HOUSTON — Space entrepreneur Robert Bigelow said Nov. 17 that he believes that the Trump administration should as much as double NASA's budget in the coming years and make plans for a human return to the moon.
Bigelow, the founder of commercial space habitat developer Bigelow Aerospace, argued in a speech at the Spacecom conference here Nov. 17 that such a dramatic, and arguably long-shot, increase in NASA funding was essential to the future of both the agency's exploration efforts and business plans of commercial ventures, as well as affordable to the nation.
"I propose that NASA should have, beginning in fiscal year 2019, an annual budget equal to at least one percent of total yearly federal spending," Bigelow said. The Obama administration, in its fiscal year 2017 budget proposal, requested $19 billion for NASA, less than half a percent of the overall request of more than $4 trillion.
Part of the reason for the additional funding, he said, is to deal with inefficiencies with some of NASA's programs. "It is no surprise that NASA needs a greater allowance just to offset the politics, much less what's needed to really get going," he said.

11 US states saw strong hiring last month, 5 lost jobs

WASHINGTON (AP) — Eleven U.S. states reported healthy job gains in October, and the unemployment rate fell in seven, as hiring improved modestly nationwide. Thirty-four states reported little change.
The Labor Department says the biggest percentage jobs gains were in Montana, Louisiana, Michigan and Wisconsin, where hiring rose about 0.5 percent. California added the most with 31,200, followed by Michigan with 18,900.
The economy picked up in the fall even amid the contentious presidential election. Americans ramped up their shopping and applications for unemployment aid fell to a four-decade low, a sign layoffs are scarce.
That's prompted steady hiring, though it has fallen from last year's pace. Employers added 161,000 jobs nationwide in October, enough to reduce the unemployment rate over time. The rate slipped to 4.9 percent from 5 percent in September.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) called for an investigation into Russia's interference in the U.S. presidential election, in addition to whether Rudy Giuliani, one of Donald Trump’s reported picks for secretary of state, had any prior knowledge of the FBI’s handling of its probe into Hillary Clinton’s private email server.
“Something is not right in this picture,” Pelosi said in a wide-ranging Thursday press conference.
U.S. intelligence agencies believe that hackers tied to the Russian government carried out cyberattacks on the Democratic National Committee’s servers this summer. Radical transparency organization WikiLeaks published hundreds of these hacked communications, as well as emails hacked from Clinton campaign chair John Podesta, in a huge embarrassment to the Democratic Party.
“I think that the American people deserve an investigation into how a foreign government had an impact on our election,” Pelosi told reporters.

South Carolina’s lieutenant governor says a member of President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team has asked if he’s interested in being attorney general.
Henry McMaster also says he’s been told that South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley is being considered for secretary of state.
McMaster said he was contacted Wednesday. The former U.S. attorney and two-term state attorney general declined to specify who on the team called him.
McMaster was an early backer of Trump.
