One elephant in the room John left out is.....

Trump's and the Republican Party's hatred toward our government. That's the main reason many Americans support them. That may not have been within the intent of his article but it is key to this discussion.

Our government is the primary glue to holds our society together, else we fall into anarchy and chaos. Warts and all, our laws and regulations along with our courts protect us from each other's worst impulses and helps us find justice when things go wrong. That includes protections to a degree against the racism and bigotry he mentions.

IMO, those who hold spite toward our system of government in essence support the freedom to commit those worst human impulses. Although Republicans do that primarily because they hate taxes and anything that retards big business' interests, they do it as well as a ruse to energize their base for religious "freedom" (I find a lot of irony in that).

I think most religions would love to be that societal glue mentioned above but that can never work, as religions are worse than political parties on agreeing to anything in unison. Humans will be greedy and power-hungry no matter who's running the show. The best way for us to have a more peaceful society is for all religions to work with government to strengthen and broaden protections provide by our Constitution and statutory laws for all our citizens.

I do however commend John for calling out Trump for his hatred and poor character.......

The real heart breaker with these damned storms is....

that those who can't afford to relocate and those who are too sick or disabled to do so will suffer the most. Keep in mind many will likely be without power for an extended time and perhaps without phone service and/or fresh water.

A very large number of people who live in the low country of NC and SC are in high risk zones for flooding, and many are poor and live in mobile homes or houses with weak construction. I've worked with these folks in years past and they are tough and resilient, but no one can fight a storm this size.

Therefore, lets keep those folks with no voice or political power in our thoughts every day and perhaps support them with appropriate contributions when the time arrives.

Best of luck, Grits and please stay in touch.........

Thanks for sharing those enlightening perspectives.

I agree we should be careful about painting any part of our nation with a broad partisan brush, as that only inflames hatred and divisiveness between cultures, races and populations. And, that's not how we heal this nation after Trump.

If your school is still as open-minded as you described, I suspect this group of rebels will be spoken to - particularly regarding any racially-tinged shouts.

I personally don't think sporting events are the place for making a show of partisan political bias or symbolism. Expressions of racism, sexism, and political dogma violate the principles of good sportsmanship.

Perhaps you can keep your ear to the ground and return later with an update. Also, welcome to DU!....

K&R for truth.

And, we need to make sure that name is attached as a badge of dishonor onto every single Repug that has supported him through this madness.

In two words: Eloquence and Intelligence.

In both he and Michelle. I'm very proud we have them as our standard bearers, along with the Carters and Clintons.

Zero apologies for any of our past Presidents and First Ladies, but instead pride, uplift of spirit, and joy.......

He would be OK as a traffic court judge...

in Mumbai, India.

Never met a Repug that will not justify any means to justify their ends to gain power and money....

Interrogations begin Thursday morning...

in the White House basement.

Will there be a two-way mirror and video?

America drank the education complacency Kool-Aid for far too long.

Meanwhile, the overall need for skilled workers declined as manufacturing plants were sent abroad, automation and overseas outsourcing will gradually consume the rest, and computerization allows us to slowly dumb-down (hello Siri, what's my name?).

To add to our demise, Republican's core belief that the individual is supreme is slowly creating an "every man is an island" mindset where anything associated with "community" is evil - including public education.

Bottom line: It's very hard to divide and conquer a well-educated, secular public that thinks for themselves.

We're nearing the end of a golden era and heady cultural cycle.....

well, maybe better to call it silver or bronze era.....

I believe the Great Depression and WW2 instilled a state of humility and contentment (with little or no fear) in the American public that lasted for decades but as they say, all good things must come to an end. Some cultural experts say that so long as we are prosperous and content, we keep the worst aspects of our primitive natures concealed and only when we are consumed by fear and ignorance will those evil impulses erupt to the surface.

I remember in the 60s, the only thing we heard from the few Republicans I knew of in my area of the South (and Bob Dole on TV) was their deep, bitter resentment of progressive taxation. Apparently a bunch of the richest and most psychopathic ones got together in the clubhouse and decided to pour vast sums into changing that tax formula. To succeed, that effort required destruction of our contentment by instilling fear, resentment, racism and division into the public.

Those efforts have vastly exceeded their wildest dreams......

If all else fails, a nation-wide strike would stop him.

As you suggested if Trump completely compromises our system of justice, he may can be stopped....
* IF our major media outlets really speak out, or
* IF a large group of corporate bigwigs spoke out strongly, or
* IF Congress grew a spine and shut him down, then he may get checked.

Otherwise, the American public will have to leverage its ultimate weapon: shutdown consumerism temporarily until Wall Street squeals like a stuck pig.

Trump, Congress, and Wall Street would all just go to their knees.

Sadly, neither American citizens, media moguls, corporate officers or politicians have the will to do any of that.....
