'How were we so easily fooled?' Top evangelical leader calls for reckoning in the wake of Trump

A top evangelical leader is calling on his fellow Christians to question how they came under the authoritarian sway of President Donald Trump.

Ed Stetzer, head of the Billy Graham Center at Wheaton College, tells NPR that he was very disturbed to see so many self-professed evangelicals taking part in the deadly riots last week at the Capitol building that were designed to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
............
He also said that he's been disturbed at seeing how many evangelicals have made Trump a part of their religious faith, which is essentially idolatry.

"If you asked today 'what's an evangelical?' to most people, I would want them to say: someone who believes Jesus died on the cross for our sin and in our place and we're supposed to tell everyone about it," he said. "But for most people they'd say, 'Oh, those are those people who are really super supportive of the president no matter what he does.' And I don't think that's what we want to be known for."

Too late. The Mark of Trump Worshiping Christo-fascist fool is forever branded on their foreheads, a 666 tatoo in bright Republican red.

Arizona Reps. Andy Biggs and Paul Gosar implicated by activist in Capitol insurrection

The right-wing political activist Ali Alexander says that Arizona Reps. Paul Gosar and Andy Biggs worked with him to plan pro-Trump rallies, including the one that ended with an attack on the Capitol.

At the time the mob was making its move on Wednesday Alexander, a national “Stop the Steal” organizer, posted a video of himself saying, "I don't disavow this. I do not denounce this."

A CNN investigative team that includes former Arizona Republic reporter Bob Ortega pointed out that In late December Alexander told followers on Periscope that he, Biggs, Gosar and Mo Brooks of Alabama, three Republican members of Congress, were planning something big.

The CNN article noted that while Alexander did not call for violence, he said, "It was to build momentum and pressure and then on the day change hearts and minds of Congress peoples who weren't yet decided or who saw everyone outside and said, 'I can't be on the other side of that mob.'"

Extremists intensify calls for violence ahead of Inauguration Day
snip---
Advance Democracy, Inc., a nonpartisan governance watchdog, highlighted red flags on social media. In the six days leading up to the event, for instance, there were 1,480 posts from QAnon-related accounts that referenced the event and contained terms of violence. On Parler, the report said, multiple posts referenced war, including statements like "the war begins today."

Ali Alexander, a political activist who has organized pro-Trump rallies, including one of the demonstrations that converged on the Capitol lawn Wednesday, accused the left of "trying to push us to war." In late December, Alexander told followers on Periscope that he and three GOP congressman -- Reps. Paul Gosar and Andy Biggs of Arizona and Rep. Mo Brooks of Alabama -- were planning something big.

"It was to build momentum and pressure and then on the day change hearts and minds of Congress peoples who weren't yet decided or who saw everyone outside and said, 'I can't be on the other side of that mob,'" Ali said, though he did not call for violence.

Some of Rep. Gosar's siblings want him expelled from Congress after deadly riot at Capitol

Three of Rep. Paul Gosar's siblings have reached out to Rep. Raúl Grijalva asking him to help get their brother expelled from Congress after the deadly riot at the U.S. Capitol they blame him for helping to instigate.

It is the third time in three years members of the Arizona Republican's family have taken dramatic steps hoping to derail his political career.
...............
"We know him to be an extremist and we took that very seriously," said Seattle resident Jennifer Gosar, one of Paul Gosar's nine siblings. "I believe that my brother has been a constant perpetrator of misinformation. ... I've been incredulous at the lack of accountability thus far. I would think Wednesday would be certainly a line."

"He's set a dangerous sort of precedent along the 10 years he's been in office," said Tim Gosar of Fort Collins, Colo. "When you talk about what happened the other day, you're talking about treason. You're talking about overthrowing the government. That's what this is. If that doesn't rise to the level of expulsion, what does?"

Arrested Proud Boys chairman has history of business failure, apparently lives with mom

Enrique Tarrio, the Proud Boy leader who toured the White House last month and was arrested Tuesday in Washington on vandalism and weapons charges, appears to have ties to a Republican mega-donor as well as the owner of a landmark Washington nightspot popular among conservatives. Tarrio, the neofascist group's chairman and a convicted felon, also failed to file federally mandated financial disclosures related to his brief, unsuccessful congressional campaign last year, and appears connected to a number of businesses, most of them defunct and none of them apparently profitable.

Despite the Harrington Hotel's efforts to distance itself from the Proud Boys, who in November brawled on the streets of the nation's capital with counter-protesters and police, the owner of Harry's, the downtown landmark bar, was one of the first donors to Tarrio's ill-fated 2020 congressional campaign.
........
As Salon previously reported, Tarrio still has not paid the $1.2 million in restitution he owes to Abbott Labs for stealing and reselling diabetes test strips, a crime for which he was sentenced to 16 months in federal prison in 2014. The conviction raises new questions about how Tarrio was cleared for a White House tour last month, when he posted photos from inside the gates ahead of a violent pro-Trump rally, claiming he had received a "last-minute invite to an undisclosed location."
.........
In a further wrinkle, Tarrio was joined at the White House by other members of his group Latinos for Trump, including Bianca Garcia, the president, and her son, Armani Garcia, a former intern for Rep. Jody Hice, R-Ga. The plane that flew the group, including Tarrio, to Washington is owned by Texas Republican mega-donor Steven Webster, through Webster Air. During the 2020 election cycle, Webster contributed nearly $400,000 to GOP campaigns and committees, including tens of thousands of dollars to committees supporting President Trump.

