The nominees were announced by Issa Rae (a double nominee for Barbie and American Fiction) and Kumail Nanjiani (Welcome to Chippendales, The Big Sick) via Instagram Live. The nominees for outstanding action performances by film and television stunt ensembles were announced by SAG Awards Committee Members Jason George and Woody Schultz with an introduction by SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher.

As previously announced, the legendary actor, singer, producer, writer, and director Barbra Streisand will be honored with the SAG Life Achievement Award for career achievements and humanitarian accomplishments during the 30th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony.

With 119,515 eligible SAG-AFTRA voters, final voting opens on Wednesday, January 17 and closes at Noon PT on Friday, February 23.

The list of categories and nominees is very long, and I don't think I can reproduce it here. Please click on the OP link to read list of nominations. Many of the same names were found on the Golden Globes candidates list, which were awarded less than a week ago. What's different about the SAG/AFTRA awards is that they tend to focus on entire casts of a motion picture or television show rather than certain individual efforts.

There's less emphasis on technical achievements such as sound effects, CGI, etc. Therefore the SAG awards focus mainly on the actors themselves and how the casts work together to create a better performance.

Today's Tiedrich rant: Hunter Biden is just fucking with House Republicans now, and it's a glorious sight to behold

Link: https://www.jefftiedrich.com/p/hunter-biden-is-just-fucking-with

Hunter Biden is fresh out of fucks, and he just grabbed the GOP by the scruff of their necks and rubbed their faces in their own clownish stupidity.

Wednesday started out perfectly normal enough. House Republicans, instead of actually working to solve any of America’s looming problems — for instance, there’s that held-together-with-spit-and-baling-wire budget agreement that expires in eight days — chose instead to focus on the all-important task of holding Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress for failing to show up for their bullshit closed-door kabuki hearings.

and so everyone assembled, all the usual suspects took their places, cameras started rolling, and everyone got ready for James Comer to start yap-yap-yapping about canceled checks and secret phone calls like some fucked-up Elmer Fudd on meth .... when all of a sudden, who saunters right onto the floor of the committee room but Hunter Fucking Biden himself. he elbowed his way through the crowd and sat right down in the front row and was all hey assholes, get a load of me. anybody want to see my freakishly ginormous dick?

ok, I may have made that last part up. did chaos ensue? oh my dear friends, fuck yes, it absolutely did — and it was a glorious thing to behold. nobody saw it coming — Hunter’s appearance was unannounced — and panicked Republicans had no clue how to react.

Great rant today! Featuring insults showered on Nancy Mace, James Comer and Marjory Taylor Greene. Several insults are heaped onto MTG, who made a total ass of herself yesterday. Thank you Jeff Tiedrich, for going above and beyond.

On Edit - I've added "James Comer"'s name and replaced "Jared Moskowitz" who was actually on the side of the good guys.

Pennsylvania provides state money for public defense for the first time

Spotlight PA link: https://www.spotlightpa.org/news/2024/01/pennsylvania-public-defense-state-funded/

HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania will soon convene a committee to decide how to spend the state's first-ever funding for public defense, though experts cautioned the investment won't be enough to level the playing field. In December, the Pennsylvania state legislature approved $7.5 million for criminal defense for those who cannot afford a lawyer, a constitutional right that counties paid for without state assistance.

“Thanks to historic legislation signed by Gov. [Josh] Shapiro, Pennsylvania will no longer be one of only two states in the country that does not allocate state funding for public defenders,” said Manuel Bonder, spokesperson for the Democratic governor.

Every person accused of a crime must have access to an attorney to aid in their defense, a right that has been enshrined in the 6th and 14th Amendments of the United States Constitution for 60 years. Until now, Pennsylvania state coffers did not contribute any funds to that purpose.

Shapiro had initially proposed $10 million in his budget, but negotiations with the legislature knocked the figure down a few million. The new state money addresses Pennsylvania’s reputation as one of the only states in the country that did not fund public defense. Now, questions remain on how the money will be distributed and used.

Thank you Governor Shapiro!
This is another campaign promise that was kept in his first year in office.

Today's Tiedrich rant: presidents are not kings: an explainer for anyone as dumb as Donald Trump

Link: https://www.jefftiedrich.com/p/presidents-are-not-kings-an-explainer

hey, did you know that when he was president, Donald Trump could have picked up the phone and called Seal Team Six and had any of his political rivals assassinated all to fuck?

ha ha, you’re dead! now I call you Even Sleepier Joe! it was a beautiful assassination, an assassination the likes of which no one’s ever seen — maybe the greatest assassination of all time.

I shit you not — this was the argument raised yesterday by one of Trump’s ace team of traffic court lawyers.

oh wait, maybe Trump’s lawyer meant Meal Team Six. those brave patriots will do anything for Dear Leader.

