Team Trump's Plan: Weaponize the 'Insurrection Act' Against Democracy

Rolling Stone link: https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-features/donald-trump-jeff-clark-insurrection-act-2020-election-1234799199/

DONALD TRUMP’S TEAM was aware that, if he refused to leave office after the 2020 election, it could spark a mass wave of civil unrest. But the man Trump sought to appoint as attorney general had an easy answer for that, according to the new indictment of the former president: invoke the Insurrection Act.

The indictment lists six as-of-yet unindicted co-conspirators. Co-Conspirator 4 is described as “a Justice Department official who…attempted to use the Justice Department to open sham election crime investigations and influence state legislatures with knowingly false claims of election fraud.” The indictment later refers to this individual as the man Trump intended to put “in charge of the Justice Department.” The description matches Jeffrey Clark.

The indictment of Trump records that on the morning of Jan. 3, Trump met with Co-Conspirator 4 and offered him the job of Acting Attorney General. In a meeting that same afternoon Co-Conspirator 4 allegedly had a discussion with a Deputy White House Counsel, who had previously told Trump directly that there was no hope of overturning the 2020 election and that, “there is no world, there is no option in which you do not leave the White House” on Jan 20, 2021.

This same Deputy White House Counsel now “tried to dissuade” Co-Conspirator 4 from taking the post of Acting Attorney General. The counsel again made clear his conviction that there had not been meaningful fraud in the election. And he warned that there would be “riots in every major city in the United States” if Trump attempted to remain in office, against the will of the electorate.

Jamie Foxx Says He 'Would Not Be Here' Without His 'Courageous' Sister

Rolling Stone link: https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-news/jamie-foxx-sister-deidra-after-medical-complication-1234799289/

AFTER RECOVERING FROM a “medical complication” that landed him in the hospital earlier this year, Jamie Foxx took to Instagram on Tuesday to share his appreciation for his sister Deidra Dixon.

The 55-year-old actor posted a photo of them together followed by a carousel of images in honor of Dixon’s birthday. “Happy birthday to my beautiful for sister,” wrote Foxx, adding “you are magical you are beautiful you are the courageous lionesses #leoseason And without you I would not be here… had you not made the decisions that you made I would’ve lost my life…. I love you forever and ever happy birthday sis.”

Prior to Tuesday’s post, the actor appeared on video for the first time in July since his health emergency. The Academy Award winner credited both his sister and daughter for “saving his life,” along with God and “great medical people.” “I cannot tell you how great it feels to have your family kick in in such a way, they kept it airtight, didn’t let nothing out. They protected me, and that’s what I hope everyone can have in moments like these,” Foxx said.

After Foxx was hospitalized in April, unfounded rumors about his condition began to spread online as weeks passed without any updates.

There's still no word about the mysterious illness or malady that cause Jamie Foxx to be suddenly hospitalized. Maybe it was something like Madonna's serious infection? Maybe Jamie ignored the symptoms until it was almost too late? I don't think we'll ever know.

But I'm glad he's OK now.

Netflix Documentary 'Poisoned' Reveals How Shockingly Dirty Your Food Is

Rolling Stone link: https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-reviews/netflix-doc-poisoned-the-dirty-truth-about-your-food-contamination-1234798703/

SO YOU’RE HUNGRY, and you want to eat something healthy. Maybe a salad. Whoops. Romaine lettuce and spinach are prolific carriers of foodborne pathogens (a 2006 baby spinach contamination led to a severe E. coli outbreak). OK, so maybe a chicken sandwich. Not so fast: It remains industry practice to sell raw chicken infected by salmonella. How about a wholesome peanut butter sandwich? Well, peanuts, too, have a bad salmonella history.

