Controversial programme allows access to military gear including armoured vehicles, helicopters and grenade launchers

Barack Obama restricted the controversial programme in 2015 following criticism that police forces had been too heavy handed in their response to the Ferguson protests, triggered by the killing of Michael Brown.

But Trump signed an executive order reversing the restrictions in 2017. According to the latest Department of Defense figures, police forces across the country now hold about $1.8bn worth of gear.

A 2017 study found that the receipt of military equipment by law enforcement agencies leads to an increase in the number of civilians killed by their officers.

When controlling for other variables, counties with the highest amount of military equipment received were found to record more than twice the number of police killings than those that received no equipment.

The article includes charts and stats clearly pointing out how this has not only increased shootings and killings but also also changed the mentality of our police to be much more aggressive and violent in dealing with citizens.

The main point for me is the fact that these equipment transfers and funding programs in part were for preventing terrorism but in reality they are terrorizing the general public.

Best protest sign yet?

Headline News:
In a completely unexpected move, today Donald Trump stood before a D.C. church waving a Biden for President campaign sign. Asked about his motive, he said: "I'm totally exhausted from all the winning and the White House bunker smells of lavender. Vice President Pence and I are resigning immediately and handing over the keys to the people's house to Mr. Biden as soon as we clear the frig of Big Macs".

Civil liberties groups sue Trump, Barr for forcefully removing Lafayette Square protesters

Source: Washington Post

The American Civil Liberties Union and Black Lives Matter on Thursday accused President Trump and his administration of authorizing an “unprovoked and frankly criminal attack” on demonstrators to enable a photo op of the president holding a Bible in front of the historic St. John’s Episcopal Church.

In a federal lawsuit, the groups asserted that U.S. and military police officers’ use of horses, batons, shields and riot control agents — including pepper spray, smoke canisters and rubber or plastic projectiles — violated largely peaceful protesters’ constitutional rights of free speech and assembly 30 minutes before a citywide curfew took effect Monday.

The suit — which also names Attorney General William P. Barr as a defendant — was brought by the ACLU of the District of Columbia, the Washington Lawyers’ Committee and the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. All plaintiffs said they were gathered peacefully to protest the death in police custody of George Floyd in Minneapolis and other similar deaths.

“We won’t be silenced by tear gas and rubber bullets,” said April Goggans, core organizer of Black Lives Matter D.C., the lead plaintiff in the case. “What happened to our members Monday evening, here in the nation’s capital, was an affront to all our rights.” ACLU officials called the lawsuit the first of many it intends to file in response to violence by police against protesters and journalists in demonstrations that have erupted in all 50 states, saying the attorney general has become complicit in attacks on First Amendment rights.

Possible helpful idea for valid George Floyd peaceful protests.

What if protest leaders declared all valid protesters should not wear hoodies or carry backpacks? Just get everyone to agree that anyone seen with a hoodie pulled up or carrying a backpack does not belong to a valid Floyd protest. Very few regular protesters I've seen in the news are wearing hoodies or covering themselves completely in black.

Those little RW white punks stirring up shit by breaking out windows had all their skin covered in black with hoodies, masks and gloves and backpacks to carry their tools of destruction.

* Stripped of the hoodies, protesters could at least have some details to share with authorities and....
* Not allowing backpacks would minimize concealment of larger tools that makes it easy to break glass and doors.

I felt a surge of pride at last yesterday when I saw videos of several instances where valid democratic protesters were calling out and running off these thugs who want to discredit and distract from a valid expression of American patriotism in the form of a peaceful protest.

I just feel the good guys somehow need to make themselves distinctive from the bad guys.

NYPD's Terrorism Official Says Unnamed Groups Planned Protest Violence in Advance

NYPD’s Terrorism Official Says Unnamed Groups Planned Protest Violence in Advance

New York's top terrorism official says there's evidence that members of anarchist groups from outside the city intentionally planned to incite violence at protests calling for justice in the death of George Floyd. Deputy Commissioner for Intelligence and Counterterrorism John Miller said there is a high level of confidence within the NYPD that these unnamed groups had organized scouts, medics, and supply routes of rocks, bottles and accelerants for breakaway groups to commit vandalism and violence. There are strong indicators they planned for violence in advance using at times encrypted communications, he said.

One out of every seven arrests, of 686 so far since May 28, has been people from out of state, according to Miller. He said those arrested came from Massachusettes, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Iowa, Nevada, Virginia, Maryland, Texas and St. Paul, Minnesota.

"Before the protests began, organizers of certain anarchists groups set out to raise bail money and people who would be responsible to be raising bail money, they set out to recruit medics and medical teams with gear to deploy in anticipation of violent interactions with police," Miller said. He added, "They prepared to commit property damage and directed people who were following them that this should be done selectively and only in wealthier areas or at high-end stores run by corporate entities."

Without specifying who "they" are, Miller said the agitators "developed a complex network of bicycle scouts to move ahead of demonstrators in different directions of where police were and where police were not for purposes of being able to direct groups from the larger group to places where they could commit acts of vandalism including the torching of police vehicles and Molotov cocktails where they thought officers would not be."

This is pure raw fascist right-wing evil and these people are destroying American's right to peaceful protest. It represents a further advancement of our nation toward being an all-out fascist plutocracy.
