Elizabeth Warren jumps to second place

U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren is continuing her upward momentum, jumping into the second-place slot in the latest poll from The Economist/YouGov.

The question, “If the Democratic presidential primary or caucus in your state were held today, who would you vote for?” was asked of those who said they planned to vote in the primaries.

Former Vice President Joe Biden is still in first place, but now at 26%, down one point.

Senator Elizabeth Warren takes second place, with 16%, up five points.

Senator Bernie Sanders drops to third place with 12%, down four points.

What compelled you to join DU and why do you stay?

Some people join and stay just a minute; some of us hang out here far too much to be healthy!

We have quite a community here. Very diverse. Very talented at writing and photography. Rather opinionated *cough* when it comes to politics.

I joined when I was looking for a new site to post and write on when the site I had been on for a decade went dark. I had lurked for a long time, visiting to get inspiration and occasionally steal ideas for posts on my previous site! Hehehe. I knew that when the site I lived at shut this is where I hoped to make my online home. I joined, I stuttered and then I got my confidence in my new home. I stay because I love it! I love the debate and the thought-provoking commentary, the funny posts and the serious wonk posts. I love the fact that as a nerd I fit right in . I love the fact that it a constant in a very rocky real world. I am rather an addict and I don’t care!

So why did you join? More importantly, why do you stay?

What Experiences Have Shaped Your Religious Belief Systems Or Lack Thereof?

I think it interesting that for every person who decides to follow the ideological standpoint of their adult influences growing up, there is another of us who will look left, look right, and run for the hills as fast as we possibly can. I grew up in and as a child of very religious, very strict fundamentalist fellowship known as the The Gospel Hall Brethren. It is a small and little known strict literal and legalistic interpretation of the New Testament Protestant Denomination that boasts about 40,000 members world-wide. Baptism by immersion when you come to an age of understanding (never did, get Baptised that is), sitting at the back of the meeting hall and segregated from the rest of the congregation if you were not in fellowship (always at the back), no trousers, no make-up, no movies, no friends outside the meeting. Marry young, no divorce, no gays, no Christmas if it landed on a Sunday, meetings 3 times on Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and youth fellowship on a Friday.

Please, do not get me wrong, my parents love me. Within the context above I had a happy childhood. My mother and I have a very close relationship (my father died a few years ago) but it took time to get here. I do not and never will understand religion as an exclusionary belief system. I am right so everyone else must be wrong. I am certain that faith cannot ever be precluded on the assumption that for one to go to heaven, based on one’s faith, others de facto must go to hell.

My experiences growing up in a very strict religious and politically right-wing family shaped my political and religious leanings as an adult. I grew up determined that everyone deserves justice and fairness, not just those that sat in front of me at the meeting hall (don’t forget I was at the back, I was excluded). I wanted to be part of a community that was inclusive not exclusive. I didn’t want to be part of a club where everyone thought they were set apart and better than anyone who didn't believe exactly like them. Hence the emergence of Soph the liberal as a teen and nothing I have learnt in the meantime has stopped my never-ending desire for equality and fairness for all.

Even as progressives, we are of all different stripes here on DU, somethings matter more than others to each of us within our progressive framework. Some views will have been formed from parents, from life experiences or from just observing the political and religious landscape. Others will have changed over the years going from left to far left to centre left or vice versa. Maybe we started out right and then found the light😊 What has shaped your experience?

ACLU Sues Trump Administration for Totally Distorting the Concept of 'Discrimination'

The ACLU and several other advocacy groups filed a lawsuit against the Trump Administration on Tuesday over a new policy that allows healthcare workers to deny patients information and treatment based on personal religious or moral beliefs.

The underlying issues in play draw on the ongoing national debate over whether “religious freedom” allows a person to avoid what would otherwise be a legal obligation on the basis that following the law would offend their religious beliefs.

In a statement on its website, the ACLU stated that it took up this fight because Trump’s new rule is seriously dangerous in that, “It forces health centers that receive federal funds to employ individuals who refuse to perform essential job functions, without any regard for the wellbeing of their patients or public safety.” The rule, officially titled “Protecting Statutory Conscience Rights in Health Care,” was first announced by President Donald Trump in a Rose Garden press conference last May, on the National Day of Prayer. It is set to take effect July 22.

Woolly severed head of a giant Ice Age wolf - nearly TWICE the size of its modern-day descendants...

... - is found preserved in permafrost in Siberia after 40,000 years

Scientists have unveiled the severed head of a huge Ice Age wolf baring its teeth, which dates back more than 40,000 years.

The snarling beast with its brain intact was found preserved in permafrost in the Yakutia region on Siberia.

The head is almost 16 inches long, nearly twice the size of the head of its modern-day descendant, the Gray wolf, at 9.1-11 inches.

It was discovered above the Arctic Circle by local man Pavel Efimov in summer 2018 near the remote Tirekhtyakh River but the find was only now revealed.

Protesters plot to ruin Trump's big July 4 address with infamous 'Baby Trump' blimp

Anti-war activists Code Pink have a plan to ruin President Donald Trump’s planned Lincoln Memorial address this July 4th.

The Washington Post reports that Code Pink has requested a protest permit from the National Park Service so they can demonstrate against the president — and they’re planning on bringing the infamous “Baby Trump” blimp with them.

The blimp, which first gained notoriety when it was deployed during anti-Trump protests in the United Kingdom, depicts an angry caricature of Trump wearing nothing but a diaper.

“Code Pink organizers said the decision to import the blimp originated around the time Trump announced he would hold a military parade in Washington last year,” the Post reports. “The parade was canceled amid questions about its impact and cost — estimates indicated it could be as much as $92 million — but through online fundraising efforts, Code Pink raised enough money to bring ‘Baby Trump’ to the District.”
