Menendez's Senate Replacement Has Been a Democrat for Just 5 Months
Source: NY Times
When George Helmy is sworn in next month as Robert Menendez's temporary replacement in the Senate, he will be joining a chamber where Democrats hold a razor-thin majority, outnumbering Republicans by a single seat, 50 to 49.
Mr. Helmy was selected last week by Gov. Philip D. Murphy of New Jersey, a Democrat, to fill a seat held for three terms by Mr. Menendez, who, before being convicted of trading his political influence for bribes of cash, gold and a Mercedes, was widely viewed as one of the country's most powerful Democrats.
Mr. Helmy, however, is new to the Democratic Party.
He registered as a Democrat in March, six days before the candidate he was supporting in the Democratic Senate primary, Tammy Murphy, New Jersey's first lady, dropped out of the race, according to Board of Elections records in Morris County, N.J. Before then, he was registered as an independent -- or "unaffiliated" -- voter.

Louisiana governor tells parents against Ten Commandments in classrooms: 'Tell your child not to look'
Source: NBC News
Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry has a suggestion for parents who don't believe the Ten Commandments should be displayed in public school classrooms throughout the state.
"Tell your child not to look at them," he told reporters Monday.
The Republican governor defended the controversial legislation during a news conference announcing how Louisiana intends to fend off a lawsuit that argues that it is unconstitutional to hang the Ten Commandments in state-funded school and college classrooms.
Landry first signed the GOP-backed legislation in June, making Louisiana the first state in the nation to require schools to exhibit posters of the religious text, which was revealed to Moses in the Bible and remains revered by followers of the Christian faith.

Dow plunges nearly 1,000 points after report shows sharp drop in U.S. hiring
Source: CBS News
Stocks tumbled Friday after new government data showed a steep decline in hiring in July, spurring concerns that economic activity is slowing faster than economists expected.
Two hours into the session, the blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 984 points, or 2.4%, to 39,415. The broader S&P 500 sank 2.5%, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite lost nearly 3%, fueled by disappointing quarterly earnings from bellwethers such as Amazon and Intel.
Market analyst Adam Crisafulli of Vital Knowledge said the weak employment numbers will heighten fears the economy is losing steam. "This labor report fell short on pretty much every single metric," he said in a note to investors.
Although stocks have hit record highs this year, propelled in part by excitement over artificial intelligence companies, investors have pulled back in recent weeks. Some analysts think the Federal Reserve has waited too long to lower interest rates, raising the risk of a hard landing for the economy, or even a recession.

Kari Lake wins primary, teeing up Arizona Senate showdown with Gallego
Source: The Hill
Republican Kari Lake easily glided to victory in the Arizona Senate GOP primary, according to a projection from Decision Desk HQ, teeing up a marquee showdown between her and Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego.
Lake was largely seen as the presumptive GOP nominee in the Republican contest to replace retiring Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-Ariz.), as her only real contender was Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb. Gallego ran uncontested in the Democratic contest.
Lake, also a former local news anchor, has repeatedly refuted the election loss despite multiple court challenges getting tossed. The firebrand conservative has sought to court skeptics and moderate Republicans she isolated last cycle, with limited success.
Gallego, meanwhile, has sought to eschew his progressive bonafides, including having his membership expire with the Congressional Progressive Caucus.
