12-Year-Old Charged With Murder, Accused of Killing Sonic Employee

Man gunned down after confrontation with a man who was urinating in the parking lot, police say

By Katy Blakey • Published 2 hours ago • Updated 2 hours ago

A 12-year-old and a 20-year-old are both facing a murder charge after a restaurant employee was gunned down during an altercation with a customer Saturday night in Keene.

Flowers and a cross now stand outside the Sonic Drive-In on Old Betsy Road in Keene. It’s a growing memorial to Matthew Davis, a 32-year-old employee and father who was shot and killed while on the job Saturday night.

According to a statement from Keene Police, the shooting happened at about 9:40 p.m. Saturday. That's when Keene Police Chief James Kidd said Davis confronted a customer, identified as 20-year-old Angel Gomez, for urinating in the parking lot.

The confrontation turned physical and a 12-year-old who was in Gomez’s car pulled out an assault rifle and fired six rounds at Davis, Kidd said.

Trump-era special counsel's final report criticizes FBI's Russia probe

May 15, 20235:11 PM ET

Deepa Shivaram

The special counsel-led investigation looking into the FBI's probe of Russian interference in the 2016 Trump campaign has ended, the Department of Justice announced Monday, and in a 306-page final report, concludes the FBI did not have enough intelligence to merit a full Trump-Russia probe investigation.

Read the report below.

Excerpt:

"The speed and manner in which the FBI opened and investigated Crossfire Hurricane during the presidential election season based on raw, unanalyzed and uncorroborated intelligence also reflected a noticeable departure from how it approached prior matters involving possible attempted foreign election interference plans aimed at the Clinton campaign," the report says.

TurboTax owner Intuit ramps up lobbying as debate over government-run free tax filing heats up

By Anna Massoglia
May 5, 2023

Commercial tax preparation companies like H&R Block and Intuit, the company that owns TurboTax, have poured tens of millions of dollars into lobbying as part of a multiyear push against a government-run filing service that would enable taxpayers to submit tax returns directly to the IRS at no cost.

A free tax filing service could diminish the need for services provided by commercial tax prep companies, which profit from complicated tax filing processes that require many Americans to pay for help.

TurboTax owner Intuit spent more on federal lobbying in the first three months of 2023 than any prior first quarter . The surge in spending comes on the heels of heated debate over whether the government should provide its own free tax filing service that was reignited by an $80 billion funding increase to overhaul the IRS as part of the Inflation Reduction Act passed in 2022.

The tax prep company — which also owns QuickBooks, Mint, Credit Karma and Mailchimp — spent a record sum of $980,000 on lobbying during the first quarter of 2023, more than any prior first quarter.

Millions of people have long COVID brain fog -- and there's a shortage of answers

Heard on Fresh Air

By Dave Davies

Excerpt: Neuropsychologist James C. Jackson says people with long COVID can suffer from symptoms like exhaustion, shortness of breath and disturbed sleep. Some of the most troubling symptoms are neurological: struggling to remember things, to focus, even to perform basic daily tasks and solve problems.

These symptoms can lead to a loss of employment, income and important relationships. Jackson, who is a research professor at Vanderbilt University, says that while long COVID was initially associated with people who became critically ill with COVID-19, he's seeing an increasing number of patients for whom the initial illness was relatively mild.

"This is a little bit of a mystery," Jackson says. "Many people with mild cases are profoundly debilitated [with long COVID], and some people with quite severe cases are doing fairly well."

Jackson's new book, Clearing the Fog, is a practical guide for long COVID patients and their families, giving advice on how to find help, and information on treatments and strategies for dealing with symptoms.
