Calling from the Vatican in Rome, Pope Francis spoke with Italian astronaut Paolo Nespoli of the European Space Agency along with three NASA astronauts and two Russian cosmonauts.
"Your little glass palace in totality is greater than the sum of its parts, and this is the example that you give us," Francis said through a translator.
Francis skipped the small talk and dove straight into the big questions. "As you're contemplating the undoubted limits of the universe, it makes us think about where we come from and where we're going," he said. "In light of your experiences in space, what are your thoughts regarding the place of man in the universe?"
"Holy Father, this is a complex question," Nespoli replied in Italian as NASA TV provided an English translation. "I feel like a technical person — an engineer — and I'm here among experiments, machinery and equipment. When we speak of these much more internal questions of where we come from, I remain rather perplexed. I think that our objective here is that of knowing our being and to fill our knowledge to understand what's around us," he said. "But on the other hand, an interesting thing is that the more we know, the more we realize how little we know."

Lisa Bloom Reportedly Worked to Discredit Rose McGowan With Files on Her Sexual History

An exposé by The Daily Beast‘s Lloyd Grove details how Lisa Bloom — a lawyer famous for her defense of sexual harassment victims — reportedly attempted to discredit Rose McGowan’s allegations against Harvey Weinstein with “files on her and her sexual history.”
The report details a conversation between journalist Ronan Farrow — who helped break open the Weinstein scandal with his New Yorker piece — in which Bloom said, “I don’t know if you’ve talked to Rose McGowan, but we have files on her and her sexual history.” Farrow was reportedly “stunned and disgusted” by the supposed feminist’s threat against the actress.
McGowan — who had been speaking to Farrow for his report — has since publicly accused the Hollywood producer of raping her at the 1997 Sundance Film Festival.
The deeply reported Daily Beast story goes on to detail the ways in which Weinstein and his legal team aggressively sought to shut down Farrow’s exposé, first when he pitched it to NBC News, and later when he was writing it for the New Yorker.

U.S. scientists unveil powerful new tools to fix genetic faults

U.S. scientists on Wednesday unveiled two new molecular editing tools designed to fix mutations that cause the majority of human genetic diseases, some of which have no known treatment.
One technique, by David Liu of Harvard University and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, offers a highly precise way to fix single-letter mistakes in genes, which are stretches of deoxyribonucleic acid or DNA.
A second, by Broad Institute molecular biologist Feng Zhang, focuses on editing ribonucleic acid or RNA, which carries the genetic instructions to make proteins, without altering DNA.
Both techniques build off of the game-changing CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing tool, a type of molecular scissors for trimming unwanted parts of the human genome to replace with new stretches of DNA. The genome consists of six billion DNA letters, or chemical bases.

This jaw-slackening revelation opens the second half of Frontline’s two-part documentary “Putin’s Revenge,” debuting on PBS member stations on two consecutive Wednesdays, Oct. 25 and Nov. 1, at 10 p.m. Two letters shifted the momentum of an acrimonious presidential election campaign cycle that seemed to favor Hillary Clinton’s victory toward Donald Trump, reality star.
They spell out the difference between “legitimate” and “illegitimate,” and refer to a phishing attempt to hack into Clinton’s campaign chairman John Podesta. In the Frontline piece, Podesta explains that one of his assistants with access to his email account checked with a security specialist regarding the upswing in notifications, purportedly from Google, to change his password.
The security person allegedly meant to type the word “illegitimate” in his response: “This is a legitimate email. John needs to change his password immediately and ensure that two-factor authentication is turned on his account.”
Confused, Podesta clicked on the deceptive link, allowing hackers to access more than 60,000 e-mails.

NAACP warns black passengers against flying American Airlines

Following "a pattern of disturbing incidents," The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) announced a travel advisory warning travelers, African-Americans in particular, about flying with American Airlines.
"The NAACP for several months now has been monitoring a pattern of disturbing incidents reported by African-American passengers, specific to American Airlines," the advocacy group announced on Tuesday.
"In light of these confrontations, we have today taken the action of issuing national advisory alerting travelers — especially African Americans — to exercise caution, in that booking and boarding flights on American Airlines could subject them disrespectful, discriminatory or unsafe conditions."
It's not the first time the NAACP has issued a travel advisory. In August, the organization's Missouri chapter warned people of color, members of the LGBT community, women and those with disabilities to "travel with extreme caution" throughout the entire state because "they may not be safe," as Salon previously reported.

Xi's grip on China tightens with new term and no heir in sight

Xi, 64, secured a second five-year term as general secretary of the Communist Party after his eponymous political theory was enshrined in its constitution, giving him an inviolable mandate to rule and possibly positioning him to retain power for much longer.
He was also reappointed head of the country's Central Military Commission.
Premier Li Keqiang, 62, retained his seat on the seven-member committee while five other men -- all little known outside China -- replaced comrades who had reached an informal retirement age of 68.
In a speech, as the other members stood expressionless in dark suits, Xi heralded a "new era" for the country under his rule and said the party "must get a new look and more importantly make new accomplishments."
