President Biden returns to Pennsylvania to boost John Fetterman, other Dems

PHILADELPHIA — If a president's most precious commodity is time, there is no place more valuable politically for the White House this midterm year than Pennsylvania.

The White House has showered attention on the Keystone State — Joe Biden’s birthplace — in the final run-up to Nov. 8, with the president returning Friday for his 15th visit since he took office and officials preparing for another visit next week.

The open Senate seat in the commonwealth has for months been the most likely pickup opportunity for Democrats in the evenly divided Senate, but as prospects darken for Democratic incumbents elsewhere, a win in Pennsylvania is becoming an even more urgent insurance policy for the party to cling to Senate control.

Mr. Biden’s latest attempt to prop up Democratic nominee John Fetterman will be at a fundraising dinner for the state Democratic Party, where he’ll speak along with Vice President Kamala Harris, top party officials and the leading candidates on the midterm ballot in this presidential battleground state.

Fetterman, Oz set to square off Tuesday in sole U.S. Senate debate

Pennsylvania voters will get to see the one and only U.S. Senate debate Tuesday night when Democrat John Fetterman and Republican Mehmet Oz square off in a Harrisburg TV studio.

It will be the only debate in either statewide race this year. Democratic governor candidate Josh Shapiro, the state’s attorney general, and Republican candidate Doug Mastriano, a state senator, failed to reach mutually agreeable terms on a debate format.

The hourlong Senate debate held at WHTM/ABC27 will be broadcast live at 8 p.m. In the Pittsburgh area, the debate can be seen on WPXI, Channel 11. Debate moderators will be WPXI anchor Lisa Sylvester and ABC27 News anchor Dennis Owens.

The Senate race between Mr. Oz and Mr. Fetterman, the lieutenant governor, is considered critical for Democrats if they are to hold their tenuous grip on the chamber or hope to expand their majority.

Spotlight: Most outside spending on Pa. governor's race has one aim: to defeat Doug Mastriano

(link) https://www.spotlightpa.org/news/2022/10/pa-election-2022-governor-mastriano-shapiro-outside-spending/

HARRISBURG — In the nationally watched race for Pennsylvania governor, Democrat Josh Shapiro has outspent Republican rival Doug Mastriano by tens of millions of dollars, carving out a formidable financial advantage in a contest widely viewed as a referendum on nearly every major issue in American politics.

But Shapiro, the state attorney general, has also separately benefited from millions in spending by groups not connected to his campaign that have a clear partisan agenda and aim to influence the outcome of the election.

Campaign finance records show those outside groups have spent a combined $2.5 million since the start of the year, mostly on advertisements, but also on polls, knocking on doors, and leaving literature on the doorknobs of potential voters.

About half of that money — or $1.3 million — was spent by a handful of groups working to defeat Mastriano, a state senator from Franklin County. That includes the Washington, D.C.-based Republican Accountability Project, which was formed by current and past Republicans in 2020 to oppose former President Donald Trump and now works to defeat GOP candidates who push unfounded claims of widespread election fraud.

If we could change the Repukes' mascot from elephant to something else, what should it be?

Hey fellow DUers, I happen to think elephants are really cool animals, but the Repukes have ruined it for me. If it were up to me, I'd like to see the elephants' image restored, and let the Repukes be represented by a more appropriate mascot.

Avogeddon in Philadelphia: Thousands flock to FDR Park for free avocados from Sharing Excess

Sorry DUers, this happened on Wednesday Oct. 19 and it's already over. But I'm sharing some good news of a non-political nature.

Avocado toast apparently no longer has a chokehold on millennial diets, because there’s a surplus — so much that it has led to a huge, multi-day avocado party in Philadelphia.

Food redistribution nonprofit Sharing Excess, which lucked into millions of the guac-favorite fruit, announced a three-day event at FDR Park, with the sole purpose of giving away thousands of excess avocados. The news spread like wildfire, and people showed up to take advantage.

Hundreds of cars waited in an “Avogeddon” line Wednesday afternoon that stretched from inside the South Philly park and down Pattinson Avenue, while others came on bike and foot. News helicopters even circled overhead.

