NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India and China have agreed to an “expeditious disengagement” of troops at a disputed border area where their soldiers have been locked in stand-off for more than two months, the South Asian nation’s foreign ministry said on Monday.
The decision comes ahead of a summit of the BRICS nations - a grouping that also includes Brazil, Russia and South Africa - in China early next month, which Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend. (Graphic: China-India border dispute - tmsnrt.rs/2hlUh9H)
“In recent weeks, India and China have maintained diplomatic communication in respect of the incident at Doklam,” India’s ministry of external affairs said, referring to the area in the Himalayas close to the borders of China, India and Bhutan.
“On this basis, expeditious disengagement of border personnel at the face-off site at Doklam has been agreed to and is on-going,” it said in a statement.

BEIJING (Reuters) - China’s Foreign Ministry on Monday said Indian troops had withdrawn to the Indian side of a disputed border area where the two countries’ soldiers had been locked in stand-off for more than two months.
Speaking at a daily news briefing, ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said Chinese troops would continue to patrol the disputed Doklam region.
Earlier on Monday, India’s foreign ministry said it had agreed with China to an “expeditious disengagement” of troops at the disputed border area.

Philippines' Duterte orders police to kill 'idiots' who resist arrest

Rodrigo Duterte has told Philippines police they are allowed to kill “idiots” who violently resist arrest, two days after hundreds of people turned the funeral of a dead teenager into a protest against the president’s deadly war on drugs.
Duterte broke off midway through a prepared speech at the Heroes’ Cemetery on the outskirts of Manila on Monday and addressed impromptu comments to Jovie Espenido, the police chief of a town in the south where the mayor was killed in an anti-drugs raid.
“Your duty requires you to overcome the resistance of the person you are arresting ... {if} he resists, and it is a violent one ... you are free to kill the idiots, that is my order to you,” Duterte told the police officer.
Duterte added that “murder and homicide and unlawful killings” were not allowed and that police had to uphold the rule of law while carrying out their duties.

USS John S McCain: bodies of 10 sailors recovered after collision with tanker

Divers have recovered the remains of all 10 sailors who went missing after the USS John S McCain and an oil tanker collided near Singapore last week, the US Navy said Monday.
Navy and Marine Corps divers had been searching in flooded compartments of the destroyer after the damaged ship docked in Singapore. The cause of the 21 August collision is under investigation.
The commander of the navy’s Japan-based 7th Fleet was fired last week after a series of accidents this year raised questions about its operations.
The firing of Vice Admiral Joseph Aucoin, a three-star admiral, was a rare dismissal of a high-ranking officer for operational reasons.

The Myanmar government has evacuated at least 4,000 non-Muslim villagers amid ongoing clashes in north-western Rakhine state, the government said, while thousands of Rohingya Muslims fled across the border to Bangladesh.
The death toll from the violence that erupted on Friday with coordinated attacks by Rohingya insurgents has climbed to 98, including 80 insurgents and 12 members of the security forces, the government said. The clashes, the worst since at least October, have prompted the government to evacuate staff and thousands of non-Muslim villagers from the area.
The treatment of approximately 1.1 million Muslim Rohingya in mainly Buddhist Myanmar has emerged as the biggest challenge for national leader Aung San Suu Kyi. On Friday she condemned the raids in which insurgents wielding guns, sticks and homemade bombs assaulted 30 police stations and an army base.
The Nobel peace prize laureate has been accused by some Western critics of not speaking out for the long-persecuted Muslim minority, and of defending the army’s counteroffensive after the October attacks.

World in midst of Cold War 2.0, says Germany's Sigmar Gabriel

German foreign minister Sigmar Gabriel has warned the world is facing a “new phase of nuclear rearmament,” and is in the midst of “Cold War 2.0.”
In an interview with German paper Bild, Gabriel spoke of the new “ice age” between the West and Russia and the danger of both sides building up their weapons.
Germany should speak up to denounce the move, he added.
When asked who is the worst out of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin, Gabriel noted that the one thing they have in common is their focus on strength as a means to gain respect. They see the world “as an arena, a battleground … This is a dangerous development,” he added.
