After Voting to Gut Obamacare, Curbelo Praises Japan's Universal Health Care System

A note to Miami Rep. Carlos Curbelo's staff: Just stop letting him talk about health care. Earlier this month, the Republican was one of the final swing votes that ensured the American Health Care Act, which cripples Obamacare, passed on to the U.S. Senate. After his constituents excoriated him for trying to rip their health care away, he wrote a condescending, insulting, and lie-ridden op-ed in the Miami Herald calling his critics leftists and crybabies for asking for basic access to health insurance. That did not go over well.

For about a week, Curbelo seemed to get the hint, and kept his mouth shut about the AHCA. But now, Curbelo's back tweeting about health care — and praising a country that has a universal health-care program.

After voting to ensure that fewer Americans are able to get health care, Curbelo tweeted about how wonderful and cost-effective Japan's health-care system is. Except Japan's system guarantees universal coverage for all its citizens, imposes tight price-controls on insurers, and outlaws for-profit hospitals, in a deliberate regulatory attempt to cut costs for consumers and guarantee that everyone has access to care.

'Neo-Nazi' in Florida National Guard arrested after explosives found at Tampa Palms murder scene

TAMPA — A man accused of shooting his two roommates Friday in a Tampa Palms apartment told police he shared neo-Nazi beliefs with the men until he converted to Islam then killed them because they showed disrespect for his faith.

The revelations weren't over.

Officers found a garage stocked with bomb materials as they arrived to investigate the double homicide, leading to federal explosive charges against Brandon Russell — a Florida National Guardsman and admitted neo-Nazi who kept a framed photo of Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh on his dresser.

Russell, 21, was the man Tampa police officers found crying outside his door Friday evening when murder suspect Devon Arthurs led them back to the apartment that the four had shared in an affluent suburb north of the University of South Florida. Russell, wearing camouflage, had just returned from National Guard duties.

Police went to the apartment in the Hamptons at Tampa Palms after Arthurs, 18, told them he fatally shot his roommates Jeremy Himmelman, 22, and Andrew Oneschuk, 18, according to a Tampa police report.

Trump Effect Inspires Radical Christians in Military

Donald Trump’s election has led to such a steep rise in fundamentalist Christian evangelizing and religious bigotry in the U.S. armed forces that the matter is reaching the level of a “national security threat,” according to information shared exclusively with Newsweek by an organization that represents and advocates for secular and minority religious views in the military.

The number of complaints from servicemen and -women in the Army, Air Force, Marines and other service branches to the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) has doubled in number since November 2016, according to lawyer Michael “Mikey” Weinstein, a former Air Force officer who founded the organization.

Many of the recent charges are coming from members of minority religions, including Roman Catholics, Jews and Muslims, and from atheists. Among the complaints: military family and marital therapy programs are being infused with Protestant Christianity, which would violate the U.S. Constitution; open anti-Semitism; anti-LGBT statements, posters, symbols and bullying; openly anti-Muslim teachers and Islamophobic attacks; a rise in on-base evangelizing; and increased pressure on recruits or lower-level personnel and service members to convert to fundamentalist Christianity.

“With the advent of Trump as the commander in chief of our armed forces, MRFF has experienced a massive influx of new military and civilian personnel complaints of religion-based prejudice and bigotry, most of them coming from non-fundamentalist Christians being persecuted by their military superiors for not being ‘Christian enough,’” Weinstein tells Newsweek.

Saudis Deny Visas For US Reporters Covering Trump

Several Israeli journalists planning to cover President Trump’s visit to the Middle East were denied visas to Saudi Arabia and will not be able to board the press plane.

Orly Azoulay, a reporter for the newspaper Yedioth Ahronot, and Gil Tamary of Channel 10 were scheduled to cover Trump’s first overseas visit as Commander-in-Chief, and were approved by the White House to join the press charter plane accompanying the president. But on Wednesday, both were notified that the Saudi embassy had refused to grant them visas to the kingdom, which will be Trump’s first stop. The reason given was their affiliation with Israeli media outlets. Both reporters are U.S. citizens.

Can New York Publish President Trump's State Tax Returns?

CONCLUSION
As the home state of President Trump, New York has unique access to state tax returns that would reveal much about the President’s financial interests and taxpaying past. It has the opportunity to pass legislation that would bolster the longstanding norm of presidential tax transparency—a norm that, when followed, enhances tax morale and allows voters to make more informed choices about the individuals who will lead them. While it is impossible to predict litigation outcomes with 100% certainty, the best reading of existing precedents and statutes suggests that federal law does not stand in New York’s way. If President Trump persists in his refusal to release his tax returns, and if the House and Senate leadership continues to block a floor vote on disclosure, New York lawmakers can ensure that the decades-old norm of presidential tax transparency lives another day.
