U.S. Navy test shows 60% of carrier crew have coronavirus antibodies

U.S. Navy test shows 60% of carrier crew have coronavirus antibodies

Text:
A U.S. Navy investigation into the spread of the coronavirus aboard the Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier found that about 60 percent of sailors tested had antibodies for the virus, suggesting a far higher infection rate than previously known on one of world's largest warships.

I assume this means these sailors must be quarantined and tested safe before going on shore leave. That's so sad.

There's research that shows almost 50% of people carrying this virus do not show symptoms over extended periods of time. That's very frightening for people like myself that are high risk. That also makes the opening up of public venues even more risky considering we have limited testing and virtually zero organized, planned contact tracing.

Best wishes go out to all our service members that must work in confined quarters......

Here's the original source of that story with a neat witness interview....

Woman evicted after allegedly throwing ice on protesters
Protesters were walking near Omni Hotel when they said a woman in the apartments began throwing ice from her balcony.
Author: Jessie Cohen, Bethanni Williams

Note the balconies here on the upper right side of this photo. The protester they interviewed said the ice came from about 20-stories up so for perspective:

Projectiles with that velocity could have killed someone or could easily put out someone's eye.

In this case, I believe the woman should have charges brought against her......

Former Trump Hotel Housekeeper Sues Over Alleged Religious Discrimination

Former Trump Hotel Housekeeper Sues Over Alleged Religious Discrimination
By Joe Schneider / Bloomberg
June 3, 2020

Read it here: https://time.com/5847248/trump-hotel-maid-fired-refusing-working-church-sundays/

(snip)
A former housekeeper at President Donald Trump’s Las Vegas hotel claims she was fired for refusing to work Sundays so she could attend church.

Sonia Perez, 56, said she worked at Trump International Hotel from 2010 to 2015 without incident, with Sundays off so she could attend religious services at her non-denominational Christian church. But after the employees unionized in 2018, Perez says in a lawsuit, filed Tuesday in Las Vegas federal court, her shift was changed to include Sundays.

Perez refused to come to work on Sundays “because of her sincerely held religious belief,” according to the lawsuit.

The lawsuit comes a day after protesters were forcibly cleared from in front of the White House by police so Trump could walk to a nearby church and hold up a Bible for photographers.

Well, that sort of throws him into a quandary! What will his evangelicals say about this one? He insists people have the freedom to go to church despite a global pandemic, yet his employees can't go to church due to that thing called work.

Publication from WHO containing revised homemade mask recommendations

This document relates to a message issued by Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization on Friday where he stated: "The updated guidance also contains new information on the composition of fabric masks. @WHO advises that fabric masks should consist of at least three layers of different material. We also provide guidance on how to wash and maintain a fabric mask & how to use a mask safely."

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Advice on the use of masks in the context of COVID-19 (PDF file)
Interim guidance

5 June 2020

This document is an update of the guidance published on 6 April 2020 and includes updated scientific evidence relevant to the use of masks for preventing transmission of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) as well as practical considerations.

Go to: https://www.who.int/publications/i/item/advice-on-the-use-of-masks-in-the-community-during-home-care-and-in-healthcare-settings-in-the-context-of-the-novel-coronavirus-(2019-ncov)-outbreak

Click on "Download" and either open the PDF or save it and then open it.

Go to Pages 9 and 10.

There, it says:

b) Number of layers

A minimum of three layers is required for non-medical masks, depending on the fabric used. The innermost layer of the mask is in contact with the wearer’s face. The outermost layer is exposed to the environment.
Fabric cloths (e.g., nylon blends and 100% polyester) when folded into two layers, provides 2-5 times increased filtration efficiency compared to a single layer of the same cloth, and filtration efficiency increases 2-7 times if it is folded into 4 layers. Masks made of cotton handkerchiefs alone should consist of at least 4 layers, but have achieved only 13% filtration efficiency. Very porous materials, such as gauze, even with multiple layers will not provide sufficient filtration; only 3% filtration efficiency.

