How Russia Created the Most Popular Texas Secession Page on Facebook. Plus Calexit, remember!

Lots and lots of links in this article:

How Russia Created the Most Popular Texas Secession Page on Facebook
When is a Texan not a Texan?

SNIP/

Moscow’s ties to the California secession movement, which received a boost following Donald Trump’s election, have seen the greatest coverage — understandably so, given the former #Calexit leader’s willingness to highlight his links to the Moscow-funded Anti-Globalization Movement of Russia (AGMR) at every turn. Only so many people would be willing to open a “California Embassy” in Moscow, after all. (For my own writings on #Calexit’s myriad ties to Russia, in addition to the links above, click here, here, or here.) As Jonathon Morgan, the founder of Data for Democracy, noted a few months back in detailing the online footprint of Russia and California secessionists, the primary group pushing #Calexit was further “amplified by many of the same accounts that infiltrated conservative Twitter communities and promoted a pro-Trump, white nationalist agenda.” Not exactly an organic upswell.

But for all of the egregious links between Russia and California separatists, the earliest foray into ties between Moscow-linked actors and American secession movements, per my research, was found in my former home: Texas. Back in 2015, I put together a piece for POLITICO Magazine detailing the ties between Lone Star secessionists and Russia, dovetailing off a recent visit from the Texas “foreign minister” to St. Petersburg, where the Texan turned to Russian media to fan the flames of secession. As local Russian officials were threatening to deliver arms to Mexico (and unidentified “guerrillas”) to allow Mexico City to reclaim Texas, Texas secessionists themselves were finding sympathetic ears in Moscow.

Then, in 2016, the same “foreign minister,” the Texas Nationalist Movement’s (TNM) Nathan Smith, returned to Russia, attending the same pro-secession conference as the California secessionists — and, this time, with the AGMR, the group behind the conference, receiving funding from the Kremlin. In the time since, it’s come out that the AGMR also helped fund the Texan’s travel to Russia.
But promotional efforts behind Smith’s trip were kept to a minimum. Not only did the TNM not mention Smith’s travel to Moscow — despite promoting his stop-overs in France and the U.K. — but the only evidence of Smith’s presence, besides a clip shared by RT (see 0:12), is a tweet from, of all people, former #Calexit head Louis Marinelli.

https://twitter.com/LouisJMarinelli/status/780362232244891653

And that’s where the evidence, as of mid-2017, stood, as it pertained to Moscow’s links with Texas separatism. Funding for travel to, and organizing in, Moscow; plumping support in Russian-backed outlets like RT and Sputnik; odd comments about funding Mexican guerrillas to claim lands lost. Noteworthy enough developments, but without much evidence of success, or much lasting impact.
***
Enter the “Heart of Texas.” The Facebook site, for the past two years, existed as the most prominent Texas secession social media presence online. With over 225,000 followers as of summer 2017, the page, at one point last year, boasted more Facebook fans than the official Texas Democrat and Republican pages combined.

Hillary Clinton ran a great campaign and I can prove it

SNIP/

Hillary Clinton is releasing her book about the 2016 election, and she’s placing the bulk of the blame for her loss on herself. But she’s also pointing out some of the other culprits involved, including the media and the fringe left, prompting them to fire back by accusing her of having run a poor campaign. However, that’s a silly claim. Hillary ran a great campaign, and I can prove it.

Hillary faced a general election opponent in Donald Trump who was criminally conspiring with a major foreign government to rig the election in his favor. She also faced a mainstream media that was intent on giving Trump a free pass by not vetting him, and free advertising by airing his rallies in full, because it didn’t want to lose its ratings cash cow. Finally, Hillary faced an FBI Director who went rogue eleven days before the election by releasing a letter which falsely claimed that she was under criminal investigation when she wasn’t. These aren’t excuses; they’re facts. And yet she still won the election by three million votes.

But she screwed up by not spending enough time in Wisconsin and Michigan, right? Wrong. She had those two states locked up, until James Comey sent his letter and frightened her least-sure voters into staying home. There was no way she could have anticipated Comey’s letter – and it came so late that there was no way to properly adjust strategy after the fact. Whatever you think Comey’s subsequent efforts to stand up to Donald Trump, the cold hard reality remains that he misled the public about a presidential nominee just days before election day, because he was assuming she would win and he was trying to cover his own ass for after the fact.

