Beto O'Rourke: Biden 'really failing us' on the border, asylum

Former Democratic Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke rebuked President Biden’s handling of asylum policy, saying the administration’s actions are not living up to his 2020 campaign promises.

O’Rourke told a panel convened Thursday by the Harvard Kennedy School’s Institute of Politics that he was inspired by Biden’s 2020 messaging in contrast with the Trump administration’s border policies.

“When Joe Biden was running in 2020, he ran with such incredible moral clarity on this issue: ‘We will no longer put kids in cages because they’re not animals, we will no longer tear babies from the breasts of their mothers,’ literally what Trump was doing in his family separation policy,” O’Rourke said.

“‘We’re going to restore the soul of America, and we’re going to live up to our promise.’ Man, that was inspiring to me. I needed to hear that, living on the border and as someone who really cares about that."

Republican leads over Democrat whose House of Delegates race became embroiled in sex scandal

Source: Associated Press

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Republican David Owen held a narrow lead over Democrat Susanna Gibson in a Virginia House of Delegates race that drew attention after revelations that Gibson engaged in sex acts with her husband on a pornographic website, but the margin left the race too early to call.

Gibson ran against Owen in one of the state’s most competitive districts after all 100 seats in the House of Delegates were redrawn to conform with the 2020 Census.

Many political scientists wrote off Gibson’s chances after news outlets reported in September about her participation in livestreamed sex, which included soliciting payments from viewers in exchange for specific acts.

But Gibson, a nurse practitioner, refused to withdraw from the race, and accused Republicans of dirty politics for exposing her conduct. She largely ignored the allegations and focused on abortion rights, which Democrats said could be in jeopardy if Republicans gained control of the Legislature. Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin has been seeking a ban on abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, with exceptions in cases of rape, incest, or when the mother’s life is in danger.

Presley Concedes to Reeves in Mississippi Governor's Race

Source: NY Times

Gov. Tate Reeves of Mississippi appeared to secure a second term, fending off a vigorous challenge from Brandon Presley, a moderate Democrat whom he cast as a far-left acolyte of President Biden, and overcoming concerns about a shortage of excitement among conservatives.

Mr. Presley conceded to Mr. Reeves shortly before 11 p.m. Central time.

While the outcome was no surprise, given the Republican Party’s dominance in the state, it did not come quite as easily as some might have expected at the outset of the race. Mr. Presley, a little-known utilities regulator, mounted an energetic campaign that kept Mr. Reeves on his toes.

Mr. Reeves, who was first elected governor in 2019, campaigned on his conservative credentials while constantly linking Mr. Presley to Mr. Biden and other national Democrats who are widely unpopular in Mississippi.

House passes resolution to censure Tlaib over Israel comments

Source: CNN

The House passed a GOP-led resolution on Tuesday to censure Rep. Rashida Tlaib over comments critical of Israel and in support of Palestinians amid Israel's war against Hamas.

The move amounts to a rare and significant rebuke of the Michigan Democrat, who is the first Palestinian-American woman to serve in Congress.

The resolution, which was introduced by Georgia GOP Rep. Rich McCormick, advanced earlier in the day after a Democratic-led effort to block the measure failed.

Tlaib has defended herself against the censure attempts, arguing that they are an effort to silence her and saying that her "colleagues have resorted to distorting my positions in resolutions filled with obvious lies."

White House pushes back on Tlaib suggesting Biden supporting 'genocide'

Source: The Hill

The White House is pushing back against Rep. Rashida Tlaib’s (D-Mich.) claim that President Biden is supporting the “genocide” against Palestinians amid the ongoing war between Israel and the militant group Hamas.

During an appearance on ABC’s “This Week,” anchor George Stephanopoulos asked White House deputy national security adviser Jon Finer about the recent comments Tliab made about the ongoing conflict.

“Look, we strongly disagree with some of that messaging and with some of the terms used to describe this conflict,” Finer told Stephanopoulos on Sunday.

“But what I will say is we know that this is a conflict about which there are strong views on all sides, including in the United States, including frankly, even within the United States — the Biden administration about the conduct of this conflict.”

Biden offers over a dozen endorsements in Virginia days before election

President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris announced nearly two dozen endorsements for Virginia legislature seats on Saturday, just days before the state is set to vote in critical elections.

Every seat of the Virginia legislature is up for grabs in 2023, with Democrats hoping to hold onto their tight state Senate margin and Republicans aiming to keep the state House.

Biden and Harris announced a slate of 23 endorsements for swing-district Democrats.

“With so much on the line this year, we can’t afford to let this important election pass us by. So much hangs in the balance — not just for Virginia but for the direction of this country,” Biden and Harris said in a statement. “While our party continues to show steady leadership in Washington, these candidates are stepping up and campaigning in their communities for a brighter future for Virginia.”

Axelrod suggests Biden drop out of 2024 presidential race

Source: The Hill

Former President Obama’s senior adviser David Axelrod on Sunday suggested President Biden drop out of the 2024 presidential race in the wake of a new poll showing the incumbent trailing former President Trump.

Pointing to a New York Times and Siena College poll published Sunday, Axelrod wrote on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter: “It’s very late to change horses; a lot will happen in the next year that no one can predict & Biden’s team says his resolve to run is firm.”

Arguing Biden is “justly proud of his accomplishments,” Axelrod said Biden’s poll numbers will “send tremors of doubt” through the Democratic Party.

“Not ‘bed-wetting,'” but legitimate concern, Axelrod wrote.
