke in Detroit on Elec

Michigan recount: officials admit 87 vote counting machines broke in Detroit on Election Day

There’s nothing like a good court-mandated statewide recount to get officials to start admitting to their initial failures before it all comes out in the wash. Just one day into the Michigan recount, a state where the election results were wildly out of line with polls and demographic projections – particularly in Detroit and the surrounding Wayne County – officials are now admitting that a whopping eighty-seven vote counting machines broke on Election Day in Detroit alone.

Daniel Baxter, the elections director for the city of Detroit, made the admission to the local newspaper, the Detroit News. He blamed aging equipment and summed up the station by saying that “It’s not good.” This revelation should serve to further demonstrate the need for a recount, and help justify why a federal judge ordered over the weekend that a recount immediately began.

Michigan recount: officials admit majority of Detroit precincts have incorrect ballot totals

Just one day after a federal judge ordered that the state of Michigan recount its ballots in the 2016 presidential election to check for accuracy, officials are now claiming they can’t recount the ballots in the most pivotal city, because they screwed up the process too thoroughly the first time around. In fact, by their own admission, the majority of precincts in Detroit had ballot totals in the precinct poll books which didn’t match those of the voting machines.

Palmer Report:Michigan recount has exposed thoroughly inept and suspicious original counting process

Just one day into the court-ordered Michigan statewide recount, and it’s already become clear why Michigan’s state officials had fought so hard against a recount to begin with. From mysterious holes torn in ballot containers, to mismatched ballot tracking numbers, it’s quickly become apparent that Michigan’s original vote counting effort – which narrowly named Donald Trump the winner in a shockingly unrealistic result – was either extraordinarily sloppy or extraordinarily suspicious.
