The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are the cover stars of Time magazine’s list of the most influential people in the world, with the accolade revealed on the duke’s 37th birthday.

The US publication released a glossy image of Harry and Meghan, taken at their Montecito home in California. Jose Andres, a friend and chef who runs the charity World Central Kitchen, writes that the couple are “driven” and “compassionate”, and give a “voice to the voiceless”.

“Springing into action is not the easy choice for a young duke and duchess who have been blessed through birth and talent, and burned by fame. It would be much safer to enjoy their good fortune and stay silent,” Andres writes. He adds: “They run towards the struggle.”

Writing that they were “humbled” to be part of Time’s annual top 100 list on their Archewell foundation website, the couple also contributed to the list, honouring the economist Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the first African and first woman to lead the World Trade Organization. “What will it take to vaccinate the world? Unity, cooperation – and leaders like Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala,” they wrote.

I wish the couple well in America and thank them for their charity work. I thought this was a stunningly beautiful photo of Meghan.

Restoring grid power to New Orleans may take months.

Transmission tower collapse in Avondale; will take four days to assess damage
Aug 30, 2021
WWLTV

Getting the power back on is proving to be a difficult task, with a collapse in Avondale.

Excellent nutshell review of the failure of all eight feeder points from the regional grid to New Orleans and all points south and about potential temporary measures to create an isolated system for critical services.

This video covers just one of those eight feeder points. As the YouTube headline stated, it will require at least four days just for a damage assessment.

This suggests the city will essentially be shut down for many weeks and this affects refineries, other chemical plants and offshore petrochemical services along with the seafood industry south of the city.

Vice President Kamala Harris begins Southeast Asia tour

Aug 22, 2021
CBS News

Vice President Kamala Harris kicked off her trip to Southeast Asia on Sunday. The tour is seen as an effort to counter China's influence in the region, but comes amid the U.S.'s chaotic exit from Afghanistan. CBSN contributor Isaac Stone Fish joins Lana Zak to discuss the importance of Harris' trip.

I feel our Vice President does not get the public exposure and recognition she deserves. Perhaps this trip will help.

Massive, powerful earthquake storm near South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands

See: https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/?currentFeatureId=us6000f4mr&extent=-66.96448,-406.58203&extent=-48.40003,-364.39453&listOnlyShown=true&baseLayer=terrain

I scan the USGS earthquake page each day a part of my weather review and in the years I've been observing, never seen a swarm this powerful and sustained. Would not want to be existing in that area and shudder to think what this would do in a highly populated zone.

From Wikipedia:

South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (SGSSI) is a British Overseas Territory in the southern Atlantic Ocean. It is a remote and inhospitable collection of islands, consisting of South Georgia Island and a chain of smaller islands known as the South Sandwich Islands. South Georgia is 165 kilometres (103 mi) long and 35 kilometres (22 mi) wide and is by far the largest island in the territory. The South Sandwich Islands lie about 700 kilometres (430 mi) southeast of South Georgia. The territory's total land area is 3,903 km2 (1,507 sq mi). The Falkland Islands are about 1,300 kilometres (810 mi) west from its nearest point.

No permanent native population lives in the South Sandwich Islands, and a very small non-permanent population resides on South Georgia. There are no scheduled passenger flights or ferries to or from the territory, although visits by cruise liners to South Georgia are increasingly popular, with several thousand visitors each summer.

More on that Schmidt Ocean Institute expedition....

SCIENTISTS EXPLORE SEAMOUNTS IN PHOENIX ISLANDS ARCHIPELAGO, GAINING NEW INSIGHTS INTO DEEP WATER DIVERSITY AND ECOLOGY

Building off a groundbreaking 2017 expedition, a follow-up expedition in the Phoenix Islands Archipelago enabled the largest collection of microbial cultures from the central Pacific Ocean and the most comprehensive study of deep sea coral and sponge ecosystems in this part of the world.

HONOLULU – Marine scientists aboard Schmidt Ocean Institute’s research vessel Falkor have identified likely new marine species and deep-sea organisms on nine seamounts that were explored for the first time in the remote Phoenix Islands Archipelago. In a 34-day expedition that ended today, scientists also conducted high-resolution seafloor mapping of more than 30,000 square kilometers and video exploration of five additional seamounts.
----
During the expedition, scientists made two rare sightings of a glass octopus, a nearly transparent species whose only visible features are its optic nerve, eyeballs and digestive tract. Before this expedition, there has been limited live footage of the glass octopus, forcing scientists to learn about the animal by studying specimens found in the gut contents of predators.

Schmidt Ocean Institute’s underwater robot SuBastian also captured footage for the first time of a rare whale shark, a deep-water species that dates back millions of years and whose name comes from its length of more than 40 feet. During the expedition, scientists also noted unique marine behaviors, including crab stealing fish from one another.

WASHINGTON (AP) — As it has been for nearly 16 months, longer than any time in the nation’s history, the U.S. Capitol is closed to most public visitors.

The one-two punch of the coronavirus pandemic that shuttered the Capitol’s doors in the spring of 2020 and the deadly insurrection by then-President Donald Trump’s supporters on Jan. 6 has left the icon of American democracy unopen to all but a select few.
----------
A senior Democratic aide, who was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity, said tours have not resumed for both pandemic and security reasons. The House and Senate Sergeants-at-Arms are continually reviewing the situation in consultation with Office of Attending Physician, the aide said.

The Capitol complex is open to official business visitors with limits on the numbers allowed. Most are asked to sign in and provide background information. “The Capitol has now being closed for the longest stretch in its 228 years history,” said Campbell of the historical society.

Vlad Putin and other fascist plutocrats are quite happy with America's divisiveness and isolationism. We need to tear their walls down.

The laws were passed during the 2021 General Assembly. Topics range from early voting to what is considered "professional wrongdoing" by a police officer.

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Starting June 29, more than 20 new laws go into effect in Kentucky. These laws, passed by the House and Senate during this year's General Assembly, cover everything from how Kentuckians vote to what is considered a "Kentucky-grown agricultural product."

Two laws, making changes to education and elections, grabbed particular attention during the session. After COVID-19 upended the 2020 election cycle, House Bill 574 cements three days of early in person voting before election day.

Many of these are right-wing dream laws shoved through by our Rethug-dominated legislature. Some were vetoed by Gov. Beshear, then overridden by lawmakers.
