General guide: How and when to work with Republicans

General guide: How and when to work with Republicans

When the Democrats are out of power (which unfortunately is way to often), how and when should Democrats work with republicans?

First, it is the job of Congress members to carry out the business of the American Government. This means working with members within and outside of your party.

The How and When should Democrats work with republicans when they are in power, is best explained with examples:

Example 1: “The most bestest greatest clean water bill ever of 2017” (remember, I am speaking ‘republica-ese’ here):

This bill would actually repeal all clean water regulations.

*All* Democrats must vocally not support the bill and get on all media and tell the Americans people what this bill actually does. The citizen Democrat also voices their opposition.

Example 2: “The American Clean water Act of 20xx”

This bill actually does make our water safer with no gotchas.

If republicans actually do something good – should Dems not support it? Democrats are not petty like republicans – my opinion is that we support it.

Example 3: “The American Clean water Act of 20xx”

This bill actually does make our water safer, but privatizes Social Security.

Same as Example 1: *All* Democrats must vocally not support the bill and get on all media and tell the Americans people what this bill actually does. The citizen Democrat also voices their opposition.

Democrats must never destroy programs and policies that represent our core beliefs. Any bill that violates our core beliefs and policies must always be fought and defeated.

Example 4: “The American Clean water Act of 20xx”

This bill actually does make our water safer, but gives tax breaks to the wealthy.

This is the less-harmful way republicans get what they want. What should Dems do? Not sure on this one. It depends on the nature of the ‘poison pill’. This is where the public needs to voice their opinions to their representatives.

I don’t think Democrats should say HELL NO like the republicans do. The better way is to show support when bills do good and scream like hell when they don’t.

Your thoughts and other examples are requested......

Sanders: Canceled ObamaCare repeal vote 'major victory' for working class

The Hill:

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Friday lauded the canceled vote on the House's ObamaCare repeal bill, calling it a "major victory" for working-class Americans.

"The defeat of the disastrous Trump-Ryan health care bill is a major victory for the working families of this country and for the hundreds of thousands who attended rallies and town hall meetings in opposition to this bill," Sanders said in a statement.

"What the defeat of this bill shows is that the American people will not accept legislation that provides huge tax breaks to billionaires while 24 million people are kicked off their health insurance, massive cuts are made to Medicaid and Planned Parenthood and premiums for senior citizens are dramatically increased," he added.

<...>

"Our job is to improve the Affordable Care Act, not repeal it. Our job is to guarantee health care to all people as a right, not a privilege," he said.

Pelosi: GOP health bill failure victory for the American people

The Hill:

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) took a victory lap Friday, calling the GOP's decision to pull its healthcare bill a "victory for the American people."

"Today is a great day for our country," Pelosi said moments after Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) grimly acknowledged ObamaCare will stay in place "for the foreseeable future."

"What happened on the floor was a victory for the American people, for our seniors, for people with disabilities, for our children, for our veterans."

Standing alongside fellow members of Democratic leadership, Pelosi added that the unity of House Democrats in opposition to the American Health Care Act played an important role in depriving Republicans the needed votes to pass it

President Trump and House GOP leaders struggled to amass enough Republican votes for the bill in the House. Conservatives said it didn’t go far enough to remove ObamaCare, while GOP centrists expressed concern for their constituents who had come to rely on ObamaCare.

Many Americans do not know how deadly this republican AHCA bill really is. Thanks to all Americans who called their representatives to defeat this bill.

Stunning polls show Sanders soaring while 'TrumpCare' crashes

The Hill:

To fully understand the huge public appeal of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and the catastrophic unpopularity of TrumpCare, let's first consider some polling and then the truth that Sanders and other Democrats have exposed against "TrumpCare."

In the latest example of Sanders's soaring popularity, a recent poll from Fox News found that Sanders remains by far the most popular political leader in America. Sanders's favorable rating is 61 percent, while his unfavorable rating is only 32 percent; compare that to Trump, whose favorable rating is 44 percent while his unfavorable rating is 53 percent.

Several other polls have shown Trump's numbers to be even worse, with his unfavorable ratings rising above 55 percent at times.

The huge popularity of Sanders in the Fox poll tracks virtually all other polling that shows Sanders to be, by a large margin, the most popular political leader in America, and far ahead of Trump, the most unpopular new president in the history of presidential polling.

Sure glad Sanders is on 'our side'....
