Gnat...I just saved a gnat!

Just chilling here with dogs and my husband.

A gnat landed in my glass of wine. It was swirling around.

I tried GENTLY to remove it to no avail. It was clearly drowning…clearly drowning.

UNTIL - - I finally got it onto my tiny pinky nail and held my hand out with it on my fingertip toward the sun and warmth. It’s like it got a MOMENT to dry off….and recover….

And then it FLEW!! It fluttered away with those tiny little gnat wings to go onward and do what gnats do.

My Dad would be proud. He taught me to never fear insects, to always appreciate the work that they do for our planet, and to always make sure we take care of them. I know I just did that tonight.

So Happy Saturday night, DU friends!! Go out there and save a gnat, or a spider, or a mouse, or a bee. Take care and LOVE to all!!

New Way To Lovingly Address Trump Loving "Friends"......

So my husband and I have an old friend. He showed up in our home, recently, with a BRAND NEW HAT emblazoned with “TRUMP 2024”…….

For a touch of background, we have known him and his family for our entire lives. It’s not shocking that he has become a Trumper. What’s shocking is that he chose to wear this hat in our presence.

He’s not a bad person. I have seen him cuddle and save sick kittens, check on elderly folks, take care of anyone who needs anything, etc. He is kind and loving and giving. But his redneck, “gun-toting” mind has overcome all else when it comes to TFG. Sigh. Heavy sigh. Welcome to WV.

Oh and he’s a UNION WORKER!! Let THAT sink in…..LET THAT SINK IN!!

So when he was here a couple nights ago, “sporting” his new hat, I didn’t say a word. We shared a few drinks, some local pizza, caught up on news about his brother and his family. He adores our dogs, adores my husband and me, and has a heart the size of the moon. Not kidding. And we adore him right back. Still not kidding.

We have seen this man weep when his Mom died. We have seen him in complete turmoil over a break-up with a girlfriend. We have seen him employed/unemployed/happy/sad/thriving/barely surviving/etc. You name it. We’ve been through it with him, as he has been with us.

Before he left, I showed him my phone. And I shared a screen shot of a donation. I had my hand on his arm.

And I told him this: “Hey there you! Every time I see that hat on you? I’m going to make a ___ contribution to Act Blue, or to Joe Biden’s campaign for 2024. So THANK YOU for wearing that hat!! It means a whole lot to me because I feel better knowing that you incentivized me to donate to the greater good and not to focus on your hat.”

He snickered. And he looked down, and away from me.

And he fired up his big old truck, and left.

PS. He doesn’t vote and never has. Go figure.

Standing Ovation For The Honorable Cheryl L. Johnson And Her Staff!!

(Cheryl L. Johnson is The Clerk of The U.S. House of Representatives. Someone asked me to clarify!!)

I want to invite all DU’ers to take a moment and APPLAUD the job The Honorable Cheryl L. Johnson and her staff members have done (and continue to do) during the chaos that is NOW happening in our U.S. House of Representatives chamber!! I can’t imagine the pressure…..but HERE’S to her, HERE’s to her sense of decorum, and HERE’S to her entire team for all that they are doing.

She has remained calm and cool and committed to the protocols of the U.S. House!! That and more!!

Let’s surround her with all the heart felt karma we can muster!! She, and all those dedicated career folks in her office, probably need to feel LOTS of love for the amazing work they are doing.

Thanks DU friends. Take care and please share some Cheryl love if you can.

Torn and Anxious

And so I am torn - - completely torn up, torn apart, torn in different directions like from which WAY is the storm coming? North, South, East, West, Up, Down, Over, Under, Nearby?

Should I be looking left, right, ahead, behind? SOMETHING powerful is headed my way and I feel like I could be swirling around seeking solace and safety - - hands to face as I see the storm moving but is it coming for me? Or because of me? Or to surround me with hope? Or to destroy me with their power?

Or…..maybe the storm will pass. Maybe it will pass and the earth will be cleansed and the SUN will shine on those of us who know that while it stormed, we persisted, we felt the shock waves and we survived them. AND THEN WE RULED!!

Here’s to tomorrow friends…..fingers crossed that we’ve got this! Yay on all of us. My DU family means so very much to me.

Tired. Worn out. SOOOOO many COVID funerals.....

So I live in WV. And I own a full service flower company and retail store. Our community is rural and we are located right along the Ohio River. Actually, I can look out windows from my store and see Ohio.

We have had death after death after death…….all COVID……35 years old, 40 years old, 60 years old, 59 years old…..and it goes on and on and on. I guess I want to say that in rural America, we know everyone.

After a grueling day (…..we have two people out right now waiting for test results….), I came home, fed our dogs, poured a glass of wine, went onto our deck to chill, decompress, play online Scrabble, read some news, check some store related info, etc.

And then I logged in to a vendor portal because we are pretty much running out of bereavement items at my store. I placed order, after order, after order. My company has been around for 45 years, so luckily, I have buying integrity and great relationships with our suppliers.

So I bought. And I bought. And I bought. Angels statues, with comforting messages. Wind chimes. Throws. Items about missing someone at Christmas. Items about love and comfort. Products about Dad and Grandpa and Grandma. Items with messages that make me cry. Products that will speak to lots of people who will be facing moments like this.

Items about sons and daughters…..yes…..we are facing this more and more. Parents burying their children. Their adult children!! Littles, who often aren’t sure where they will be next. Littles, suddenly with lives totally upended.

And it’s not that I don’t do this all the time on a routine basis. I do this all the time!! Sympathy work is our most important work at my store. And we do it well. We always make sure each and every piece that we send to our local funeral home is personal, perfect, moving, meaningful. We are that caring.

But it is different now…….SOOOOOOO many of these deaths……..SOOOOO much that we face in my tiny little store……SOOOOOO much grief and hardship and heart ache could have been avoided.

With a jab. A jab. In the arm.

DU is my safe place tonight. Thank you for letting me share. My whole crew at my store? We just suffer together with each and every death. But we are all so overwhelmed now. Overwhelmed.

Shout Out To Senator Reid

I had no idea that Senator Reid was facing the obvious health issues he is facing. Sigh. Heavy sigh. Oh how I remember his leadership.

“Here’s to you, fine sir. We MISS your voice.....but it feels so amazing to know that you are still ON OUR STAGE!!!“

Your service to our country will never go unnoticed. You were an amazing Majority Leader.