It is important to note that with more tightly woven materials, as the number of layers increases, the breathability may be reduced. A quick check for breathability may be performed by attempting to breathe, through the mouth, and through the multiple layers.

c) Combination of material used

The ideal combination of material for non-medical masks should include three layers as follows: 1) an innermost layer of a hydrophilic material (e.g. cotton or cotton blends); 2), an outermost layer made of hydrophobic material (e.g., polypropylene, polyester, or their blends) which may limit external contamination from penetration through to the wearer’s nose and mouth; 3) a middle hydrophobic layer of synthetic non-woven material such as polyproplylene or a cotton layer which may enhance filtration or retain droplets.

Also note Table 3. Non-medical mask filtration efficiency, pressure drop and filter quality factor on Page 9 which shows the effectiveness of various household-type fabrics regarding filtration effectiveness.

There are other commonly available materials available which are far more effective than those listed which I'll try to address in a separate reply or OP later if anyone requests it.

Homer shows us how to ward off buses full of deplorables....

&feature=youtu.be

Homer: "Not a bear in sight. The Bear Patrol must be working like a charm."
Lisa: "That's specious reasoning, Dad."
Homer: "Thank you, dear."
Lisa: "By your logic I could claim that this rock keeps tigers away."
Homer: "Oh, how does it work?"
Lisa: "It doesn't work."
Homer: "Uh-huh."
Lisa: "It's just a stupid rock."
Homer: "Uh-huh."
Lisa: "But I don't see any tigers around, do you?"

[Homer thinks of this, then pulls out some money]

Homer: "Lisa, I want to buy your rock."

[Lisa refuses at first, then takes the exchange]

Global report: Bolsonaro hides Brazil's coronavirus death toll and case totals

Source: The Guardian UK

Brazil’s government has stopped publishing a running total of coronavirus deaths and infections in an extraordinary move that critics call an attempt to hide the true toll of the disease.

The move came after months of criticism from experts saying Brazil’s statistics are woefully deficient and in some cases manipulated, meaning it may never be possible to gain a real understanding of the depth of the pandemic in the country.

As the global tally of confirmed cases approached 6.9 million, with nearly 400,000 deaths, Brazil’s last official numbers showed it had recorded more than 34,000 deaths related to the coronavirus, the third-highest number in the world, just ahead of Italy. It reported nearly 615,000 infections, putting it at the second-highest, behind the US. Brazil, with about 210 million people, is the world’s seventh most populous nation.

On Friday the federal health ministry took down a website that had showed daily, weekly and monthly figures on infections and deaths in Brazilian states. On Saturday the site returned but the total numbers of infections for states and the entire country were no longer there. The site was showing only the numbers for the previous 24 hours.

I'm sure tRump would love to do this with American data. Accurate data makes him look very bad. I believe many red states are manipulating their data already. In brief, hiding or manipulating data kills and sickens innocent people.

tRump and Bolsonaro are brothers in arms of wickedness.......

I think this is a result of people who have existed unquestioned.....

in a hard right-wing social and mental authoritarian bubble for years that lose their temper when challenged. We have a very serious mental deformity called right-wing brainwashing in our nation, perhaps afflicting 50-million people to varying degrees. I'm not sure there's a practical cure other than them just dying out.

I do agree that this guy may have a history of bad anger control that's gone untreated. It's bad when a grown man can't hold his temper and let other folks be regardless of his politics. It will be interesting to see what comes out in his trial.

It appeared to me he went into serious rage mode......

The Case for Hope: Glenn Kirschner

This video was a refreshing and frank listen for me. He remind us of our collective failings during Trump's time, yet offers hope for the future - at least with racial injustice and inequality.

The only thing I would have liked to hear him address is the American lack of willingness to fund the many things we desperately need to do and revolutionizing our police forces will require a lot of new tax money - something Republicans refuse to even discuss. A large percentage of our citizens have been brainwashed to be anti-taxers and that mentality must be reversed.

Enjoy!..........
