The tentative deal, announced Monday evening by congressional negotiators, would provide only a fraction of the $5.7 billion President Trump was seeking for 200 miles of a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. It would instead provide $1.375 billion for 55 miles of new border fences.

“I can’t say I’m happy. I can’t say I’m thrilled,” Trump said of the deal.

Unless a border deal is signed into law, the government will enter another partial shutdown on Saturday.

Elkhart Indiana getting new voting machines with paper trails.

GOSHEN — New voting machines for every precinct in Elkhart County could be delivered as soon as next week, the Elkhart County Commissioners learned Monday.

The commissioners passed a resolution supporting the purchase of 300 vote tabulators from Election Systems and Software, which the Elkhart County Election board approved at a recent meeting of its own. The Elkhart County Council expressed support for the $1.7 million purchase Saturday, after hearing that there could be a “cash discount” if the county could provide all the money upfront.

The hybrid touchscreen and paper system will meet new state standards expected in the coming years, which would mandate having a paper trail to make hand recounts possible, according to Clerk of the Circuit Court Chris Anderson. He said he wants to have the new machines in place before May so the county can use them in the primary and general elections this year and know what to expect in time for the 2020 presidential election.

I was unaware that it's likely Indiana will pass measures sometime soon that mandate voting machines have a paper trail.

First on CNN: Hundreds of TSA screeners, working without pay, calling out sick at major airports

Washington (CNN)Hundreds of Transportation Security Administration officers, who are required to work without paychecks through the partial government shutdown, have called out from work this week from at least four major airports, according to two senior agency officials and three TSA employee union officials.

The mass call outs could inevitably mean air travel is less secure, especially as the shutdown enters its second week with no clear end to the political stalemate in sight.

"This will definitely affect the flying public who we (are) sworn to protect," Hydrick Thomas, president of the national TSA employee union, told CNN.

At New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, as many as 170 TSA employees have called out each day this week, Thomas tells CNN. Officers from a morning shift were required to work extra hours to cover the gaps.

Could be that it's almost Christmas and people are doing other things. Or, as I tend to believe, everyone who was really enthusiastic about the wall donated right away because they were excited. Now that they're done, there's nobody left and it's drying up.

Democrats will hold 12 debates for the 2020 presidential contest

WASHINGTON — The Democratic National Committee announced on Thursday that it will sanction 12 upcoming presidential primary debates, with the first ones taking place in June and July of 2019, DNC Chairman Tom Perez said on a conference call with reporters.

Six of the debates will take place in 2019, Perez said, while the other six will be held in 2020, with the final one occurring in April of 2020. Perez announced that none of the states with the first nominating contests — Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina — would host a debate until the 2020 calendar year.

Given the potential size of the Democratic field, Perez said the DNC would split the debates into separate events on back-to-back nights, with participation on a particular evening determined by a random selection open to the public.

That’s in contrast to the early Republican presidential debates in 2016, when the GOP held an undercard debate on the same day before the primetime debate featuring the major candidates.