“The word really got out there, we’ve never had a distribution event like this,” said Sharing Excess founder Evan Ehlers, who was dressed up as an avocado. “We already ordered two more truckloads for tomorrow.”

John Fetterman rallies with supporters, officials in Butler County

John Fetterman rallied in deeply red Butler County Tuesday evening with supporters and elected officials at Steamfitters Technology in Harmony.

The Democratic U.S. Senate nominee spoke for about 20 minutes about marriage equality, expanding health care, raising the minimum wage, cutting taxes and codifying Roe v. Wade, among other topics, according to Post-Gazette news partner KDKA-TV. The rally came the same day Republican candidate Mehmet Oz rallied with local members of the Fraternal Order of the Police in Homestead.

Mr. Fetterman was joined at the event Tuesday by Butler County Commissioner Kevin Boozel, Chair of the Butler County Democrats Catherine Lalonde, UA Local 449 Steamfitters Business Manager Ken Broadbent, and Maya King, an organizer with All in PA. About 200 people gathered for the rally, according to KDKA.

Mr. Fetterman addressed concerns surrounding his health and continued attacks from the Oz campaign about his fitness for office after suffering a stroke just before the primary in May.

"I'm an emergency room nurse, and I thought he's doing wonderful," rally attendee Deb Talarico of Lawrenceville told KDKA. "He looked great to me. I think he's progressing wonderfully.”

As Shapiro and Fetterman run as a ticket, Mastriano and Oz avoid each other

(link) https://www.post-gazette.com/news/election2022/2022/10/17/shapiro-fetterman-democratic-ticket-oz-mastriano-republicans-pa-races/stories/202210170070

PHILADELPHIA — As Attorney General Josh Shapiro thanked a group of union workers gathered to launch a day of door knocking around Philadelphia, he gestured to Lt. Gov. John Fetterman waiting at the foot of the stage.

“I want you to just turn your eyes over here,” Mr. Shapiro said. “We’ve got the 51st [Democratic] senator in the house! Are we gonna send John Fetterman to Washington, D.C., to represent the union way of life?

“Hell, yeah!” the crowd replied.

When Mr. Fetterman spoke, he returned the Democratic love. “Josh Shapiro’s got Pennsylvania,” he said. “Send me to Washington, D.C.”

The Democratic candidates have largely kept to their own races, but their even occasional alliance is in sharp contrast to the candidates at the top of the GOP ticket, state Sen. Doug Mastriano and Mehmet Oz. While Mr. Mastriano and Mr. Oz have ignored each other, Mr. Shapiro and Mr. Fetterman have done a handful of appearances together and make a point to tout the other’s candidacy in stump speeches across the state.

All Mastriano does is make verbal jabs at Oz in media interviews. Oz says he endorses the "Republican ticket" but he won't mention Mastriano by name. As far as I know Mastriano's running mate, Carrie DelRosso, doesn't even want to be seen with him.

Allies of Oz, Fetterman give advice ahead of U.S. Senate debate: Just stick to the issues

Caption: For the first time in his run for U.S. Senate, Pennsylvanie Lt. Gov. John Fetterman went toe-to-toe with U.S. Rep. Conor Lamb (left) and state Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta (right) on a debate stage April 21, in Harrisburg. (Photo credit: WPXI-TV)

Allies of John Fetterman and Mehmet Oz — including two familiar names who have debated them in the past, but now support their candidacies for U.S. Senate — are urging their candidates to stick to the issues on Oct. 25 when they go head-to-head in a primetime televised debate.

In a race that’s been defined by its viral internet moments and potent attack lines, the late October showdown will stand as the only chance Pennsylvania voters get to see Mr. Fetterman, the Democrat, and Mr. Oz, the Republican, go toe-to-toe on a stage, and for both candidates, there’s an incentive to stay out of the fray, their allies say.

But how much a one-hour debate can really move the needle in a contest between two larger-than-life personalities remains to be seen, especially so close to the Nov. 8 Election Day, experts and strategists say. The polls have tightened in recent weeks, though, with Mr. Fetterman holding a slim lead.