Such is the hazard of watching Poisoned: The Dirty Truth About Your Food, a sobering new Netflix documentary that makes eternal fasting seem like a really good option. Fastidious, even-keeled and concerning, it’s an alarming reminder to watch what you eat, at least if you want to stick around and stay healthy. Directed by Stephanie Soechtig, who previously examined America’s obesity epidemic in the documentary Fed Up, and based on the book by ace narrative journalist Jeff Benedict, Poisoned favors reporting and analysis over shock emotional appeal, although there’s plenty to get angry about here. The film brings into sharp focus issues that linger at the periphery of the national consciousness, inconvenient truths about the dangers inherent to what we eat, and the negligence of those responsible for regulation. It’s the story of a broken system that often places profit over public health and safety.

Poisoned takes its place in a tradition that includes The Jungle, Upton Sinclair’s muckraking 1906 exposé of the meatpacking industry, and Fast Food Nation, Eric Schlosser’s 2001 nonfiction book — first serialized in the pages of Rolling Stone — that was adapted into a narrative feature film directed by Richard Linklater. The fast food connection is pertinent: Poisoned opens with the E. coli outbreak that killed four children who ate contaminated Jack in the Box burgers in 1992 and 1993. The fallout led to landmark regulation that improved fast food safety, but Poisoned makes the case that much of the food industry has lagged woefully behind.

The film speaks truth to power, quite literally when Soechtig puts corporate executives and government regulators on camera to tap-dance their way around pointed questions and carefully recorded data. “Sometimes the manufacturers of food don’t think of it as food,” explains the attorney Bill Marler, who has made it his life’s mission to hold the food industry’s feet to the fire. “It becomes a commodity.” If Poisoned has a protagonist it is Marler, an unflappable, roll-up-the-sleeves sort who began his journey by representing one of the young victims in the Jack in the Box outbreak. An honorable mention goes to Kenneth Kendrick, a former Peanut Corporation of America plant manager who blew the whistle on his boss, PCA owner Stewart Parnell, when he learned Parnell knowingly altered inspection records and shipped out contaminated nuts. In 2014, Parnell was convicted of conspiracy, mail and wire fraud and the sale of misbranded food, and sentenced to 28 years in federal prison.

Gov. Shapiro touts $400 million program meant to train workers for infrastructure jobs

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette link: https://www.post-gazette.com/business/career-workplace/2023/07/31/shapiro-400-million-workforce-training-program/stories/202307310050

As a wave of federal funding to back infrastructure projects heads toward Pennsylvania, Gov. Josh Shapiro on Monday came to Pittsburgh to tout a $400 million investment over five years meant to bolster workforce training programs across the state.

The governor signed an executive order creating the Commonwealth Workforce Transformation Program to work in partnership with contractors, unions and employers involved in federally funded infrastructure projects. The partners need to agree to train workers for up to six months.

Through the program, the state will reimburse training costs — up to $40,000 per worker — including child care, uniforms, equipment and certification costs, Mr. Shapiro said. Projects that would qualify might include repairing roads and bridges, replacing lead pipes and expanding high-speed internet.

The $400 million in funding comes from the Inflation Reduction Act, which was signed in 2022 by President Joe Biden and targeted to reducing inflation and investing in domestic manufacturing, along with the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which was signed into law in 2021 to provide funding to major infrastructure projects across the country. Pennsylvania is expected to receive up to $19 billion over the next few years for infrastructure related projects, Mr. Shapiro said.

Jeff Tiedrich: Donald Trump is super fucking bad at criming and super fucking good at getting caught

(link) https://www.jefftiedrich.com/p/donald-trump-is-super-fucking-bad

For my 30,000 post today, Jeff Tiedrich writes a compelling rant:

in 1973, Donald Trump and his tyrant Klansman father cooked up a super-racist scheme to prevent black people from renting apartments in their ugly buildings. they got caught.

all through the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, Donald Trump would phone reporters, pretending to be his own public relations agent, and brag about how much sex Donald Trump was getting. he wouldn’t even bother to disguise his own stupid voice. he got caught.

in the mid-1990s, Donald Trump followed E. Jean Carroll into a dressing room in the Bergdorf Goodman department store and sexually assaulted her. he got caught.

in 2005, Donald Trump opened Trump University. he promised to teach people how to become rich in the real estate business. what he actually did was separate the gullible from their money. he got caught.

Yes, it's all laid out here on Tiedrich's rant today.

