Mfume originally resigned from his MD-7 US House seat in 1996 to become the CEO of the NAACP. In 2006, Mfume was the Democratic candidate for the US Senate seat vacated by Paul Sarbanes(John Sarbanes’s father). Mfume narrowly lost to Cardin in the 2006 Democratic Primary. In 2016, there was an open US Senate Election in MD for the US Senate seat held by Barbara Mikulski. Mfume did not run for the Mikulski seat. Mfume returned to the US House to succeed Cummings, his successor in 1997 who died in 2019.
Mfume could be one of the Democratic candidates for the 2024 MD US Senate Election if Cardin decides to retire. The frontrunners for the 2024 MD US Senate Election if Cardin decides to retire is Jamie Raskin or John Sarbanes. Where would Mfume be in a 3 way race against Raskin and Sarbanes?