Great rant today, taking down the idiotic, desperate lawyers who are doing everything they can think of to delay the inevitable justice for Chump.

How a proposal to remove Welcome Park's WILLIAM PENN statue was derailed online

Philly Inquirer link: https://www.inquirer.com/news/philadelphia/william-penn-statue-philadelphia-nps-social-media-outrage-20240109.html

A proposed plan to rehabilitate Philadelphia’s Welcome Park was reversed within 72 hours of its announcement. The pitch to remove a statue of William Penn, the founder of Philadelphia and Pennsylvania, sparked a wave of outrage that ultimately led to the National Park Service withdrawing its proposition.

The plan ended the same way it started: through a set of tweets. This is a look at how X (the platform formerly known as Twitter) shaped the fate of Welcome Park in a matter of days.

Friday, Jan. 5: The Independence National Historical Park account tweeted a link to a news release announcing the proposed plans
Screenshot:

The news release announced a proposal to rehabilitate Welcome Park — a park commemorating the founding of Pennsylvania on the land where Penn once lived — and make visiting a more inclusive experience. The National Park Service, which did not immediately return a request for comment, aims to rehabilitate the park for America’s 250th birthday celebration in 2026.

The park, located on Second Street between Chestnut and Walnut Streets, has fallen into disrepair with rows of broken granite floor. Patrons also say it lacks adequate seating. The proposal included a new planted buffer and the addition of a ceremonial gathering space with circular benches. It also mentioned removing the Penn statue and the model of his Slate Roof House and not reinstalling them.

First ever mullet competition at the 2024 PA Farm Show

(Link) https://www.abc27.com/local-news/pafarmshow/first-ever-mullet-competition-at-the-2024-pa-farm-show/

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – It’s not easy rocking a mullet. The Pennsylvania Farm Show hosted its first mullet competition on Monday. Pete Brubaker was crowned champion of the ages 18 and up category.

“I’ve been running this mullet circa 1985,” Brubaker said. “It’s been a long time and it’s paying off so that’s cool.” He only waits three weeks in-between cuts to keep his mullet fresh.

There was a category for kids 18 and younger and another for people to submit photos of them when they had mullets in the past. The son of abc27’s chief meteorologist Eric Finkenbinder, Neil, took home first prize for the children’s group.

“The whole outfit, the aesthetic, the sunglasses, he definitely had the look going,” one of the judges Brittany Goldberg said.

Martin Scorsese Confirms 'A Life of Jesus' Script Is Finished; 80-Minute Movie Will Not 'Proselytize'

The Oscar winner said he is trying to "take away the negative onus of what has been associated with organized religion" with the upcoming film, co-written by critic Kent Jones and based on "Silence" author Shūsaku Endō's book

IndieWire link: https://www.indiewire.com/news/general-news/martin-scorsese-confirms-a-life-of-jesus-script-finished-1234941542/

Martin Scorsese officially has two new films in the works. Apple Original film “The Wager” was already announced, marking Scorsese’s second adaptation of a David Grann non-fiction book following “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and now the Oscar winner has also confirmed the script for “A Life of Jesus” has been completed.

Scorsese said in an interview with The Los Angeles Times that he co-wrote the adaptation of “Silence” author Shūsaku Endō’s “A Life of Jesus” with critic and filmmaker Kent Jones. According to the L.A. Times, Scorsese “plans to shoot it later this year” in 2024. Where exactly that leaves production on “The Wager” starring Leonardo DiCaprio remains to be seen. IndieWire has reached out to Scorsese’s representatives for comment.

“I’m trying to find a new way to make it more accessible and take away the negative onus of what has been associated with organized religion,” Scorsese said.

Note to Mr. Scorsese: please don't cast Jim Caviezel or Mel Gibson, and you should probably be OK.

I'm reading "The Wager" by David Grann right now, and it's a dynamite story, should make a great movie.

Today's Tiedrich rant: what kind of shithole country lets a corrupt criminal run for president

Link: https://www.jefftiedrich.com/p/what-kind-of-shithole-country-lets

as I’m writing this, Little Donny Fuckface and his ace team of parking garage lawyers are in a DC courtroom.

they are there to literally argue that presidents are above the law and therefore all the crimes that Donny did while presidenting aren’t really crimes and besides, Judge Chutkan sucks and she hates Donny and so this whole trial thing is bullshit and can Donny please be excused to just fly back down to his ramshackle Florida golf motel and crash more dipshit weddings? your honor, I rest my case.

no, seriously.

this argument is too stupid for words. no serious person believes that the framers of the Constitution intended for presidents to be as unaccountable as kings. we fought a whole fucking war about it, remember?

and yet, here we are.
- more at link -

This is a serious rant: Tiedrich lays out how Chump is gaming the system, because he has the money and lawyers to do it. So far it's working because the delays are all he needs. Delaying is the purpose of all of this.