Close to 100% of the domestic terrorists who stormed the Capitol

were Republicans or RW independents/Libertarians. The Sedition Caucus is 100% comprised of Republicans. 45% of Republicans support the storming of the Capitol.

We need to end the Electoral College, and, by doing so, permanently end the Republican threat to our democracy. The Republican party has become an instrument of fascist insanity, as we have witnessed over the last four years. When Joe, or Kamala, wins the next Presidential Election, Republicans will fight to overturn the legitimate results of the election again, just like they are still doing now, 2 months after Democrats won in November.

The best path to preventing these fascists from destroying democracy and overthrowing our government, and subsequently instituting an authoritarian fascist dictatorship, is to eliminate the Electoral College, and have Presidential Elections decided by popular vote.

Republicans have proven, beyond all reasonable doubt, that they cannot be trusted to recognize the results of a legitimate election, and will challenge the results of a legitimate election, by any means possible, including violence and other seditious activity. Trump did not orchestrate this debacle all on his own. He had almost universal cooperation in orchestrating a coup from the Republican party, from Republican administration officials, Republican Senators, Republican Representatives in the House, right on down to the Republican white supremacist terrorist filth that is still plotting to overthrow our government as you read this.

If we want the United States to remain a free and fair democracy, we must eliminate the Electoral College before the next Presidential Election.

Is the Sedition Caucus plotting to prolong the Electoral Vote Count as long as they can,

with the deliberate intention of sustaining the violence in the streets of Washington DC as long as possible, consequently accelerating the violence, in order to deliberately give Trump an excuse to impose martial law?

What the Sedition Caucus is doing is dangerous to democracy, and to human life and property as well. The Sedition Caucus fully understands that the longer they prolong the vote count, the more the unrest and violence in the streets will increase. The neo-Nazi element among the protesters, whose collective intention is to overturn the election and install Trump as dictator, by any means including full scale violence, fully understands that the longer the vote count goes on, the more opportunity they have to incite a full scale, out of control violent riot in the streets of Washington DC.

It is not reasonable to think that the Sedition Caucus members do not individually and collectively understand this, which leads to justifiable speculation that their deliberate prolonging of the vote count, under false pretenses, is being done for seditious purposes.

At the very least, the Sedition Caucus will be directly responsible for much of the physical harm done to the police, and other innocent people, and any property damage that Trump supporters cause, in their quest to end democracy, and install Trump as dictator.

It's now crystal clear that we must make every effort to end the Electoral College,

and have the popular vote be the only method of determining the winner of presidential elections.

This disgraceful debacle brought on by Trump and Republicans is the straw that broke the Electoral College's back.

Robert Reich: 'Sedition' of Trump-supporting senators has a silver lining

I've been in or around politics for over a half century now, and I never imagined how low and looney the Republican Party would become. Eleven Republican senators and senators-elect said today they will vote to reject President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr.'s victory next Wednesday when Congress meets to formally certify it.

They are joining a growing movement in the GOP to defy the unambiguous results of the 2020 presidential election and support Trump's bizarre attempt to remain in power with false claims of voting fraud.

Remember: Every state has now certified the election results after verifying their accuracy. Several underwent post-election audits or hand counts. At the same time, judges across America, including Supreme Court justices, have rejected nearly 60 attempts by Trump and his allies to challenge the results.
-------
The one consolation, if it can be called that, is that their cynical ploy will also force other Republican members of Congress to openly choose between doing their constitutional duty and accepting the results of the election, or displaying brazen loyalty to a fading demagogue who has sought to turn the GOP into a personal cult. In short, it will smoke them out: They must openly choose democracy or fascism.

The Atlantic: Worse Than Treason

“We are what we pretend to be,” Kurt Vonnegut wrote in the opening of his 1962 novel, Mother Night, “and so we must be careful what we pretend to be.” Republicans in Congress are pretending to be seditionists—and so they have become, in fact, seditionists.

Forget all the whispered denials and the off-the-record expressions of concern in private; ignore the knowing smirks on camera from GOP officials who are desperately trying to indicate that they’re in on the joke. Brush aside the caviling of the anti-anti-Trump writers who would rather talk about that time in 2017 when some Democrats objected to the Electoral College vote (and were gaveled down by Joe Biden himself).

This is sedition, plain and simple. No amount of playacting and rationalizing can change the fact that the majority of the Republican Party and its apologists are advocating for the overthrow of an American election and the continued rule of a sociopathic autocrat.
-------
The sedition caucus is worse than a treasonous conspiracy. At least real traitors believe in something. These people instead believe only in their own fortunes and thus will change flags and loyalties as circumstances require. They will always become what they pretend to be, and so they cannot—and must not—be trusted ever again with political power.
