Elizabeth Warren is preparing a plan to ban mega mergers, allow gig workers to unionize

Published Thu, Dec 5 20198:13 AM EST

Senator and presidential hopeful Elizabeth Warren is drafting a bill that would ban “mega mergers” between the nation’s largest companies as well as try to improve the bargaining power of short-term and temporary workers.

The forthcoming legislation, a collaborative effort with Rep. David Cicilline of the House antitrust subcommittee, would bar tie-ups including a company with over $40 billion in annual revenue or two companies each with at least $15 billion in annual revenue, according to a person familiar with the matter.

It would also grant gig workers the power to unionize, a potential landmark change for rail-hailing companies like Uber Technologies and Lyft, the person told CNBC. Bloomberg News first reported that Warren and Cicilline were working on the legislation.

The proposal would broaden antitrust law beyond the 40-year-old consumer welfare standard, the framework that has dictated antitrust policy in the U.S. for a generation. Under existing regulation, the federal government’s antitrust policies assess mergers based on their potential to hurt American consumers with monopolistic prices or diminished quality.

Elizabeth Warren: World AIDS Day reminds us of this

Opinion by Elizabeth Warren

Updated 10:09 AM ET, Sun December 1, 2019

Editors note: "Elizabeth Warren is a US senator from Massachusetts and a Democratic candidate for president in 2020. The opinions expressed in this commentary are her own; view more opinion at CNN."

(CNN)On World AIDS Day, our communities gather to remember the many lives lost to the AIDS epidemic, and we stand shoulder to shoulder with those who live today with HIV. We grieve for those lost during the decades when our government willfully ignored the epidemic rather than confronting it seriously. And we recommit ourselves to further preventing the spread of HIV, treating everyone who is infected, working to find a cure and ending the domestic HIV epidemic by 2025.

Elizabeth Warren's organization has head start in Texas presidential primary

By Gromer Jeffers Jr.

Elizabeth Warren has a head start in building an organization designed to win delegates in the Texas presidential primary.

The March 3 Super Tuesday contest could help determine the course of the Democratic Party presidential race, and Warren hopes her ground game and ties to Texas will help her compete at a high level.

The senator from Massachusetts has been organizing in the state since August. Warren was the first non-Texan presidential candidate to hire a Texas campaign director. With an office already open in San Antonio, Warren will also have satellites in Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, Austin and the Rio Grande Valley.
