GOP Votes To End Obama Rule Designed To Keep Mentally Ill From Buying Guns
The expanded background check was a response to the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre.
WASHINGTON ― Congressional Republicans want to undo an Obama administration initiative designed to keep mentally ill people from buying guns.
The House of Representatives voted Thursday, mostly along partisan lines, to stop the Social Security Administration from telling the FBI about disability insurance recipients who have mental impairments that should disqualify them from buying guns.
The Obama administration pushed the measure as part of a broader gun control effort following the 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The Social Security Administration finalized the rule in December.
Republicans and the National Rifle Association blasted the initiative as unconstitutional gun-grabbing. Rep. Sam Johnson (R-Texas) introduced legislation to block the rule last year.

BMW To Trump: Take a Hike
BMW CEO Harold Krueger said Wednesday that it will not drop its plans to finish a new $1 billion auto plant in Mexico, despite the threats of Pres. Donald Fucking Trump.
"We need free world trade," Krueger said. Adding to The Fucking News, "You can tell your gruppenführerdipshit this is one Bavarian import he won't be fucking."
BMW's decision to keep the factory in Mexico is something of a mixed blessing, as BMW's labor history includes forced labor from German concentration camps in World War II and probably not after that, although you never know.

Proposed (FL) law would make businesses liable if they decide to ban guns
Say a movie theater in Florida banned its patrons from carrying concealed handguns, but a mass shooter came in anyway and attacked not unlike what happened in Aurora, Colo. almost five years ago.
Under an NRA-backed measure proposed this week in the Florida Legislature, victims who had a permit to carry a concealed weapon could sue the theater for damages, because its weapons ban left them disarmed when they might have been able to use their gun to thwart or stop the attack.
The new proposal (SB 610) from Senate Judiciary Chairman Greg Steube a conservative Sarasota Republican who has proposed a slew of controversial gun-rights measures this year says the Legislature intends to find a balance between gun-owners rights and private property rights.
And Steubes plan to do that means businesses would be held responsible and put at risk of being sued for decisions to ban guns.

161,000 Florida voters failed to vote for president
Source: Tampa Bay Times
TALLAHASSEE The number of Florida voters who failed to cast a valid ballot for president spiked during the 2016 election, in what appears to have been a significant protest over their choices.
State officials released a report this week showing more than 161,000 of the electorate did not cast a valid vote for president in November. The rate of invalid votes for president in 2016 was more than double the rate it was in 2012 and 2008.
This number includes those who wrote an invalid name on the ballot, like Mickey Mouse, or left the ballot blank. It also includes those who voted for more than one candidate.
Republican Donald Trump won Florida and its 29 electoral votes by defeating Democrat Hillary Clinton by nearly 113,000 votes.

National "Right to Work" Law In The Works
There is no doubt that Donald Trumps presidency will be bad for the average worker. But one law would be worse than any other, and now that law is being formally proposed.
The Washington Examiner reports that tomorrow, Republican Congressmen Steve King and Joe Wilson will introduce national right to work legislation. A quick primer: Right to work laws (or free rider laws, as unions see them) allow workers in unionized workplaces to get the benefits of a union contract without having to pay union dues. Currently, just over half of the states in the countryincluding the entire Southhave statewide right to work laws, and union membership tends to be much lower in those states, because the ability of people to opt out of paying union dues just because they dont feel like it makes it harder to maintain strong unions, and can be financially crippling. (A union might, for example, negotiate a contract covering 500 workers, only to see half of them take the benefits of the contract and then not pay anything to the union. Its a tough way to survive.) Is it still possible to have unions in right to work stat? Yes.
A national right to work law would be the Holy Grail of right wing anti-labor forces who have despised unions for decades. There is no law that would be more detrimental to union membership. You need only look at the state-by-state union membership numbers to see how bad it could get. Its not going overboard to imagine national union numbers could fall by half in short order. Unions would still exist, but they would have to work immeasurably harder to maintain their financial stability and relationships with members. All legally enshrined stability would be gone. Such a law would make every workplace in America an uphill battle for organized labor. And since unionization is one of the only things that average workers today can do to improve their economic position, this would undoubtedly exacerbate economic inequality, increase the power of corporations over their employees, and make it harder for Americans to have any hope of a middle class lifestyle. So it will naturally be endorsed by Donald Trump, our blue collar billionaire prez who loves the common man!

Pentagon working to exempt Iraqi F-16 pilot trainees from Trump travel ban
Source: Air Force Times
The Defense Department and Iraqi diplomats are trying to find a way to exempt Iraqi military pilots from President Trumps executive order on immigration and allow them to continue training in the United States with the Air Force.
A Pentagon official confirmed to Air Force Times Monday that the department was working on an exemption allowing Iraqis to continue traveling to the U.S. to learn to fly F-16s, and said officials hoped to have the details ironed out today. The Washington Examiner first reported that a possible exemption was in the works.
We are working closely with our State Department and Homeland Security Department counterparts to determine the practical effect of the executive order, the official said. The high importance we place on the Iraqi-U.S. relationship has not changed. Working by, with and through the government of Iraq to defeat ISIS in Iraq is still among our top priorities as a department and as a government.
Pentagon spokesman Navy Capt. Jeff Davis also said the Iraqi pilots may come in on a different kind of visa that is unaffected by the travel ban, but that officials were trying to confirm that.

RW nutsack creates college grant exclusively for white men
Breitbart's Milo Yiannopoulos
If you're a white male, there's now a college grant that only you can apply for.
Created by Breitbart News senior editor Milo Yiannopoulos, the Yiannopoulos Privilege Grant looks to provide tuition aid exclusively to white men. Initially announced in July 2016, the grant is funded by Yiannopoulos and private donors and began its pilot program on Tuesday, Breitbart reports.
"My initiative to help white men further their education is now accepting applications. We've given it the brilliant name of the Yiannopoulos Privilege Grant," the right-wing provocateur said Tuesday. "No this isn't a joke."

SCOTUS Pick Sided With Hobby Lobby Against Women, Thinks Christianity Trumps Secular Courts
If you thought Trump was going to pick someone qualified and impartial, you were woefully wrong.
snip
The Denver Post notes that Gorsuch is best known for siding against reason and sanity in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores. On top of that, he feels that anything related to Christianity including attempts to use the religion as a shield while a bigoted corporation denies women full access to their healthcare options is above secular courts.
snip
It might seem like an attractive idea to hope that Gorsuch will do his job well, but we cannot gamble with a lifetime position. It is up to us as Americans to demand that our elected officials say no to this man, who clearly is unable to think rationally wherever moral issues are concerned.

CNN producer detained at ATL will challenge Trump travel ban under two federal laws
CNN editor and producer Mohammed Tawfeeq was detained at the Atlantas Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport Sunday after President Donald Trumps executive order barring people entering the United States if they come from certain countries.
Tawfeeq was born in Iraq but is a permanent legal resident of the United States and has been since 2013, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. According to the lawsuit against Homeland Security and Customs and Border Protection, he often travels to the Middle East as part of his job at CNN. It explains that he is protected under the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 and the Administrative Procedure Act, which could challenge the legality of Trumps order.
Despite being a permanent legal resident and having the proper paperwork, Tawfeeq was detained and forced into additional screening.
According to the AJC, the suit outlines the order cannot be applied to lawful permanent residents or green card holders returning after short trips.
