White House Threatens Turkey With Crippling Sanctions

Source: New York Times

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration on Friday belatedly threatened new sanctions against Turkey that officials said could cripple Turkey’s economy in response to its military offensive against Kurds in northern Syria.

President Trump will sign an executive order giving the Treasury Department new powers to punish Turkish government officials if Turkey targets ethnic and religious minorities in its operations against the Kurds. The White House also warned that if any Islamic State fighters being held in prisons in the area were allowed by Turkey to escape, the United States would respond forcefully.

“We can shut down the Turkish economy if we need to,” the Treasury secretary, Steven Mnuchin, said in a briefing at the White House.
The Trump administration said, however, that it was not yet moving ahead with any new sanctions against Turkey.

I'm sure those threats are of great comfort to those being slaughtered right now.

At this point, what do you think will be the outcome of Trump impeachment proceedings?

Here are the likely options as I see it:

1. House inquiry does not result in impeachment vote (extremely unlikely but who knows?)
2. House votes to impeach but Senate acquits or avoids a vote altogether (most likely scenario, IMO)
3. Senate convicts Trump and Pence becomes POTUS (only likely if something drastic happens)
4. At some point before Senate conviction vote, Trump resigns (not a chance in hell for that narcissistic a-hole IMO)
5. Other outcome?

Most of my (non-DU) friends are afraid to even be hopeful.

I know some say there's another option: Pence & Trump get impeached and Pelosi becomes POTUS, but as I understand it, the timing would have to be such that both are removed at the same time. Otherwise whoever's POTUS can name a new VP. And I DO think there's a long line of bootlicking thugs who would take the job.

I'm going to swim with otters! I'm going to SWIM with OTTERS!!!

OMG. I've been trying to get tickets for a couple of years, and now it's finally happening on the day after Thanksgiving!

check out nurturedbynature.org -- It's a non-profit rescue/education/conservation group near San Diego, and they do amazing things (like working with Make-A-Wish kids). There's very limited public encounters to help defray costs.

Mr. Giblets is going to be the over the MOON--he's the only person I know who loves otters more than me.

Ahhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!

Defying Trump Administration, Calif. Offers Federal Workers Unemployment Benefits

Source: NPR

California Gov. Gavin Newsom says the Trump administration has told states they can't offer unemployment benefits to federal employees who are required to report to work without pay during the government shutdown.

Newsom called a letter sent to states by the U.S. Department of Labor "jaw-dropping and extraordinary" as he met with TSA workers at the Sacramento International Airport Thursday afternoon. "So, the good news is, we're going to do it, and shame on them."

The governor explained that California will offer the workers unemployment coverage, despite the federal government telling the state it can't do so for workers still on the job. Newsom says he believes California is on strong legal footing.

There's a picture of Newsom hugging one of the TSA workers at the Sacramento airport. I love this guy.

Holy hell, they're rebooting "infrastructure Week". Again.

On Rachel's sign-off tonight she announced this. Also that the last IW's were overshadowed by:

1) Firing Comey
2) "Very Fine People on Both Sides
3) Revelations about paying off a porn star

Hold on to your butts!

Assholes like to have someone tell them it's okay to be an asshole

Who knew our country was so full of jerks? Someone like Obama makes assholes feel shame, and they hate that.

It's like watching Jerry Springer to make your own family & relationships seems "not so bad".

Something else I'd like Michael Cohen to help us all understand: Loyalty to Trump

I utterly fail to understand why anyone would be loyal to someone so vain, self-absorbed, incapable of humility or empathy, who gaslights and blames victims, who is so OBVIOUSLY full of shit and a con artist.

Why do we need this information? Because if someone can actually explain it, maybe we can use it against Trump's blind, stupid, arrogant followers.

Michael Cohen is famous for saying he'd "take a bullet for Mistah Trump". Not until Trump left Cohen swinging in the wind and facing dozens of years in prison, did that fool see the light and become (his words) a "patriot".

What will it take for 1/3 of America to do the same?

Waiting breathlessly to see how Melanie will decorate the WH this year.

Last year I believe the theme was "Have yourself a bleary little Christmas (instead of mistletoe, she went with the world's largest cameltoe)".

Yeah, pretty sure that was it.
