National Guard presence in high schools?

I just came home from work yesterday to find a National Guard t-shirt in my son’s laundry basket. I asked him where he got it. He said that reps from the MT National Guard came to the school and worked out with them in PE. They had a tug of war competition, my son’s team won and were given t-shirts for their victory. The t-shirts say “ National Guard” on the front and have a colorful stylized logo on the back that says “Warrior Fit”. Please don’t misunderstand me. I am not anti-military but my son is just 14 years old and just trying to find his way in the world. Now he’s got a cool new shirt from the NG that he and his friends will be wearing/advertising for the NG. I asked my son if we could put it in the donation box we always have going and he resisted that. The NG visit to school seems benign on the surface but it seems to me that this is how the military might start to hook kids. Am I overreacting? My husband says I am. This isn’t sitting well with me.

Anybody have monthly gift subscription suggestions?

I would like to give a friend a monthly gift subscription for her birthday. This woman is my son's chosen grandma...meaning that even though he has two actual grandmothers, they've not pursued a relationship with my kiddo and as a result, he has bonded with this close family friend that he calls Nannie. That aside, I am fresh out of ideas for her upcoming 72nd birthday and I'm looking for something unique - such as a monthly gift subscription. She's not a big drinker - so alcohol every month might be too much. I'm hoping to come up with something other than fruit of the month or what not. Any ideas out there? Please and thank you.

Beloved vintage DC-3, the Miss Montana, to fly to the Bahamas carrying donations.

I am in tears I'm just so excited and proud of my fellow Missoulians for doing this. I am headed to Costco today to fill my car with toiletries and food so that I can take part in this mission in my own little way.

Brava Miss Montana!

The Missoula-based Museum of Mountain Flying’s Douglas DC-3 will leave Saturday night to Florida on a hurricane relief mission, with the aim of making flights daily for up to a month to storm-stricken Grand Bahama.

“They got their deposit and bank account this morning, so they’re committed to go, and the airplane’s ready to go,” Dick Komberec of the museum board said Thursday. “I understand they’ll be making two trips a day hauling 40,000 hot meals per trip.”

Miss Montana and crew will be based in Fort Lauderdale, less than 100 miles from the Grand Bahama International Airport in Freeport, the largest city in the northernmost island of the Bahamas.

MAGA fun on the interstate...

Driving with the hubs and kiddo up to Flathead Lake for the day today. A moment ago, we saw a MAGA hat on the side of the road on the off ramp. Hubs says “hold on kids!” as he swerved to the right to run over the red hat with our truck and the boat. We all laughed so hard!!! I wanted to share it with you guys. There’s a flat MAGA hat on the off ramp at the Wye outside Missoula. America just jut a little more great! Cheers!!

ICE wants access to Missoula County radio facility.

This made my blood run cold. Partly because it is ICE (no integrity) and also because I live at the base of the Rattlesnake mountains where the installation of their radio equipment is proposed. Once ICE is in the area, they will be here forever. They will use their own radio exclusive radio frequencies that are monitored by no one else. One Missoula County Commissioner is pushing back and I will be calling the others today to make my opinion known. Allowing ICE to use our radio equipment goes against the values that Missoula has defined for itself in recent years such as opposing a state legislature bill proposing a ban on sanctuary cities and the adoption of a resolution to join a “Welcoming Communities Campaign” to assist refugees in assimilation into this country.

I love Missoula and the proposition feels like such a violation. I’m curious to know if ICE is infiltrating other border states/cities?

The loss of a beloved pet and kids...

Last night at this time, our precious Kiwi was here and happily singing “If You’re Happy And You Know It” from my shoulder while I made dinner for our family. Kiwi was a 2 1/2 year old Canary Winged Bee Bee parrot that belonged to my 14 year old son. Kiwi has a flight cage and was in it sometimes and out of it more than he was in. He was happiest on a shoulder and spent the majority of his time on my son’s, mine and sometimes my husband’s. When my son was in school, Kiwi came to work with me...I have a cage in my office for him. Last night after dinner, my son went out to the street to run with the neighborhood kiddos like any other summer evening. Kiwi was on top of his cage munching on some seeds and tossing his sparkle ball around. I finished dishes and walked out front to talk to a neighbor...my husband followed shortly after. Kiwi did what he has done so many times the last three years...he jumped off his cage and went to look for his people. He always finds one of us but this time he didn’t. We have been nursing our 16 year old cat at the end of his life...Louis has renal failure and we honesty thought he would not live through this week. He isn’t eating and he is drinking very little. Last night, however, Louis came to life and killed our special, wonderful little bird...the bird who loved to tell us what a pretty bird he was, what a good boy he was...the bird who sung the Addams Family theme and was learning the Andy Griffith song. He was supposed to live 20 years but he live 2 1/2. It’s not Louis’ fault. He was being a cat. He had never shown the slightest interest in Kiwi before but...last night. Today he is back in his warming hut and not interacting at all. It’s a tragic, horrible mystery...what happened last night.

I took the day off to be with my son. He is grieving the first loss of a pet of his own. His tears come in waves as do mine. We’re a mess today. We miss Kiwi desperately...the little green hand full who occupied so much of each of our days. We buried Kiwi behind our apple tree. We carefully wrapped him up with a meal of his favorite treats...a pecan, a grape and a little piece of cheese. I am devastated by the events of last night and as bad as I feel I would take 100 times more if I could take my son’s pain away. Watching him hurt is almost unbearable.

Tomorrow I will call our vet regarding dear Louis...we’ve had him since he was a feral kitten abandoned with his siblings in a shed at our shop. The vet told me a week ago that we were close to having to make a decision. I don’t know what comes next. I didn’t plan on losing two precious pets so close together. It is just awful.

I know the news is busy tonight and there is a lot going on. I know Kiwi was just a little green bird but he was a Condor in our hearts. This has been a really hard day.

Road trip to round up a baby Peregrine

I'm on the board of Raptors Of The Rockies. During our board meeting last week, director Kate asked if anyone was willing to drive 3 hours east to pick up a Peregrine falcon chick since the AC in her car was on the fritz. No one said a word. I just said YES. Count me in! How many times does an opportunity like this come around?

We loaded up yesterday morning, drove through wild Montana thunderstorms to Bozeman to get the little dickens. She was a little noisy when we first put her in the basket but other than that, not a peep till we got home early last evening. Kate tells me she she's doing great and has eaten half a quail already. We nicknamed her Mambo since there was a Mambo playing on the jazz channel in my car but Kate hasn't decided her real name yet...we're leaning towards something with a fierce, wild Latin flair...Any thoughts?

What a cool day.

Mike Cooney To Announce Run For MT Governor.

Former three term MT Sec of State, member of the legislature, staffer for Max Baucus (to name a few) is running for governor of MT. This is great news for MT imho. Cooney has spent a lifetime in public service and is highly qualified for the job. We need to keep thug Gianforte OUT of the governor’s office in our great state.
