Texas A&M students, faculty protest speech by white nationalist leader

Source: Fox US

Texas A&M University held an event highlighting the campus' diversity Tuesday night, at the same time a well-known white nationalist leader was giving a talk at the school.

As Richard Spencer's speech was about to begin, hundreds gathered to protest. Others made their way to Texas A&M's football stadium for the counter-event, called "Aggies United." The university said the event was meant to give Aggies a chance to “stand together unwavering in our conviction that we are strongest when united.”

Ah yes, throw in a racist for "Diversity". The administration is obviously misinformed or willfully blind.

Ikea expands parental leave to all U.S. workers

Source: USA Today

In a workplace trend that's gaining traction, the U.S. division of Swedish furniture maker Ikea says it will expand paid benefits up to four months for all its workers welcoming a new baby into their lives.

Ikea said its move is aimed at improving work-life balance among its roughly 14,000 employees while attracting and retaining top talent.

The expanded family-leave benefits at Ikea, which go into effect Jan. 1, includes not only salaried employees, but hourly workers as well. And it's not just new moms eligible for longer periods of paid time off to take care of newborns. Dads who work at Ikea are also eligible for longer paid leaves, as are adoptive and foster parents.

Some actually good news. Every worker will actually receive family-leave, both men and women.

'Their Purpose Has Been Served': Standing Rock Leader Asks Protesters To Leave

Source: NPR

The chairman of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe in North Dakota is asking people camping near the route of the Dakota Access Pipeline to go home.

"I'm asking them to go," Dave Archambault III told Reuters on Monday, saying that the Obama administration "did the right thing," and that he hoped to "educate the incoming administration" of President-elect Donald Trump.

"Nothing will happen this winter," he said.

Kasich to electors: Don't vote for me

Source: The Hill

Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R) is urging presidential electors not to cast a vote for him over President-elect Donald Trump, arguing that the effort will only deepen the divide in America.

“I am not a candidate for president and ask that electors not vote for me when they gather later this month,” Kasich said in a statement Tuesday. “Our country had an election and Donald Trump won.”

Kasich was a vocal opponent of Trump during the GOP presidential race and wouldn’t endorse his former rival leading up to the election.

But in Tuesday's statement, the Ohio governor noted that after a divisive and bruising election, Americans must unite and move forward.

This is basically the death-knell for any revived attempt to prevent Trump from taking the presidency. The US electorate will get what they voted for.

Antarctic Crack Threatens Scientific Research Station

Source: Gizmodo

The British Antarctic Survey has a problem in the form of an enormous crack in the East Antarctic ice sheet. Dormant for about 35 years, The Crack began to grow in 2012. Today, it threatens to cleave off the entire ice shelf supporting the Halley VI research station. And so, Halley VI is being towed out of harm’s way.

“If [the crack] continues to move and the ice breaks off, the station would be on the wrong side of the crack,” Athena Dinar, a spokesperson for the British Antarctic Survey, told Gizmodo when asked why the meteorological station is being moved 14 miles (23 kilometers) inland. If The Crack is simply ignored, Halley VI could wind up adrift in the sea.

There is a crack so large in the Antarctic ice sheet that it threatens to set the entire research station adrift at sea. Yet, global warming is a myth by the Chinese so obviously this is just a cleaver ploy /s.

Rare superbug gene discovered on U.S. pig farm

Source: KWWL (NBC Affiliate)

Researchers have found a rare and frightening superbug gene on a U.S. pig farm and say their discovery suggests raw meat could carry the dangerous germs into the human population.

No pigs scheduled for slaughter carried the mutant gene, the researchers stressed, and they haven't found any threat to people yet. And none of the pigs were sick. But the mutant should not have been on the farm at all and they have no idea how it got there.

If we deregulate industry, would we have caught something like this before it made its way into our food supply? This is why dangerous proposals like Trumps "eliminate two regulations for every new one" are dangerous. We risk removing vital protections for society!

Angela Merkel calls for widespread ban on full veil Islamic coverings

Source: Washington Post

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who last year opened the door to nearly 1 million mostly Muslim migrants, staked out a tough new stance on conservative Islam on Tuesday by making her first direct call for a widespread ban on “full veil” religious coverings.

Her backing could add Germany to the growing list of European nations imposing restrictions on Islamic coverings as debates sharpen across the continent over religious tolerance, perceived threats to European identity and possible security threats from Islamists.

It could also signal a pragmatic shift to the right for Merkel, who is seeking a fourth term as Germany’s leader. In the wake of Britain’s vote to leave the European Union and the U.S. election of Donald Trump, the tolerant Merkel became seen as among the last guardians of liberal democracy in the West.

If it can happen to somewhere like Germany it can happen in the US. We have to be vigilant about Trumps attempts to overturn freedom of religion and expression here.

Trump Economic Plan Would Send U.S. Economy To Most Severe Recession Since Early 1980s

[link:http://www.forbes.com/sites/nathanvardi/2016/12/05/trump-economic-plan-would-send-u-s-economy-to-most-severe-recession-since-early-1980s/#5a38930c8293|

Comparing Donald Trump to Ronald Reagan is wrong and misleading. The two eras are diametrically different in most respects. Rising budget deficits, interest rates and dollar will hit U.S. economy and financial markets hard.

The U.S. economy is undergoing a clear slowdown in the last year. The industrial sector, especially capital investments, is already in the midst of a recession, and other leading sectors of the economy are exhibiting tangible signs of weakening and possibly even changing course and direction....

Today it is hard, if not impossible, to see such tools at America's disposal in the event of a similar crisis. During Reagan's era, it took the stock market over six years before it encountered the 1987 crash. If President-Elect Trump follows through on the policy he presented during the campaign as his agenda, such an economic and financial crash will arrive much much sooner.

One last remark: I deliberately refrained from dealing with Trump's domestic social agenda or his foreign policy statements and general references to global affairs. Notwithstanding, I will stress that those may exacerbate the above economic outlook.

The liberal rag that is Forbes is obviously just smearing Donald here /s.
Even conservative economists think Trumps plan will tank the economy. The outlook is rather grim from every educated part of the spectrum.

We cant allow this: Man accused of threatening to slit throat of Muslim NYPD officer

Source: Washington Post

In 2014, Aml Elsokary was praised for her heroism, after she reportedly rushed into a burning building to help save an elderly woman and a little girl.

This month, Elsokary — a Muslim woman and New York City police officer — was targeted by a man who allegedly called her “ISIS” and threatened to slit her throat, New York media outlets reported.

Christopher Nelson, 36, was taken into custody on Sunday in connection with the alleged altercation, which occurred over the weekend, authorities say. Nelson has been arrested on charges of aggravated harassment and menacing as a hate crime.

Amazons new grocery store highlights a huge hole in Donald Trumps promise on jobs

Source: Business Insider

Amazon debuted its new Go store on Monday, and the design of the store hints at a future of shopping with no human interaction.

The grocery store will allow shoppers to check in to the store with their phones, grab what they need, and simply walk out of the store.

The shopper's Amazon account will be billed for the cost of the goods. Customers won't have to stand in line, and critically, they won't have to interact with a cashier.

That's great news for Amazon customers who detest human interaction or waiting, but it's bad news for cashiers, a critical part of the US workforce, and it highlights the challenge Donald Trump will face as he bids to boost the US labor market.

Just another reason why Trump's outrageous promises about jobs will never come true. The economy is changing in ways that his backwards policies will be unable to solve.
