Proclamation of Thanksgiving by Abraham Lincoln

If you never read Lincoln's Thanksgiving proclamation it is wroth a read. Happy thanksgiving everyone.

Washington, D.C.
October 3, 1863

By the President of the United States of America.

A Proclamation.

The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God.

In the midst of a civil war of unequalled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union.

Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defence, have not arrested the plough, the shuttle or the ship; the axe has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore.

Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege and the battle-field; and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom.

No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy.

It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American People.

I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens.

And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union.

In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the United States to be affixed.Done at the City of Washington, this Third day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the Independence of the United States the Eighty-eighth.

By the President: Abraham Lincoln

Hong Kong's pro-democracy parties sweeping aside pro-Beijing establishment in local elections...

Source: Washington Post

HONG KONG — Early results from Hong Kong district council elections on Sunday showed a surge of support for pro-democracy parties on Monday in what appeared to be a significant endorsement of the protest movement and an indictment of the pro-Beijing establishment seen by many as responsible for months of unrest in the city.

Voters took to the polls in record numbers to cast ballots in the only fully democratic election in the Chinese territory, an early sign they wanted to send a strong message to their government and to the Communist Party in Beijing.

Early results compiled by the South China Morning Post showed pro-democracy parties taking 108 of the first 120 seats to be declared, and pro-Beijing parties taking just 12. Several prominent figures in the protest movement won; several pro-establishment figures were unseated.

The turnout — more than 69 percent of the 4.13 million eligible voters had cast ballots an hour before polls closed — was significantly higher than the 1.4 million who voted in local elections in 2015. Voter registration was also a record high, driven in part by 390,000 first-time voters.

'I Could Spare Some Change,' Says Man About To Become Buttigieg Campaign's Top Black Donor

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA—Surpassing the contribution of an African American woman who accidentally dropped a quarter in front of the presidential candidate’s headquarters last summer, local man Leonard Thompson unknowingly became Pete Buttigieg’s top black donor Friday after he tossed a few coins into a campaign volunteer’s hand. “What was that? Oh, sure, I could spare some change,” said Thompson, who, presuming the young Buttigieg canvasser speaking to him must represent a charity of some kind, fished into his pocket for the $1.17 worth of currency that would cause him to skyrocket to the top of the South Bend, IN mayor’s list of African American contributors. “

Buttigieg Campaign Appeals To Moderate Republicans By Touting Low Approval Among Black Voters

SOUTH BEND, IN—In an effort to unite disparate groups of white Americans, the Pete Buttigieg campaign released a new series of ads Monday appealing to moderate Republicans by touting the candidate’s low approval rate among black voters. “We hope that any Republican who finds Trump beyond the pale will turn to our campaign and see just how few black supporters we have,” said Buttigieg of the 30-second TV spot, which featured polling data illustrating how poorly he tracks in urban areas and showed footage of him refusing to shake hands with black voters. “Whether you’re more of a centrist white person or a fiscally conservative one, all whites have a home in the Buttigieg campaign. You can rest assured knowing that we’ve received no endorsement from the NAACP or any minority organizations. For the most part, black voters don’t even know who I am. And if they do know me, they don’t care for me.” At press time, the Buttigieg campaign released a new policy proposal emphasizing how his presidency would benefit every rich white person.

The Onion often posts real news. People point to Obama being way down at this stage. But he was never at 4% with African Americans. For Pete to have a chance this will have to change.

Any word on turnout in KY.

Think Beshear will pull it off?
