Manhattan public defender Victoria Ruiz resigns after caught tearing down posters of kidnapped Israelis

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The Manhattan public defender who was captured on camera tearing down posters of hostages kidnapped during Hamas' Oct. 7 terror attack in southern Israel, has resigned, a representative for the New York County Defender Services told 1010 WINS exclusively Tuesday.
Ruiz's colleagues were informed Tuesday in a memo by NYCDS executive director Stan Germán, sources said, adding that the incident had polarized the staff. The decision to leave was her own, sources said.
1010 WINS has reached out to Ruiz for comment on her resignation.
In the video, posted by the non-partisan StopAntisemitism X account, Ruiz is spotted smirking tearing down posters, while someone asks, "Why are you taking down pictures of missing children? Why are you taking down pictures of babies?" Ruiz never answers and instead walks away and smirks.

Connecticut judge orders new mayoral primary after surveillance videos show possible ballot stuffing

A state judge has taken the unusual step of ordering a new Democratic mayoral primary in Connecticut’s largest city to be held after the Nov. 7 general election is completed. The decision comes after surveillance videos showed a woman stuffing what appeared to be absentee ballots into an outdoor ballot box days before the original primary.
Superior Court Judge William Clark determined the allegations of possible malfeasance warrant throwing out the results of the Sept. 12 primary, which incumbent Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim won by 251 votes out of 8,173 cast. Absentee ballots secured his margin of victory.
“The volume of ballots so mishandled is such that it calls the result of the primary election into serious doubt and leaves the court unable to determine the legitimate result of the primary,” Clark wrote in his ruling, adding that the videos “are shocking to the court and should be shocking to all the parties.”
The new primary date has not been set yet.

Space Force awards $2.5 billion in rocket contracts to SpaceX and ULA for 21 launches

The U.S. Space Force assigned 21 rocket launches to SpaceX and United Launch Alliance, worth about $2.5 billion in total, the military branch told CNBC.
Space Force's Space Systems Command on Tuesday announced the mission assignments, which represent the last round of orders under a multiyear program called National Security Space Launch (NSSL) Phase 2.
The final batch of assignments were split almost evenly, according to Col. Doug Pentecost, the deputy program executive officer of the Space Force's Space Systems Command. ULA received 11 missions, valued at $1.3 billion, and SpaceX received 10 missions, valued at $1.23 billion.

G.O.P.'s Buck Won't Seek Re-Election, Citing His Party's Election Denialism

Representative Ken Buck, a conservative Colorado Republican who played a central role in ousting Kevin McCarthy from the speakership, said he will not seek re-election next year, citing his party’s election denialism and many members’ refusal to condemn the Jan. 6. 2021, assault on the Capitol.
Mr. Buck, serving his fifth term from a sprawling district east of Denver after a career as a prosecutor, said he had decided to step aside because his differences with the contemporary Republican Party had grown too great to continue serving in its ranks. He condemned his party’s reluctance to take on big issues and said it had badly damaged itself with voters.
“We lost our way,” said Mr. Buck, 64, who announced his intentions in interviews and a video news release. “We have an identity crisis in the Republican Party. If we can’t address the election denier issue and we continue down that path, we won’t have credibility with the American people that we are going to solve problems.”
His announcement followed one earlier Wednesday by Representative Kay Granger, Republican of Texas and chair of the Appropriations Committee, who said she also would not run again next year. She too played a prominent role in the speaker showdown. Others are likely to follow suit given the chaos that has engulfed the Republican-led House.

Joe Biden tells Israel 'other team' appears to be behind deadly hospital explosion

Joe Biden said on Wednesday that the deadly explosion in a Gaza hospital appeared to have been caused by Palestinians, not the Israeli military, as outrage and mutual accusations fanned across the Middle East.
Appearing with Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Tel Aviv, the US president sided with accounts that blamed the blast on a misfired rocket by Palestinian militants, rather than an Israeli airstrike.
“Based what I have seen, it was done by the other team, not you,” Biden said. “But there’s a lot of people out there who are not sure. So we’ve got to overcome a lot of things.”
It has not been possible to independently verify the death toll or the cause of the explosion, one of the bloodiest events so far in the war, which began with a Hamas attack on Israel on October 7.

New York governor backs suspension of 'right to shelter' as migrant influx strains city

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York Gov. Kathy Hochul is supporting the city’s effort to suspend a unique legal agreement that requires it to provide emergency housing to homeless people, as a large influx of migrants overwhelms the city’s shelter system.
Hochul endorsed the New York City’s challenge to the requirement in a court filing this week, telling reporters Thursday that the mandate was never meant to apply to an international humanitarian crisis.
The city has for months sought to roll back the so-called right to shelter rule following the arrival of more than 120,000 migrants since last year. Many of the migrants have arrived without housing or jobs, forcing the city to erect emergency shelters and provide various government services, with an estimated cost of $12 billion over the next few years.

Anti-Israel comments prompt Winston & Strawn to rescind NYU law student's job offer
Oct 10 (Reuters) - Law firm Winston & Strawn said on Tuesday that it had rescinded a job offer to a New York University law student who wrote in a student bar association online publication that "Israel bears full responsibility" for Hamas’ deadly attack in Israel.
The firm did not name the student, who it called a former summer associate. But a Monday online newsletter from the NYU Student Bar Association includes a message from SBA president Ryna Workman blaming Israel for the violence.
Workman, who uses the pronouns they/them online and whose now-deleted LinkedIn account previously listed them as a summer associate at Winston & Strawn, did not immediately respond to requests for comment Tuesday.
In a statement, the firm said the former summer associate’s comments “profoundly conflict with Winston & Strawn’s values as a firm.”

U.S. to restart deportations to Venezuela in effort to reduce record border arrivals

Washington — The Biden administration is restarting direct deportations to Venezuela in an attempt to reduce unlawful crossings along the southern border by Venezuelan migrants, who have journeyed to the U.S. in record numbers in recent weeks, federal officials announced Thursday.
For years, the U.S. did not carry out regular deportations to Venezuela due to its strained diplomatic relationship with that country's socialist government, which faces U.S. sanctions due to its human rights abuses and repressive policies. But officials now plan to resume direct deportations there to send back Venezuelans who enter the U.S. unlawfully and lack a legal basis to remain in the country. CBS News first reported the announcement earlier Thursday.
In a statement, the Department of Homeland Security said the Venezuelan government had agreed to accept the return of its citizens, though it did not disclose how frequently the deportation flights would take place. A senior administration official who briefed reporters said the U.S. had already identified Venezuelans in federal custody "who will be removed promptly in the coming days."
"Today's announcement makes clear that we are committed to strictly enforcing immigration laws and quickly removing individuals who do not avail themselves of these orderly processes and choose to cross our border unlawfully," DHS added in its statement.
