Russian-linked group sold merchandise on Facebook

intended to look like it came from Black Lives Matter activists

"Young, gifted and black." "Melanin and muscles." "Our sons matter." The slogans on the clothing that a group called "Blacktivist" offered for sale through Facebook were supposed to look like they came from American Black Lives Matter activists. But they were in fact being promoted by a Russian-linked group working to amplify political discord in the U.S. before the presidential election.

CNN first reported last week that "Blacktivist" accounts on Facebook and Twitter had regularly shared content intended to stoke outrage in an apparent attempt to amplify racial tensions during the U.S. presidential election. The accounts have been suspended and are among those handed over to Congress as part of its investigation into Russia's meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

Nevada trial of Cliven Bundy postponed after Las Vegas massacre

(Reuters) - A federal judge in Nevada postponed the trial of rancher Cliven Bundy for his role in an armed standoff with U.S. government agents, after defense lawyers argued that the Las Vegas mass shooting could influence jurors, his attorney said on Friday.

The case against Bundy stems from a 2014 revolt he is alleged to have led against federal authorities at his ranch in Bunkerville, Nevada, about 75 miles northeast of Las Vegas.

U.S. District Judge Gloria Navarro in Las Vegas granted the delay for Bundy and several co-defendants, including his sons, who are accused of conspiracy, assault and other charges, Bret Whipple told Reuters.

Prosecutors allege Bundy, 71, and his followers blocked agents with the National Park Service and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management in 2014 from carrying out a court order.

Arecibo Status

I just got this note relayed to me via a former co-worker who spent a great deal of time at Arecibo. The news is not good:

Last Post Update 10/4

The workers and families weathered the Hurricane in the structures at the array. The antenna was damaged with a boom falling from the supported antenna structure to the panels below mangling the boom and damaging several reflector panels. The Onion enclosure remains secure although it is feared that antennas within will need realignment as they did in previous high wind event hurricanes. The suspension rigging was not damaged and is being examined to insure site and worker safety.

Costs are not yet determined as damages still need assessment and replacement repair price breakouts calculated.

Arecibo remains difficult to access due to many downed trees, road washouts, and mudslides. Power is running on generators with conservation of diesel being exercised.

Congressman suggests Charlottesville was George Soros backed conspiracy

For more on the legal challenge to Rep. Gosar’s blocking followers on Facebook, tune into tonight’s episode of VICE News Tonight on HBO.

Arizona Rep. Paul Gosar suggested the participants in the white nationalist rally in Charlottesville in August may have been organized by an “Obama sympathizer” and funded by George Soros, whom Gosar accused of having “turned in his own people to the Nazis.”

Gosar made the comments to VICE News in an interview about one of his constituents who is suing him in federal court for blocking her on his official Facebook page. The constituent, J’aime Morgaine, argues that Gosar is violating her First Amendment right to engage in debate in a virtual public forum.

Manhattan DA Vance returns $31G donation to Trump's lawyer

A campaign spokesman for Manhattan prosecutor Cy Vance Jr. denied any wrongdoing Wednesday as the lawman returned a $31,000 contribution from President Trump’s attorney.

The 2013 donation from Trump’s longtime personal lawyer was sent back amid new revelations about Vance’s decision to pass on prosecuting Ivanka Trump and Donald Trump Jr.

The First Family siblings came into the district attorney’s crosshairs during Vance’s first term in office for allegedly duping prospective buyers in a failed Manhattan project dubbed Trump Soho.

“Contributions have never influenced Cy Vance’s work and they never will,” said Vance campaign spokesman Steve Sigmund in confirming the giveback.

Four more journos arrested in St. Louis

At Tuesday's "state of press freedom event" at the Paley Center, the speakers highlighted a disturbing increase in the # of journalists arrested and assaulted at protests this year. At almost the same time we were speaking, there were more arrests in St. Louis. Two journalists from the progressive outlet The Young Turks -- Jordan Chariton (shown above) and Ty Bayliss -- were arrested. So was live-streamer Jon Ziegler (for the second time in less than a month) and freelance photojournalist Daniel Shular.

Over 100 people were arrested last night in the ongoing protests..

Widespread corruption allegations add to Trump Worlds troubles

The Washington Post reported late yesterday that Joel Clement, a scientist and policy expert at the Interior Department, was “removed from his job by Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke shortly after” he disclosed how climate change affects Alaska Native communities. Clement was reassigned “to an accounting position for which he has no experience,” prompting him to resign.

On his way out, however, the scientist noted that there are laws in place to prevent this kind of mistreatment – laws that Donald Trump’s cabinet secretary appears to have ignored. The department’s inspector general has launched an investigation into this and related reassignments.

And while that obviously seems like a worthwhile probe, let’s not forget an important detail: Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, less than a year at his post, is also facing an investigation into his controversial travel habits, which isn’t to be confused with an unrelated probe into his alleged intimidation tactics against Republican senators during the health care fight.

That’s quite a few probes for one cabinet secretary in one year, but as Slate’s Jamelle Bouie noted last night, the problem extends well beyond the Interior Department.

Arrested drunk man claims he time traveled to warn of aliens

CASPER, Wyo. (AP) — Police say a central Wyoming man they arrested for public intoxication claimed he had traveled back in time to warn of an alien invasion.

Casper police say the man they encountered at 10:30 p.m. Monday claimed he was from the year 2048.

KTWO-AM in Casper reports that the man told police that he wanted to warn the people of Casper that aliens will arrive next year, and that they should leave as soon as possible. He asked to speak to the president of the town, about 170 miles (270 kilometers) northwest of Cheyenne.

The man told police he was only able to time travel because aliens filled his body with alcohol. He noted that he was supposed to be transported to the year 2018, not this year.