SNIP/

In fact the political reporters now attacking Hillary’s book are some of the same ones who spent the entire election flat out lying about her. It’s always great ratings to falsely scandalize the frontrunner while propping up the underdog, and most of the media didn’t hesitate to play that game. Hillary’s mere continued existence serves as a reminder of how thoroughly and inexcusably complicit the media is in Trump’s rise and the damage he’s currently doing to America. It’s why the media keeps trying to shush her now. It’s why the media is attacking her book without having any idea what’s even in it. They want her to go away, so we’ll forget that Trump is their fault.

Meanwhile the media rarely aired Hillary’s own words, and instead spent most of its time lying about her emails. The media ignored Hillary when she talked policy, and only aired her when she went after Trump, and then falsely claimed that she didn’t spent enough time talking policy. Major news outlets gambled that they could spent the entire election scandalizing and demonizing Hillary while giving a free ride to her opponents, and that their ratings cash-grab wouldn’t impact the final outcome anyway. They gambled wrong. The media didn’t understand the impact of Trump-Russia collusion, and didn’t see the Comey letter coming. Combined, they all conspired to rig the election against Hillary Clinton.

Again, these aren’t excuses. They’re just the facts. If you’re not aware of any of the above, it’s because you were misled or you weren’t paying attention. Despite the media placing its thumb on the other side of the scale in both the primary race and the general election, Hillary Clinton won them both in multimillion vote blowouts. Despite Russia and the FBI trying to sabotage her, Hillary still blew out Trump. She ran a great campaign. The end results prove it. Anyone claiming otherwise is peddling fiction.

FB, YouTube, Twitter, Cambridge Analytica, Russia, the GOP & Trump.

In an online BBC video, Theresa Hong, the Donald Trump campaign’s Digital Content Director, has made a number of startling confessions that she seems to think were bragging points. She’s revealed that Cambridge Analytica, the company suspected of having used voter data stolen by the Russian government to plot its online marketing strategy on Trump’s behalf, ran its operations out of the same offices where the Trump campaign itself was plotting its paid Facebook ad strategy. But the truly shocking revelation is who else she admits was in the building, which Trump’s people called “Project Alamo.”

The BBC interviewer asks Hong, “What were Facebook and Google and YouTube people actually doing here? Why were they here?” She responds by saying “They were helping us, you know. They were basically our hands-on partners as far as being able to utilize the platform as effectively as possible.” Shen then bragged “When you’re pumping in millions and millions of dollars to these social platforms, you’re going to get white glove treatment. So they would send people, you know, representatives to the Project Alamo to ensure that all our needs were being met.” Watch the shocking BBC video below

Secrets Of Silicon Valley
Series 1: 2. The Persuasion Machine

Jamie Bartlett reveals how Silicon Valley's mission to connect the world is disrupting democracy, helping plunge us into an age of political turbulence. Many of the Tech Gods were dismayed when Donald Trump - who holds a very different worldview - won the American presidency, but did they actually help him to win? With the help of a key insider from the Trump campaign's digital operation, Jamie unravels for the first time the role played by social media and Facebook's vital role in getting Trump into the White House. But how did Facebook become such a powerful player?

Jamie learns how Facebook's vast power to persuade was first built for advertisers, combining data about our internet use and psychological insights into how we think. A leading psychologist then shows Jamie how Facebook's hoard of data about us can be used to predict our personalities and other psychological traits. He interrogates the head of the big data analytics firm that targeted millions of voters on Facebook for Trump - he tells Jamie this revolution is unstoppable. But is this great persuasion machine now out of control? Exploring the emotional mechanisms that supercharge the spread of fake news on social media, Jamie reveals how Silicon Valley's persuasion machine is now being exploited by political forces of all kinds, in ways no one - including the Tech Gods who created it - may be able to stop.

How do you want us to deal with HRC's book! We know she is proud to be a DEMOCRAT!

So whatever she writes is not malicious towards DEMS and the DEM party. She was also our Presidential nominee in the last election.

The book's timing is great because we can learn from her insights (brilliant woman that she is!) just in time for the next elections in 2018 and 2020.

BTW are there any changes you foresee in DU to regards to future elections. Are there going to be changes to help make sure that after the primaries the DEM nominee is supported and respected here. WE CANNOT REPEAT 2016!

So 2 questions:

1. How to discuss HRC's book which will be released Sep 12th.
2. Future changes in DU for next elections: 2018, 2020, etc...

Thanks, Skinner & co.