For insight into how to approach a debate with a towering, tattooed lieutenant governor in Mr. Fetterman and a longtime TV celebrity and cardiothoracic surgeon in Mr. Oz, look no further than Montgomery County businessman Jeff Bartos. He’s debated both of them in traditional, televised formats, going head-to-head with Mr. Fetterman when the two ran for lieutenant governor in 2018 and facing Mr. Oz on a crowded stage in this year’s GOP primary.

Charlie Cook thinks this debate "could be big." Tuesday Oct. 25th in prime time - I don't know the time or the channel. (It's not listed yet.) Please check your local listings. Fetterman will eat Oz's lunch because all Oz can talk about is Big John's health. It's a non-starter.

Spotlight: Pa. redistricting maps: Search now to see your old and new political districts

Spotlight has an interactive tool that shows your old and new district - based on your zipcode.

After several delays, Pennsylvania has finalized its political districts for the May 2022 primary.

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court in February selected a new congressional map that closely resembles the current one, with the partisan makeup of the state’s delegation unlikely to change dramatically. The U.S. Supreme Court in March declined a request to block the map’s usage for this year’s primary election.

In a separate process, a redistricting panel in February approved final state House and Senate maps that could fundamentally reshape the legislature. The boundaries survived nine legal challenges and will be used for the primary election.

Oz failed to note gun-violence victim at campaign stop works for him

HARRISBURG — At a September campaign stop in Philadelphia, Mehmet Oz comforted a woman whose brother and nephew were killed in the city.

The Associated Press wrote: ’As Sheila Armstrong grew emotional in recounting how her brother and nephew were killed in Philadelphia, Dr. Mehmet Oz — sitting next to her inside a Black church, their chairs arranged a bit like his former daytime TV show set — placed a comforting hand on her shoulder.”

What no one said at the time is that Ms. Armstrong – certainly sincere in her grief – works for Mr. Oz’s U.S. Senate campaign in Pennsylvania. The campaign for Mr. Oz’s opponent, Democratic Lt. Gov. John Fetterman, pointed out Ms. Amstrong’s ties to the celebrity TV doctor.

From The Intercept: “Fetterman’s campaign manager, Brendan McPhillips, complained on Twitter that the AP had failed to share a pertinent fact with readers: that Armstrong is not an ordinary voter but a paid member of the Oz campaign staff.”

As evidence, Mr. McPhillips posted a screenshot of a business card Ms. Armstrong had shared on her public Instagram account in June, identifying her as the Oz campaign’s “Philadelphia County Coordinator,” above a doctorozforsenate.com email address.

About FakeNoose

Hey DU friends! Baby boomer here. I became a voter in 1972 when I turned 21, and I've been voting regularly ever since. For a long time I remained independent - always voting for Dem candidates. However that changed in 2008 when I wanted to vote for Hillary Clinton for President. But I live in Pennsylvania where we have closed elections, and my only chance to vote for Hillary was in the Dem primary. So I joined the Democratic Party in 2008, voted for Hillary, and I've never looked back. Barack Obama won the primary in Pennsylvania, as ell as most other states, and I supported him in the general election. It was a different story in 2016 .... You'll never convince me that Chump didn't CHEAT his way into the White House. The worst 4 years in the history of our country ensued, 2017 to 2020, and the first few days of 2021. We all lived through it and i don't need to explain it now. My goal is to make sure that Chump NEVER gets elected to ANYTHING again. Not even Dogcatcher of West Palm Beach FL. Whether he goes to prison is not up to me - but he must be CONVICTED of his crimes and PREVENTED from running for office again. Better yet - he should be in prison or six-feet-under. You get me? I love the cooperation, optimism and can-do spirit of Democratic Underground. We're a community of liberal-minded Americans and we know how to share our stories constructively and pro-actively. Let's all pitch in and get this job done. There has never been a more important election that right now, this year. Democrats everywhere MUST WIN. Joe Biden must win FOUR MORE YEARS!