Dear friends, Jeff Tiedrich likes to bury links into his rants because often he's responding to reactions. In this post I wasn't able to lift 4 paragraphs of text like we normally do for DU posts. Trust me, it's worth it to click on the link above and read the rest of his rant.

Also you might want to sign up to get Tiedrich's newsletter and get a daily blast of his opinions.

Rolling Stone: Trump Calls Biden 'Dumb Son of a Bitch' at Pennsylvania Rally

(link) https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-news/donald-trump-joe-biden-erie-pennsylvania-rally-1234797413/

DONALD TRUMP ARRIVED at Erie Insurance Arena in Erie, Pennsylvania for another rally on Saturday, a city that helped deliver his victory in 2016 and a critical swing state for 2024, while he faces new charges from the Department of Justice and the possibility of him being indicted for a third time looms. But during his speech, seemingly everyone else was a criminal conspiring against him and he, who is himself under criminal investigation, is the one who will save America.

Trump played the victim — his apparent favorite stance of late, brushing off the indictments and charges against him. He brought up President Joe Biden (“crooked Joe Biden,” “a dumb son of a bitch,” and “the most corrupt president in American history” were a few of the ways Trump referred to the leader of the free world) and lamented that he was being persecuted while the “Biden crime family” was not. Claiming that the U.S. no longer has a free and fair press and that “fake news is all you get,” he alleged, “They refuse to discuss the Biden crime family, but enjoy covering false indictments of Donald Trump, who has done nothing wrong.”

As Trump was repeating unverified claims that “disease-ridden” “people from mental institutions, from insane asylums” are pouring into the U.S. — citing a psychiatrist from an unnamed South American country who supposedly claimed they’ve “emptied out” their mentally ill people into the United States — he blamed Biden. “We have somebody that’s not at the top of his game, never was at the top of a game. Never was,” Trump said. “We have a guy who’s a dumb son of a bitch to allow this to happen… Every dollar spent attacking me by Republicans is $1 given straight to the Biden campaign if he makes it.”

Trump also questioned the timing of the “unjustified charges” against him. “They waited two and a half, almost three years so that they could bring them right in the middle of my presidential election, because it’s election interference,” he claimed, calling special counsel Jack Smith a “deranged lunatic” and ripped on his looks: “It’s like Central Casting,” he quipped. Beyond attacking people, he also ripped on cities, including Atlanta, Philadelphia, and Chicago. “They’re all bad, run by Democrats all bad — every one of them is horrible,” he said, citing crime and complaining about how Atlanta’s DA focused on the investigation into Trump’s alleged involvement in 2020 election interference versus crime rates.

My dear DU friends, please note that Chump LOST Pennsylvania in 2020 and he'll lose by a much larger margin in 2024. Why did he choose Erie for this pathetic rally? Because he knew he'd flop in Philly, Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, and Scranton. I'm guessing this Erie rally pulled in as many from northeastern Ohio (Cleveland) as it did from Pennsylvania.

Sinead O'Connor's Final Album Was One Track Away From Completion

Rolling Stone link: https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/sinead-oconnor-dead-inside-making-last-album-1234796872/

THE CALLS TO producer David Holmes’ Belfast home studio arrived sporadically, sometimes a week or a mere few days in advance. “Are you around?” Sinéad O’Connor would say. “Do you have time?” If Holmes did, O’Connor would then take the nearly three-hour drive from her home in Bray, the Irish coastal town where she was then living, to continue work on what would be the last album of her life.

On July 11, just two weeks before she was found unresponsive in her new home in London, O’Connor announced that she would “soon be finishing my album.” The record, No Veteran Dies Alone, had been in the works for about five years and would have been O’Connor’s first since 2014’s I’m Not Bossy, I’m the Boss. According to Holmes, the eight-song album — which he describes as “emotional and really personal” — was one track away from completion when O’Connor died.

