The fascist movement at the centre of Italy's culture war

The media have often fallen for a narrative that suggests Italy is undergoing a fascist revival as far-right forces sweep across Europe. In the run-up to Italy’s March 2018 general election, the Guardian wrote that CasaPound had “brought Mussolini back to the mainstream” and a Channel 4 documentary flattered the group’s rhetoric of “filling in for an absent state”. Yet CasaPound's media presence is entirely out of proportion with its electoral support. The group counts just 5,000 members, recently abandoned all efforts to stand in elections, and declared itself “a movement, not a party” – realising that its best prospects lie in working as a satellite of the right-wing Lega Nord party.

Contrary to media reports of a neo-fascist revival, fascism in Italy never really went away. In 1945, the Italian Social Movement (MSI) was founded by veterans of Mussolini’s regime. After the end of the Cold War, MSI leaders sought a break with their fascist image. In 1994–5 MSI leaders Gianni Alemanno and Gianfranco Fini rebranded the party as Alleanza Nazionale – a “national-conservative” force in Silvio Berlusconi’s coalition. Fascism had undergone a makeover: it had reformed its image, and managed to fold itself into the mainstream.

Are you actually fucking kidding me?

Galveston police are apologizing after a dramatic photo circulated online showing horse-mounted officers leading a handcuffed man of color by what appears to be a rope.

Police issued a press release about the photo on Monday, confirming that horse-mounted officers had "clipped" a "line" to a man's handcuffs after he was arrested Saturday on a criminal trespassing charge.

Galveston Police Chief Vernon Hale also issued a statement Monday in the press release. He apologized to the man, Donald Neely, 43, who had been arrested on a misdemeanor criminal trespassing charge.

"First and foremost I must apologize to Mister Neely for this unnecessary embarrassment," he said in the statement. "Although this is a trained technique and best practice in some scenarios, I believe our officers showed poor judgement in this instance and could have waited for a transport unit at the location of the arrest."

His statement went on to say that the officers, identified only as P. Brosch and A. Smith, did not have malicious intentions during the arrest. Hale said the department has changed the policy to prevent this technique from being used again.

Tired of hiding: five doctors who provide abortions come out

“I thought, ‘This is ridiculous.’ I’m playing into this game by being quiet and secretive. It makes me feel like I’m ashamed of this work, which I’m not – I’m actually so deeply proud of it.”

McHugh is one of five formerly closeted abortion providers who spoke to the Guardian about their recent decisions to come out about their work. Fed up with mounting threats to reproductive rights – including a pending abortion ban in Alabama that would punish providers with up to 99 years in prison, a push to close the last clinic in Missouri, and a president who tweets about doctors “executing babies” – these providers are finally breaking their silence about the cause to which they have devoted their lives.

The fact that one reads this and thinks they are so very brave in and of itself tells the story of female reproductive rights in America

What America would look like if it didn't change their Amendments

As America attempts to recover from two deadly mass shootings in the space of 48 hours, there are calls to change the Second Amendment – which allows for the owning of weapons.
Like many other US amendments, this one too can be changed – if there is the political will. Crucially, it is for this exact reason that they're called 'amendments.'
America has a rich history in amending existing laws to improve the lives of its citizens. Here are some of the ways America would be worse off had it not amended pre-existing laws:
1. Slavery would still be legal
America’s 13th Amendment (1865) abolished slavery and involuntary solitude in all circumstances apart from in the case of a punishment for a crime.
2. You could be searched at any time for any reason
The 4th Amendment (1791) titled “Search and Seizure” gave people the right to secure their homes and person, and put a requirement for Warrants.
3. Soldiers could be posted in your home without your consent
Until the third amendment (1971), soldiers could, at any time use a citizen’s home to post up.
4. Women couldn't vote
Prior to 1920 women were not legally allowed to vote. It wasn’t until the ratification of the 19th Amendment that it was prohibited to deny the right to vote based on sex.
5. Black and Hispanic people couldn't vote, either
The 15th Amendment prohibited denying someone’s right to vote based on race.
6. Punishments for crimes could be cruel and arbitrarily large fines set
The eighth amendment - Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.
7. You were not entitled to a trial-by-jury
The 6th Amendment (1971) protects the right to a fair trial by jury.
8. You wouldn’t be able vote unless you are over the age of 21
The 26th Amendment (1971) enshrines the right of US citizens over the age of 18 to vote.

But... we all know that the amendment needed would make a certain type of chap feel insecure, and we can't have that....

Trump Bashes Obama Via Fox & Friends Quotes

White House televisions were clearly tuned into Fox News on Tuesday morning, as Trump retweeted comments made by Fox News hosts Brian Kilmeade and Ainsley Earhardt that defended the sitting president amidst political rancor that has come from the weekend mass shootings that have, thus far, left 31 individuals dead.

After posting the below messages, Trump retweeted a June 6th post by Mitch McConnell which observes the 75th anniversary of D-Day. Because reasons.

Chris Hayes Blasts 'Well of Evil' That Fuels Trump's 'Dark Sorcery of Racial Hatred'

“Even if there were no blood, it would still be vile,” Hayes said. “If there were no body count, no deaths to mourn, no grieving families, no young parents ripped apart by bullets while shielding their babies, even if none of that happened, it would still be an existential threat to the America we can and should be.”
--
“Even if not one drop of blood were ever shed in pursuit of it, it would still be anathema. It will still be a force to be conquered and banished,” Hayes continued. “What is the ‘it’ I’m speaking of? Well, to quote a phrase, ‘You know it and I know it.’ It’s the well of evil from which our president draws and has drawn from the first day when he said Mexico was sending rapists to the U.S., presumably with the explicit intent to defile America’s women, the dark sorcery of racial hatred that conjures invasions and infestations out of desperate fellow human beings seeking refuge. An exultant hatred, a hatred wrapped in a joking, not-joking smile and a cowardly irony, in a pause at the podium that let the crowd hurl its bile. Hatred echoed in the refrain of death squads and war criminals and fascist mobs throughout history as they wield the club and the pistol and the machete: ‘You’re invaders. You are animals. You are a disease. You are a threat to us and you will not replace us.'”
--
“Donald Trump knows what he’s doing,” Hayes said. “Everyone hears the president loud and clearly when he speaks. He tells his followers they alone are the heroes of the this country’s history. They’re threatened by their fellow countrymen and women who live in cities, by the desperate mothers and babies in flip-flops that he separates in pens, by those who call their God by a different name. Time and again, time and again, this nation must answer the question: ‘Who is it for? Who America is for?’ And the simple answer time and again must be it is for all of us. We welcome the stranger. We pursue justice. We act as equals in the collective enterprise of democracy. The president and his party stand on the wrong side of that question right now. They have long since disqualified themselves from the support of decent people by doing so.”
