Supreme Court gives Trump go-ahead on border wall
The Justice Department had asked the justices to stay a pair of rulings an Oakland-based federal judge issued in May and June blocking Trump’s plan to use about $2.5 billion in unspent military funds for wall projects in California, Arizona and New Mexico.
All the Republican-appointed justices voted in favor of allowing Trump to proceed with that aspect of his plan while litigation over the issue continues. All the Democratic-appointed justices dissented, except for Justice Stephen Breyer who said he would have allowed the contracting process to move forward but blocked actual construction.

This is an attempted overthrow of representative determination. It is an outrage...
Brexit and Trump are but two examples of the textbook smokescreen behind which we are witness to a transfer from democracy to an absence of democracy within the West. Those behind it are actively working to undermine our democratic customs and cede this displaced rule and authority into the hands of those who sit outside democratic norms and behaviours.
This is an attempted overthrow of representative determination. It is an outrage, and it still might work.
Look at the evidence: We have a quickening right-wing rampage to annihilate the tattered remains of safety nets for the vulnerable; any sense of community accountability; and, the conservation of mother earth.
All this bollocks about ‘MAGA’ and ‘energising' Britain, basically denotes a co-ordinated strategy of ‘let’s take advantage of the idiots while we can’ approach to governance. We are seeing an almost daily acceleration of this tactic. They must, otherwise they potentially run the risk of not completely disabling our democracies and therefore the danger for them of not being able to cash-in on the con grows.
It has been a long con. Over a number of decades. And we need united opposition to this with preservation of democracy as our urgent priority. Impeachment? A General Election? Both would be a start I think..

Active-duty U.S. troops are now stationed inside the Border Patrol's holding facility in Donna, Texas, and monitoring migrant adults and children from just a few feet away, according to two current and two former defense officials, a move a congressman says comes close to violating a 140-year-old federal law.
Despite past assurances from federal officials that the active-duty U.S. troops deployed to the border would not be in direct contact with migrants or be used for law enforcement, the service members stand watch among the migrants. The troops are perched on raised platforms throughout a large room where the migrants are held, according to the four officials.
The troops were assigned to the facility to provide welfare checks on the migrants, but the officials say that has evolved into a continual presence watching over them.

“Now there is this Office of Legal Counsel opinion that is being talked about, that Mueller is talking about, that’s a federal opinion. That’s about federal prosecutions, but in our constitutional system, we also have a separate set of prosecutors, state prosecutors, and they aren’t bound in any way, shape, or form by the office of legal opinion,” he explained.
There are currently 27 Democratic Party state attorneys general.
“Now, I expect the president, were he indicted by a state prosecutor, to make the same kinds of arguments that he’s been making all along, ‘he’s immune, he’s the king’ and so on and I think that those arguments will get somewhere when it comes to the trial of a sitting president, but I don’t think it’s going to get to the indictment part. That is, I think that the best arguments, in terms of constitutional law, say you can indict a sitting president at the state level,” he explained.
“You may not be able to try them — for I think important reasons like 1861 I don’t think you’d want South Carolina to be able to force Abraham Lincoln and haul him in to court to face a criminal trial, because after all, he has the nation’s business to attend to and a war to prosecute — but I think the indictment could happen and so I suspect if there are state charges that are viable, that those can and will be brought against the president,” Katyal concluded.