Holmes, the renowned Irish DJ and producer who has scored films (the Ocean’s Eleven remake and its sequels among them) and made pioneering EDM albums like Let’s Get Killed, first met O’Connor briefly at an awards show in the late Nineties. But they finally had a chance to speak at a 60th birthday party for the Pogues’ Shane McGowan around 2017. “She was walking to where I was standing, and I introduced myself,” Holmes says. “She didn’t know anything about me, really. But I said I wanted to make a record about healing since I’ve had my own issues with mental health, and music was always a comfort. And as a producer, I always felt that Sinéad hadn’t even scratched the surface of what was possible with her voice.”

The two first worked together on a cover of gospel great Mahalia Jackson’s “Trouble of the World,” which O’Connor released in 2020 in response to George Floyd’s death. Holmes had an immediate taste of O’Connor’s intense devotion to her craft when he heard a knock on the door of his home in Belfast at 9 a.m. O’Connor told him that she was so psyched about the track that she had left her home in the middle of the night to work on it with him: “She said, ‘I couldn’t sleep, and it was 3 a.m. and I drove up.’ She must have been sitting in my driveway for a couple of hours.”

I hope her album gets released anyway. Perhaps add a few of her most requested songs as bonus tracks.

John Fetterman, Hoodie and All, Is Adjusting to Life in the Senate

NYT link: https://archive.ph/V7Lp2#selection-335.0-335.66 (no paywall)

...

You’ve now been in Congress for just over six months. What is your overall impression of how the place functions?
There’s a fixation on a lot of dumb shit. Bad performance art is really what it gets down to. The debt ceiling — there should have been no drama with any of that. The fact that we’re playing with something like that is antithetical to the stability of our democracy. It really is. Everything is turning into a culture war. Not everything has to be a think piece, you know.

Does all of that political posturing make you cynical about Washington?
Everyone here is cynical, of course. But we can fight for things that are meaningful. That we should have no hungry. Hanger. Hangry. Hanger. Hangry. [Chuckles.] Fox News will go crazy if that makes your story.

We’re fighting for women’s reproductive freedom, making sure we have resources and support our unions. I’m going to fight for what’s really important.

You’ve introduced legislation to expand access to contraception, with more than a dozen Democratic co-sponsors. Is there any Republican support for that in the Senate?
It’s going to be very hard. Somebody needs to tell Republicans, like in a memo, ‘You won on abortion. You won. Why not have a serious conversation about birth control? That’s less abortions and unwanted children.’ I wish we could have an honest conversation with conservatives and Republicans that birth control is the answer for both sides. But there wouldn’t be 60 votes in the Senate for that. I still really want to keep pushing it. I want to have that conversation.

That's our "Big John"! He DOES wear a suit and tie on days when it matters.

Please note: I skipped the intro to the story because we already know how he got elected Senator last fall and almost immediately suffered a stroke.

About FakeNoose

Hey DU friends! Baby boomer here. I became a voter in 1972 when I turned 21, and I've been voting regularly ever since. For a long time I remained independent - always voting for Dem candidates. However that changed in 2008 when I wanted to vote for Hillary Clinton for President. But I live in Pennsylvania where we have closed elections, and my only chance to vote for Hillary was in the Dem primary. So I joined the Democratic Party in 2008, voted for Hillary, and I've never looked back. Barack Obama won the primary in Pennsylvania, as ell as most other states, and I supported him in the general election. It was a different story in 2016 .... You'll never convince me that Chump didn't CHEAT his way into the White House. The worst 4 years in the history of our country ensued, 2017 to 2020, and the first few days of 2021. We all lived through it and i don't need to explain it now. My goal is to make sure that Chump NEVER gets elected to ANYTHING again. Not even Dogcatcher of West Palm Beach FL. Whether he goes to prison is not up to me - but he must be CONVICTED of his crimes and PREVENTED from running for office again. Better yet - he should be in prison or six-feet-under. You get me? I love the cooperation, optimism and can-do spirit of Democratic Underground. We're a community of liberal-minded Americans and we know how to share our stories constructively and pro-actively. Let's all pitch in and get this job done. There has never been a more important election that right now, this year. Democrats everywhere MUST WIN. Joe Biden must win FOUR MORE YEARS!