How many judges are going to let him get away with his delays? That's the question. If judges are honorable, they won't.

It's a great rant and worth our time to read.

A group of Pa. lawmakers didn't take pay during the budget impasse. A bill would force all to abstain.

Spotlight PA link: https://www.spotlightpa.org/news/2024/01/pennsylvania-lawmaker-pay-budget-impasse-legislature/

HARRISBURG — Twelve state House lawmakers didn’t cash at least one of their paychecks during Pennsylvania’s six-month budget impasse last year, as the legislature struggled to agree on the last pieces of the state’s $45.4 billion spending plan.

The group represents a tiny fraction of the 253-member legislature. However, under a bill floated by one of the check-rejecters, all lawmakers as well as the governor and lieutenant governor would be forced to forgo their pay during future budget impasses.

Not taking pay, lawmakers told Spotlight PA, followed up on campaign promises or showed they understood the pain of groups, such as community colleges or libraries, that struggled to make ends meet amid the impasse.

State Rep. Jamie Flick (R., Lycoming), a first-term lawmaker and business owner, didn’t take a paycheck from July to December. He said that he campaigned for office on a promise to abstain from pay if there was no budget, and “had already promised my constituents I would have my check withheld until the budget, that being 100% of the budget, passed.”
- more at link -

The list of all PA lawmakers who refused one or more paychecks is given in the Spotlight PA story. The split between D and R is roughly half, so this isn't a partisan issue so much as a personal integrity issue. Let's encourage our representatives in Harrisburg to pass this bill and have the integrity spread out to all of them.

Today's Tiedrich rant: no, Elise Stefanik, jailed insurrectionists are not 'hostages.' what the fuck is wrong with you

Link: https://www.jefftiedrich.com/p/no-elise-stefanik-jailed-insurrectionists

Saturday was the third anniversary of Little Donny Fuckface’s Big Insurrectionist Shit-Fit, and the Wingnut Gaslight Brigade spent the entire weekend lying their fucking faces off about what actually happened on January 6, 2021.

Elise Stefanik, the loyal Trumpist lickspittle from upstate New York, went on Meet the Press with the goal of completely distorting the events of the day, and guess what: mission accomplished.

MTP host Kristen Welker: “do you still think it was a tragic day? do you think that the people who stormed the Capitol should be held responsible to the full extent of the law?”
Elise Stefanik: “I have concerns about the treatment of January 6 hostages.”

“hostages.” beautiful. masterfully done, Elise. George Orwell would be so proud of you.

this is the state of right-wing discourse in this Year of our Lord 2024. shitheads who used fire extinguishers to bludgeon cops, numbskulls who screamed “where’s Nancy” and “hang Mike Pence,” nitwits who quite literally shit on the floor of the House, and got caught and got fucking thrown in prison for it, are now “hostages.”
- more at link -

Tiedrich is just getting warmed up here, but you need click on the link to read his trashing of Elise Stefanik and Kristen Welker. Then he moves on to talk about the Jan. 6th 2021 videos that were replayed last weekend. Not one of those videos shows a "peaceful tourist" enjoying a stroll on Capitol grounds. Lots of good stuff here!

About FakeNoose

Hey DU friends! Baby boomer here. I became a voter in 1972 when I turned 21, and I've been voting regularly ever since. For a long time I remained independent - always voting for Dem candidates. However that changed in 2008 when I wanted to vote for Hillary Clinton for President. But I live in Pennsylvania where we have closed elections, and my only chance to vote for Hillary was in the Dem primary. So I joined the Democratic Party in 2008, voted for Hillary, and I've never looked back. Barack Obama won the primary in Pennsylvania, as ell as most other states, and I supported him in the general election. It was a different story in 2016 .... You'll never convince me that Chump didn't CHEAT his way into the White House. The worst 4 years in the history of our country ensued, 2017 to 2020, and the first few days of 2021. We all lived through it and i don't need to explain it now. My goal is to make sure that Chump NEVER gets elected to ANYTHING again. Not even Dogcatcher of West Palm Beach FL. Whether he goes to prison is not up to me - but he must be CONVICTED of his crimes and PREVENTED from running for office again. Better yet - he should be in prison or six-feet-under. You get me? I love the cooperation, optimism and can-do spirit of Democratic Underground. We're a community of liberal-minded Americans and we know how to share our stories constructively and pro-actively. Let's all pitch in and get this job done. There has never been a more important election that right now, this year. Democrats everywhere MUST WIN. Joe Biden must win FOUR MORE YEARS!
