MADISON, Wis. (AP) The effort by supporters of former President Donald Trump to recall Wisconsins top elected Republican did not gather enough signatures to trigger the recall election and therefore should be rejected, state elections officials said Wednesday.
Trump backers angry with Assembly Speaker Robin Vos launched the recall effort, citing his refusal to decertify President Joe Bidens narrow win in the state in 2020. Vos further angered Trump supporters when he did not back a plan to impeach Meagan Wolfe, the states top elections official.
Trump also renewed his criticism of Vos and Wolfe this week.
Vos dismissed petition organizers as whack jobs and morons and said previously that the effort had failed after challenging the validity of thousands of signatures.

Trump posts $91 million bond and files notice to appeal in E. Jean Carroll case
Source: NBC News
By Adam Reiss, Lisa Rubin and Dareh Gregorian
Attorneys for former President Donald Trump filed official notice Friday they're appealing the $83 million defamation verdict awarded to writer E. Jean Carroll and that they've posted the $91 million bond needed to keep her from collecting while the appeal plays out.
The lawyers asked the judge in a court filing for an order approving the $91,630,000 bond and staying execution of Carroll's judgment.
The terms of the bond and how much money or collateral Trump put down are unclear. The source of the bond is the Federal Insurance Company, a corporation authorized to transact business in New York. They are based in Chesapeake, Virginia and New Jersey and the company appears to be a subsidiary of Chubb Insurance Company. The document is signed by the former president.
The filing came as a surprise because Trump's lawyers have repeatedly asked the judge for more time to post the bond and to reduce the amount. The bond was needed to prevent Carroll from moving to collect on the judgment during the pendency of the appeal, which could take months or even years. It's greater than the amount of the actual verdict to account for New York's 9% annual interest rate.

Huffington Post: Biden's Use Of 'Illegal' To Describe Migrants Raises Red Flags For Democrats
President Joe Biden, briefly responding from the podium to jeering from Republicans during his State of the Union speech called a migrant an illegal, prompting criticism from his partys progressive wing.
No human being is illegal, said Rep. Delia Ramirez (D-Ill.) in a social media post soon afterwards.
In the section of his speech Thursday dealing with immigration policy and the recent failure of a bipartisan bill aiming to secure the border, Bidens criticism of Republicans for killing the bill drew sharp jeers and boos from the GOP side of the chamber.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) shouted, Its about Laken Riley! loudly enough to be heard throughout the chamber including, apparently, from the podium.

Jewish Democrats wrongly listed as backers of pro-Palestinian bill
A pair of Jewish House Democrats said Wednesday they were incorrectly listed as co-sponsors of a pro-Palestinian resolution.
Why it matters: One of the lawmakers, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), said he plans to investigate the discrepancy and try to "prevent this from happening to anyone else."
The mixup comes as the bloody Israel-Hamas war has deeply divided Democrats in Congress.
The details: The non-binding resolution, H.Res.902, "affirms Palestine's right to exist and at a future time to become a nation State."

Hochul deploys National Guard for subway bag checks amid rising crime numbers
Source: CBS News
NEW YORK -- New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced a new subway safety plan Wednesday, following several violent incidents underground in the past week and rising subway crime numbers so far this year.
"Anyone looking to do harm or spread fear on our subways, you will be caught, plain and simple. There will be consequences. This has to end. New Yorkers deserve no less," Hochul said. "To those who are feeling anxious whenever they walk through those turnstiles, we will stop at nothing to keep you safe, you and your family members, and restore your peace of mind."
The governor laid out a five-point approach that includes:
Adding 750 National Guard members and 250 MTA and State Police officers to help with random bag searches
Working to change the law to stop people who commit violent transit crimes from riding subways and buses

Trump-Appointed Judges Shut Down Florida's 'Stop Woke Act'
Source: Newsweek
Athree-judge appeals court panel, including two Donald Trump appointees, unanimously voted on Monday to block the implementation of Florida's "Stop WOKE Act."
Officially known as the "Individual Freedom Act," but more commonly referred to as the "Stop WOKE (Wrongs to Our Kids and Employees) Act," the bill was passed by the Florida state legislature and signed into law by Republican Governor Ron DeSantis. It is designed to block certain teachings about race and diversity in schools and workplaces, particularly any notions that individuals might be privileged or face oppression due to race, sex, or national origin, which DeSantis has decried as "woke indoctrination."
While the governor and other Republican lawmakers have claimed that the bill is meant to combat "indoctrination," critics have accused it of attempting to whitewash history and argued that it violates the First Amendment. In August 2022, Chief U.S. District Judge Mark Walker of Tallahassee concurred with the latter argument in relation to the workplace portion of the bill, placing a preliminary injunction against its implementation.
In a unanimous ruling on Monday, three judges with the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld Walker's ruling, finding that the law violated the First Amendment rights of business owners.

Judge: Law partner must testify about Wade's relationship with Willis
Source: Atlanta Journal-Constitution
A judge has determined that Nathan Wades former law partner and divorce lawyer must tell the court what he knows about the special prosecutors relationship with District Attorney Fani Willis a decision that could produce more bombshell testimony as defense attorneys seek to disqualify the DA from prosecuting the Fulton County election interference case.
Superior Court Judge Scott McAfees chambers notified attorneys in the case by email late Monday that certain communications Terrence Bradley had with Wade are not protected by attorney-client privilege, according to numerous people who read the email. Bradley could be compelled to testify as soon as Tuesday afternoon. McAfees decision followed a closed-door meeting between the judge and Bradley on Monday that lasted nearly an hour and 20 minutes.
A spokesman for Willis said the DAs office cannot comment except in court.
Defense attorneys are seeking to disqualify the entire DAs office because of what they have called an improper romantic relationship between Willis and Wade. The defense attorneys say Willis benefitted financially by hiring Wade because he paid for trips they took together with money he earned from the case.

Woman who joined ISIS as a teen loses challenge against the removal of her UK citizenship
Source: CNN
A woman who left the United Kingdom to join ISIS at the age of 15 has lost her Court of Appeal challenge over the decision to remove her British citizenship.
Shamima Begum flew to Syria in 2015 with two school friends to join the terror group. While there, she married an ISIS fighter and spent several years living in Raqqa.
Begum then reappeared in al-Hawl, a Syrian refugee camp, in 2019. She made international headlines as an ISIS bride after pleading with the UK government to be allowed to return to her home country for the birth of her son.
Then-Home Secretary Sajid Javid removed her British citizenship in February that year, and Begums newborn son died in a Syrian refugee camp the following month. She told UK media she had two other children prior to that baby, who also died in Syria during infancy.
